The ikea near me has a example room that’s witch themed, the 2 display books are a potions guide and a history of goblins. They were the same book in different sizes, But they did have medieval drawings of goblins in them. Wish I knew Swedish

In defence of the watercoloring book; sketching and watercoloring are two different art skills that need to be taught separately. So even though it says "for beginners," you aren't actually the target audience.

if I remember correctly Christmas around that time wasn't exactly a *celebration* it was more a quiet day (time?) of reflection and prayers, etc. It wasn't really a food holiday either (I think... don't quote me on this). But, it changed around Dicken's A Christmas Carol

To be honest, this just looks like a really specific way to resell old books. A lot of people are saying "wow, I'm surprised they are real books" but as someone who used to work for someone who sold used books online, used books are not difficult to come by and it would in fact be much more effort to create fake books than it would be to just find a bunch of old books all in similar color/sizes. I honestly like the idea.

Same. Judging by what libraries have been tossing out over the past few decades, we are going to want some of these back someday. Maybe this will help.

The thing about the watercolor book is that it's not a sketching/human figure book! It's only supposed to teach you watercolor painting techniques. Painting traditionally comes after sketching, so that's why it assumes that you can already sketch when you pick up the book

Also. Just because it tells you to sketch a human doesn’t mean you have to be good at it. You could draw what might be in your opinion a shitty human because you are not skilled and still then practice the techniques. Like just have something down to practice with is basically the idea. The watercolor techniques will still apply. And if you your really “bad” just am more for getting the idea of a human body without it really being human. Gives you an abstract look. Which I mean just go circle or even just a random shape for a head. Makes something to represent lips and eyes. Draw something of a body. You know. Just get the parts in. Then play with watercolor paint. And maybe in the end it will be sorta a cool abstract artwork. 🤣

"it really said step 1: be good at art" as an artist who dabbled in watercolors I just feel the need to clarify - you will want to be good at art before you attempt watercolors. ohhh boy would you. they are so much to handle, from color theory to understanding the characteristics and physical properties of water pigments and how they interact, to just being able to draw up a sketch easy enough that you can just get to the coloring part... definitely start with a pencil 😂💀

In my country, watercolour painting is a part of the school art curriculum (because cheap watercolours are relatively light, cheap and easy to store and carry, and also water-solluble). Many kids hate it, because you have to actually become good at sketching to start making something more productive than stains and blobs with watercolours. Being good at sketching comes to many of us either after an art school or after a technical sketching course, which comes extracurricular along with the 3D geometry, later in the school program then art classes. the only useful thing for watercolours if you can't sketch well, is only a game of making random blobs and then drawing horns and tails to them to create monsters. Or just draw random spots, call it modernism. Gouache is way more beginner-friendly, despite being a mess.

@@annasolovyeva1013 there's actually an old project we did in like 2nd grade or s/t (that I know is still done bc I now work for the school I went to) where we did a very basic autumn forest landscape-greens for grasses, brown trunks, and red/orange/yellow for leaves, and then just traced the slightly blobby shapes in sharpie. Lots of fun and still looks pretty good edit: I just remembered too in 5th grade the exercise is somewhat turned on it's head, where we draw cats w cool designs/markings in crayon and then color in the rest with watercolors to learn about how the crayon wax repels the water and how that can be used in art

As a kid I used to watercolor in coloring books. We had those cheap watercolor pallets and as long as you didn't use too much water, (which I did plenty of times) it was just like thin paint.

@@ania3187 Because not all artists are good at watercolors. It’s an entirely different medium with its own set of unique properties and rules. It’s like having a book titled “2D Animation for Beginners” but you obviously need to know how to draw in order to make any frame of hand-drawn animation.

Yeah, it makes no promises about teaching you how to draw. Why waste space for that, when they could probably sell you a different book altogether.

I think the watercolor book was targeted at people who can draw but haven't done water color painting before. It wasn't saying it will teach you how to do art in general, just watercolor. There's a huge difference in how you approach art depending on the medium (pen and paper, paint on canvas, even different types of paint on canvas, etc) so having a guide on watercolor specifically could be useful for an artist who maybe works primarily with acrylic paint but wants to try something new.

A lot of times "aesthetic books" or "books by the foot" are sourced by collecting books that would have otherwise ended up in a land fill.

I used to work in a store that sold used books by the yard to decorators that were staging homes for sale. It was the only reason we accepted those highly decorative "The Great Classics" that people used buy through the mail.

