    Honestly, I'm almost 29 years old, and I'm a teacher at high school. I'm always feeling a little bit embarrassed for enjoying things out of "teenage culture", like Olivia Rodrigo, Harry Styles, or teenage books/films, etc. These things tend to be mocked by my peers. However, when I realize that a well-read, intelligent young man like Jack enjoys those things too and that he doesn't feel like these are trivial forms of art, I just feel much better and so much more understood. People tend to think that everything that comes from the younger generation is more superficial or just not as "high-class". I believe my students appreciate that I see artistic value in those things, and I can connect to them so much more by caring for their interests.

    Honestly, I've felt the same way. Though I'm not in my 20s yet, I AM about to go start college in a few months. Literally all my peers have "mature" tastes now, and they don't follow teen-culture like we all did just a couple years ago. Sometimes I get pretty insecure about the fact that I still hadn't grown out of liking stereotypical teen stuff (like Cartoons and Kpop), not to mention that I'm a guy too so most people tend to be more judgemental towards me for liking childish things :/ I'm literally the only senior in my school who's a fan of Olivia Rodrigo, and when I found out about it I just felt so old like damn most of them didn't even know who she was💀 But lately I'm trying to look at it in a more mature/logical perspective. If I still won't grow out of liking teen stuff like the rest of my peers, then so what? I enjoy what I enjoy, and there's nothing I need to be ashamed of. And you shouldn't be ashamed either. It's not trivial, and if it makes us happy then why should we be concerned about what our peers like anyways, right? Art, no matter what form, is for *all* ages (unless it's explicit/inappropriate but you get what I mean)

  • @mammamonssterr

    @mammamonssterr

    You are in your twenties, you are SO young, enjoy what you like, enjoy your life!!!! I would say that you can like whatever it is that you like at any age, but in your case it's also completely understandable, I honestly think that the "mainstream" nowadays is targeted not only to teenagers but also to young adults in their 20s, and it's all over social media, it's inevitable to see the content of these type of artists and eventually look them up and enjoy them. It's so normal. You do you!

    hi, as an autistic person, i just wanted to comment on 'the curious incident of the dog in the night time'- you do mention that the experience in that book is not true of every autistic person, however, i'd say that the group of people it would apply to would be very, very limited. the author himself basically admitted to having done no reserach in a blog post of his (which i can link, if you'd like to read.), to which i would add that the author didn't write the main character with any specific neurodivergency in mind. doesn't even like the main character being referred to as autistic. and so i wouldn't call the book good representation in the slightest. it's not about autism. as for my personal opinion, i didn't like it at all either, it was almost insulting at times. im glad you could find something in the book you enjoyed, though! id just recommend not thinking it's anything near good autistic representation

    Not gonna lie, as an autistic person, hearing so much praise for the "the curious incident..." book hurt. Since it's written by a neurotypical person with no prior research or relation to autism, I'd argue that it doesn't represent any of us. I read the book and struggled with it because it oddly seemed stereotypical. But I pushed through. I had 5 pages to go and finally decided to research the author and realized it's written from an NT's perspective and I couldn't finish it. The whole point of it is to show what it's like to live with autism so how can it be written by someone who's not autistic?? Since it's written by an NT, it shouldn't be associated with autism or neurodivergence. This video is spreading that misconception. Please mention this on your channel in a future video, Jack

    The thing with Curious Incident is that it only represents one experience of autism, which also happens to be one of the only experiences of autism that is present across all media. I read the book a few years ago and really enjoyed it as I related to aspects of Christopher's character, but in retrospect it doesn't really encompass the majority of autistic people's experience. This is no hate to anyone who enjoyed the book as it can be very difficult to find fiction books about autism. M is For Autism is a great example tho!

    the curious incident only represents a tiny minority of autistic people. Christopher is a very stereotypical depiction of a white autistic boy which is vastly different to the experience of BIPOC autistic people, and autistic people who aren’t assigned male at birth. it’s a great introduction to the experience of autistic people, but i would encourage anyone who has read the curious incident to expand their horizons a little and learn about a wider range of autistic experiences. (this is coming from a trans POC autistic)

  • @noodleydoo2862

    @noodleydoo2862

    Жыл бұрын

    I actually did relate a tiny bit to Christopher despite being poc and afab, (and also having adhd, not autism) -it’s just that they made everyone around him so callous and unlikeable, and acted like it was somehow his fault. like they pushed him to the extreme of running away cause they didn’t listen to him, or try to understand his perspective or offer him even the amount of respect infants get, and then the author acts like it’s because he doesn’t understand people or whatever. Like no, these people are being irresponsible parental figures.

    It's actually not enjoyed by many members of the disabled community and is an inaccurate representation of autism that feels extremely dehumanizing and infantalizing to many of us disabled people. If the book wasn't written by an abled person and was an autistic person's experience, all of our criticisms would go away. But this simply isn't what happened. The literature might be good but it still perpuates harmful ideals.
