My dad married a horribly abusive woman and my sister and I begged him to leave, and he had sole custody of us. He was miserable too. He read The Four Agreements and said the book changed his outlook on our situation by convincing him that we are the ones deciding to be affected by her abuse. That her demeaning words and psychologically damaging actions "have no power," even though I was 16 at the time. Whenever I was understandably upset by her actions, he would just bring up that damn book. WTF?! He eventually left a few years later once that bogus thinking wore off and he couldn't take it anymore. I always saw that book as a joke. It mocks legitimate reactions to unhealthy circumstances.

I am living my best now 😊 I earned a masters degree and became a college counselor in Hawaii and only need to work 9 months out of the year. It feels good knowing how upset my dads ex would be at my happiness and success.

But I will say that I'm definitely older than Jack and I find that we have wildly different perspectives on books. I thought things were nonsense when I was 20 that I now see the value in. Reading this book at almost 40, I now know the importance of its lessons.

“Feeling in your bones” means high range of developed intuition to make this clear. It’s psychic thing. Writing essay and looking for knowledge in book need evidence cause you take knowledge from book, not from your own experience of psychic development of knowledge. I agree that sometimes these books serve as a reminder of old wisdom but the way they justify the content is really bad. I mean, when the author resorts to mumbo jumbo and magic thinking to validate their wisdom then I would say not even the author believes in what they preach. Thanks so much for talking about the four agreements. So many people on instagram were recommending it and saying “it changed their lives”. so I read it and thought it was super basic common self help knowledge or something super crazy like thinking about cancer and than getting it. You are honestly the first person I’ve heard speaking the truth and not praising this book for being genius.

I feel like alot of these celebrities support and promote these books because alot of these 'self-help' books promote the idea that we can change our lives if we simply decided too. Then celebrities can defend themselves against people calling them out for money hording and unethical practices because according to these 'experts' if the people they treat unethically just decided to get better jobs and "work harder" then they wouldn't be in the position they're in.

@@jonah2159 some time ago I was afraid I might have OCD because my intrusive thoughts are really bad and honestly they interfere with my life so much, there was a point I was so afraid of one specific thing happening and that caused me so much anxiety to the point I couldn’t eat and I would lay in bed crying about it all day (the thing in question involved health, when there were no sign whatsoever that there was anything wrong with my health).. But I don’t think i do any compulsory behavior, i don’t feel the need to clean or organize anything, and when I did research about it this was like the main symptom of ocd so now I just think my problem is just anxiety really. But should I maybe talk about it with my psychologist?

Lol the four agreements is always so highly recommended! I actually recently picked it up at a thrift store and want to read it soon. I bet it’s the “wisdom book” for people who have never read a book

As a hypnotherapist I find Weir's book problematic as I was trained to do forms of past-life regression with clients.. WITH THE COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING of both parties that what the client sees and experiences ISN'T a past life, but the brains ability to code information and experiences as METAPHORS. Exactly like a dream. You can use this technique to help resolve difficult memories and experiences, and a few clinical studies suggest that this is useful. BUT it isn't, you know, real. It's the subconscious mind and it's beautiful ability to code data. Weir's assertion that it was, in fact, real in my opinion robs the client of whatever clinical therapeutic value such a technique might have.

The four agreements is a book of Toltec philosophies. I have read this book in its original Spanish language, and the translation does not do justice. I suggest people wanting to read this book, and the creator of this youtube video, too, look further into the historical implications of the philosophies these native Mexican people were trying to embody :). I also agree there are a lot of faults in this book, but this is a native people's philosophy that should be looked at through the objective lens of history as well.

I knew someone who knew Dr. Weiss personally since they used to work together at UM. Most of the Psychiatric department considered him a bit off and he was apparently deeply affected by the death of his child. He was more interested in his superstar status after Many Lives, Many Masters than actually helping people.

I think Four Agreements is an incredible book. It’s based on ancient Toltec wisdom and is very eastern is its style-which we westerners are not very well equipped to understand, as we aren’t taught about the concept of the ego or how to detach from ours. (The lenses we’ve been conditioned to look through, stories we’ve been conditioned to believe about reality etc.) It’s definitely changed my life and helped me become a happier, healthier, more compassionate person!

I read one of those when I was about 10 years old and was fascinated by reincarnation, then started reading about metaphysics, after that new age and self help books. I've also read the 4 agreements a few times. All I can say is that at the very least these books got me interested in reading.

My narcissistic estranged father LOVED the 4 agreements because they were rules that Other People should follow. Also I kinda feel like “Do Your Best” kinda negates the other agreements because you could be like “well I was impeccable with my word 1/10 times but at least I tried!”

I thought the same as you when I read the four agreements for the first time! Really triggered me the way it was written. Tho I must say as I actually started living by them, they are live changing! Simple but good. And you realize that life CAN be really simple once you start following them

I saw "the four agreements" in a book fair yesterday and got curious about it (honestly, at first glance i thought it was something related to weed) but I had the same weird feeling when I saw that the four pilars of the book were stated in the cover. I do like the idea of "being impeccable with your words" when it comes to understading their power to hurt or open possibilities and also the importance of communicating truth and authenticity (I used to lie a lot as a child and I'm really good at it, but it has brought me unhappiness and this unsettling feeling similar to an "impostor syndrome"). Anyway, all this to say that I think those are good principles but I'm glad I didnt buy the book, thanks for the content!