Well not really, you dont want to waste you time on topics which dont really interest you or are less intriging. Look you can probably do this, but you will realise that you are wasting your time on things that seems rather random. Instead you could read a famous novel, or a other book you always wanted to. There are tons of great books and more bad ones. Reading a book is not like watching a movie for 2 hours and it is done at least for me. So do u really want to spend your time on a random book you probably dont really like or lets say rather not like as much as other books.

Fun fact. growing pains of adrian mole series were quite a hit in korea over decades ago when they were first published. I remember as a bookish teenager, I emensely enjoyed the dry humor, identified with pathos and everyday gripings of a fictional boy from a very faraway land, and often laughed out loud. so imagine my suprise, to find out my old time friend on the list of non other than aesthetic books! really pleasant surprise indeed. thanks Jack! I always write inscriptions in books I give as gifts for this reason, I have a book someone inscribed in the early 1900’s from a second hand shop

The watercolour book was for people that were new to watercolour, not new to art, that's why it assumed that the reader already knew how to sketch.

Reminds me that I once flipped through the decorative books in Ikea... they were just filled with random Swedish Ikea rules and instructions

Just want to point out that the watercolor book is not meant to teach people how to draw but how to use watercolor. It’s probably part of a series which each teaches a part of art

My grandmother used to make decorative books. As a kid me, and my sister would look through them. One was straight up an adult book, many were biology because those often had the right backs & could get many for cheapish

satay is south east asian street food, originally from indonesia but can also be found commonly in malaysia and singapore. the almonds are meant to be chunky and mixed with the peanut butter for a sauce you dip the chicken into (at least thats how i've been eating it my whole life). also the chicken is meant to be skewered on wooden sticks and grilled but eating with a fork works as well LOL i read that adrian mole book while i was in my early teens, good stuff ;)

Tip: if you want pretty decorative books for cheap try your local antique shops!! Sometimes you’ll find really interesting reads (or decoration lol) for $2-$6. I recently scored a book from 1929 on English literature throughout history in near perfect condition for only $5 and it’s so pretty

It's also surprisingly easy to give old books a new cover, and most of the materials are readily available or that you might even already have (PVA glue, decorative paper or card for endpapers, and board harvested from used notepads/sketchpads or, for hardcovers, reused from the original cover providing it's in good enough shape). With a bit of practise, you can turn damaged old books into beautiful, classic, and functional volumes.

My work has a lot of "aesthetic" books to demo bookshelves, mostly browns and neutral colors, but they are all real and I definitely wanna read them sometime lol.

I get the misunderstanding but that watercoloring book was for people new to watercoloring not beginners. You don’t typically BEGIN with watercoloring to make watercolor art, you start with your line drawing. Unlike painting with oil or acrylic, watercoloring is at it’s root a COLORING technique. You need something to color and so it is almost always the second step of the art piece. The book wasn’t saying that to watercolor you must be talented, it was assuming you were already studying art and you’re now ready to begin coloring your drawings with a method you need information on. TLDR: No one is born with those natural art skills, you just started on book two on accident. Learn how to draw before you learn how to color that drawing. Buy the basket before buying the eggs, my dude.

Oh, how I'd love to scream "Vindication!" ala Holt in front of my 3rd grade art teacher. I remember her getting upset borderline angry at our class for using line art or sketching out our pieces in a watercolor activity when it was actually acceptable.

@@Stettafire I guarantee they won’t be offended. I’m speaking as an illustrator so please believe me when I say that was not meant to teach watercoloring as a functioning skill. It’s just easier to have watercolor paint in public school because they can be used again when left out to dry, they’re relatively quick drying on the page, and they are water soluble so easiest to clean. You don’t need a book to teach you water+paint+page= cool color shapes that you can see kind of looks like a cat. But what if you don’t want to pain a cat?The book is sharing how to paint ANYTHING you want to paint, and that takes practice, patience, and planning.

That watercolor book is intended for artists who already have experience in drawing. Each different medium (graphite, charcoal, ink, acrylic, oil, watercolor, etc) has its own learning curve. An experienced artist could be great at sketching and acrylic painting but have no idea how to do watercolor. They’re assuming you’re an artist who just doesn’t have watercolor experience, but has already gone through the basics of sketching.

I ran into these “aesthetic books” at a restaurant one time and one of them was an original printing of Lust for Life. Lust for Life is the most beautiful book I’ve ever read and I almost screamed when I realized that it was just for decoration and nobody will ever read that copy again.

At first when reading the title of the video, I thought that someone was making blank books simply to fill bookshelves and I thought 'well, it's good practice for the book binder but they could just as easily sell them as journals to be used rather than filling space that could be taken up by books from 2nd hand shops that would otherwise be shredded.' then lo and behold, that's precisely what these are! I am all for using something second hand even if it's not it's original function rather than creating waste making something new.