I work at a bookstore and the Four Agreements is probably one of the most popular self transformation titles we sell and it hurts my soul every time I see someone buying it. On a brighter note, I highly recommend Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr. It's a National Book Award finalist in the US and is honestly one of the best books I've read, hands down.

Some recommended The Four Aagreements to me. The idea of it coming from Tolmec ideals was interesting but just the first couple pages was SO off-putting. It was just like The Secret. Yuck!

@Trinity M but its not about a culture is it? The book is called the four agreements, its about that, and if the way it expands about them its bad or personally bad for jack and op then there is that, but it isnt about them talking about a culture, in no way

I worked at a book store for 5 years, The Four Agreements is a widely well known self-help book. And this video goes to show just because a book is popular, it doesn't mean it's necessarily a good book.

@@jgator6694 this guy has a degree in literature though.. he literally studied criticism and as a critic he does his job (expressing his opinion about how the book is written) very well. and he talks about the execution of those ideas while saying that those ideas are not bad (2:35). so even if the book was helpful to some, to him with his giant reading experience it wasn't written well. not saying you don't have the right to have your opinion though, books are supposed to be discussed from different perspectives.

@@minimoniya that may be true that he has a degree in literature; however I would argue that doesn’t make his opinion more valid than mine. When his argument about The Four Agreements include such things as “ a toddler is not a perfect person because he sh!ts himself”…he is clearly missing the point the author was making about why a toddler is “perfect ( uncorrupted; untarnished by the world). And his statement that if you read this book you are a “dickhead”….well let’s just say he lost me there. While I agree with you, minimoniya, that opinions on books are open to interpretation, I think I could find another book critique who can articulate his opinion in a more intelligent and classy way. I think this particular book critique should probably learn to incorporate some (if not all) of the four agreements into his daily life. My opinion for what it is worth..

The BEST reviews ever. I have only read the first of these but your critique is spot on. Hysterical.

I love reading novels especially the novels that compose of 1000 - 5000 chapters/page. It's like a journey with complete world building that you will need just a little bit of effort to imagine the settings of the books.

the 4 agreements may not be the most well written thing but the 4 agreements themselves are something we can all do better to follow I think!

Ariel Rodriguez The book is based on ancient Toltec spirituality and their principles. It's not all commons knowledge when it's not practiced commonly, and these spiritual systems were built to remind us to stay in alignment with common truths. To call it "drivel" feels disingenuous.

@@arielrodriguez968 the ones that get it, get it, and the ones that don’t, don’t. personally it changed my life, sorry but not everyone understands everything at first glance, I am a very oblivious person and don’t pick up on stuff like the four agreements or common knowledge because of my learning disability. it really helped me, and it’s not only common knowledge, it’s about the Toltec experience and that culture.

If you read this book with bad intentions going in you aren’t going to be receiving its message. He was taking it too literally and nitpicking.

Yeah this book helped me get out of bed. I had rejected the book multiple times before I finally opened my heart and mind to it. This book needs a certain understanding of lifting all your assumptions on stuff before reading it. Don’t let the black magic and the sometimes clunky examples ruin the whole book. There are some real nuggets of knowledge in there that are so valid.

I’ve actually had a doctor say to me ‘you look fine’ when I had a Crohn’s flare and was loosing weight. Yeah. I was fine. A lot of the spiritual books are ableism.

I was literally opening up a comment to explain why she’s not actually a self-made millionaire/billionaire and you beat me to the punch! 🤣 Also, the first book is a foundational text in the New Age movement…it outlines the idea of manifestation, or the idea that your words have cosmic weight…it is very silly on the surface but also very harmful…ppl have believed they can do things like will away cancer instead of getting medical treatment…I’m glad you tore it apart! Well done 😉

This is the dangerous side of manifestation for sure. However, manifestation is also used as a trigger for self-motivation causing a person to prepare as though they have what they want to the point where they have actually achieved it. Yes, this can be called self-belief and motivation however those who follow magick often refer to it as manifestation. Just like religions can say achievements are a grace from their god/gods.

@@emizard9249 I absolutely agree…religious people from all backgrounds will also deny necessary medical treatment and rely on prayer instead…but I would argue that both of those ppl are coming from the same place…I pray to God all the time and occasionally ask him for things, but he can always say no and he frequently does 😂 I respect practitioners of New Age religions and Neopagan religions in general 🙏🏼 I guess my objections come when ppl are being materially harmed in some way (and that applies to everyone, regardless if I share a religion with them or not 👍🏼) thank you for your thoughts Emily and have a great day! ❤️

The four agreements actually changed my life. It gave me new perspectives and opened my eyes to things that are not necessarily evident to everyone. The book is certainly deeply spiritual and a little esoteric, then it’s a matter of whether you believe in it or not. I personally agree with what he says. I think you shouldn’t underestimate the power of what the brain and body is capable of!

Not going to lie, as someone who has struggled with Borderline Personality Disorder traits, the Four Agreements changed my life, and I credit my recovery in part to its advice. Each to their own tho

@@sylvia1797 oh really. Interesting, I feel like what he describes from the book seems really weird and oversimplified but also kinda misguided to the conclusion of the topic's end point. A tad off from what I'm familiar to about DBT at least. 😅 A book I was recommended was The High-Conflict Couple by Allan E. Fruzzetti.

The book is literally based on ancient Toltec spirituality. And spirituality is meant to be simple. Having a good life is simple. That’s why the content on the book is kinda “obvious”. I am okay with people not liking it, but I am sad Jack basically said it was trash. Is not.