*I ONCE BOUGHT A BOOK* for the astonishingly beautiful cover - then years later I realised it was called "The N***r of the Narcissus" I read it - literally, nothing happened - its about a sick guy on a boat. People like it "This is one of Conrad's finest works, and its tight, succinct, and scathing effectiveness as a morality tale might even set it higher than "Heart of Darkness"."

I’m impressed with your ability to read multiple books in one day. You should brag about this on dates and job applications, lol. I’m sending this video to my fellow book nerd friends

Saint Nicholas is actually the biggest celebration of the year in the Netherlands, except here it’s not associated with Christmas, but with Saint Nicholas (who’s been ‘alive’ for almost 2000 years by now). It’s also celebrated on the 5th because it’s ‘pakjesavond’ (present’s eve), just like some people give their gifts on Christmas Eve.

This is my first time watching anything from this channel and I have to say I love his energy and how joyful and nice he seems

Ok, I am a minute in to this video, but figured I would tell you my little trick now. Go to an antique book shop, or even a thrift store or something. Go to the book part of the shop, and pick yourself whatever you find pleasing to look at, sometimes you can score some pretty early 20th century books for a pound or up to a tener. And then you can actually get good literature, Hemingway, Jack London, Verne, Fitzgerald, Bronte, etc. And these books are a beautiful window into the past. But also, I get that this is just a stunt for a video, and I am perfectly ok with that. Now, I shall continue watching this video. Which I frankly don't know what to expect from. Edit, Ok, clearly you know your way with books. Good on you, mate!

Your channel gives me very strong feelings of nostalgia of like early 2000s youtube, of stuff made for fun and just the sake of it. Really love how you present yourself and how bright your personality and uniqueness shines!

@@7oyoko well that depends - you can start with the first one because it's the first in the series, OR you can pick one in which Adrian Mole's age matches yours most closely (in his first diary he's 13, in the last one he's 39), since they're more relatable when you're going through the same thing

It's a book about how to get good at watercolors specifically though, not a book about how to get good at art in general. You can't actually be good at watercolors without having the basics of art down first.

found your channel earlier today and I’ve been watching all of your videos! you’re a hilarious guy and you have great taste in books. with that being said, who actually buys books for the sole purpose of an aesthetic? good on you for reading them.

I just discovered your channel, and I love your enthusiastic approach to discovering books of all kinds. I am one of those nosy people who picks up the "aesthetic" books in hotels and wonders how they get there! So sorry to hear you didn't get to graduate in Durham Cathedral. We went there in the summer and it was honestly, so beautiful! Also, I got to stay in the university, and we got rooms at the top of the keep. So many stairs! We ate breakfast in the great hall in the morning. If that was your experience while you were there, you're so lucky! Big fan of Adrian Mole... But also very old cookbooks. The best ones are Good Housekeeping.

This is the equivalent of translating and reading all of the Swedish IKEA decorative books that they put in the staged bedrooms

I'm Swedish and while I was living in paris I was craving Swedish books so I really used to go to ikea and steal some lol. Most of them sucked tho

Oh and it was a nearly 15 yrs ago so there wasn't quarantine like now, libraries were open. And there were no smartphones and I was poor student whose computer was broken, so I had time.

This feels a lot like the older books all over my grandparents house. For years, I never gave them a closer look- but taking that closer look, I realized they were all classical books like the Illiad, or a collection of civil war memoirs. It also reminds me of the shelf full of older leather bound engineering books I got at one point from my Dad. Will I ever read them? Probably not, but I still am glad to have them there and have the option to do so.

I feel like this was Jack's excuse to waste money on decorative books, "make it a video and it's worth it"

Ok so fun story! I used to work in a used bookshop and noticed one day on a night out this cocktail bar had a load of vintage style old books, the kind we have to pulp because no one buys them. I got chatting with the manager and he said they were always getting stolen by drunk people and were really hard to find to buy enough to keep the shelves full. Long story short I managed to set up a monthly crate contract with him for all our terrible books and cut our pulp bin costs down by a whole chunk. Was very favoured for that.

Cordy could be talking about _purely_ decorative books being on display, i.e. books with no contents that match a decorative theme, and still have 'real' books around that you've read. Besides, the point of 'doing that' shouldn't matter to you, because it wouldn't be your house those books would be on display in. I can't imagine you'd really believe you have the agency to tell others how to live their lives.
