Books are so bothersome to carry. I always put them on my backpack cause I don't like holding things. Also, books are def not an indicator of intelligence, they are more so just a fun hobby to pass time with. That article is massively stereotypical and just rude

i used to carry books to school just to have them at hand whenever i could read and god was it annoying they were also mostly 300 pages paper backs so i can’t imagine how annoying it would be to carry a 500 page hardcover like why would anyone go to the trouble of doing that other than to read it

Big YES to not judging people for carrying around the same book for a while!! I'm a law student and it takes me a month to read normal sized fiction. I've already got these huge thousand-page casebooks and additional readings prioritised for class, so leisure reading is relegated to my 20 minute commute only :(

for me it's the opposite 😂 I live in a non-english speaking country and chose to read english books as they were cheaper. here they increase the price for the labour it takes to translate it to my country's language.

In Germany, English books are usually cheaper. Because there's this fixed price for German books but it doesn't apply to books in foreign languages (unless they are published by a German publisher, I think). And then there's also the "fun" habit of splitting one book into two volumes when translating it for no other reason than being able to make more money this way.

But, I've seen the pictures of them holding books, not reading them. Unlike other celebs that had been caught reading without any posing. I think that's the critique. Or try to find an elder picture of them with a book, that's prior booktok era. The way the hold the books conveniently with their title visible at all times, lack of bookmarkers, etc, makes us suspicious. they might read some, who knows, but also you can´t deny that they are also using books as accesories.

@@lateralight depends tbh. It can mean that he's unable to express a simple opinion without rambling nonstop about it and using way too many words to explain something, like, "I like chocolate". In a way, it is beautiful to be able to constantly make everything sound deeper than it is, on some other occasions it's unnecessary. Some people prefer directness, some prefer longer descriptions

It's definitely a skill to be able to convey a concept, an idea, or make 3-dimensional characters and an intriguing story within a short time frame. That's why there are so many short stories that aren't any good lol Agatha Christie, Daphne du Maurier, Edgar Allen Poe, E. Nesbit, and Arthur Conan Doyle do short stories really well.

As a French student in literature, l'Etranger by Camus is a CLASSIC book. So many of my classmates adore it .

I loved this book so much. I think, it's a quite confusing because, when you finish it, you don't know if it was a good reading or the worst in you life. And that's why Albert Camus is a genius. His simple way to describe horrible events, that makes you more uncomfurtable, and his philosophy through his book withouth pointing the fact he is criticizing our society. He is one of the best writers of his century.

It's got so much. the protagonist is this enigmatic personality I can't get over .I sort of resonate to him I can't self amalyze myself and don't know why I do certain things I do. All of a sudden I'd just be lost in my train of thought when talking and boom I am then ignored for being rude and disrespectful. I can't exactly tell if I have a reason for my actions and if so why should I have one. Why just lots of whys but unaware of the question . I neither know the question nor the answer .

personally, i would suggest to anyone who wants to better understand camus’ “the stranger” that they also do a bit of reading on both his philosophical views and those of other prominent philosophers at the time, like jean-paul sartre's. it's also helpful if you get some insight into the broader historical and social backdrop of paris at the time. i feel like his works (and of many other authors) from that time are slightly more dependent on the context they were made in hence it's often necessary to understand that in order to fully grasp them.

Highly agree. I read both The Stranger and The Plague and only go the top most layers of them, so now I'm diving into biographies of him and his contemporary philosophers before I head back into reading his work

I am reading the stranger! As an Algerian, "a real one, an Arab" I am enjoying the book but I do find his view of us offensive, at the end of the day he is a part of a brutal colonialism that killed our grandparents and family and is the reason we still are a third world country. You could see in some articles that the relationship between his neighbour and his dog is a metaphor of the Algerian and French relations, implying how inferior Algerians are, how they are killed and tortured yet the French still "allow" their existence.

I honestly can’t believe the article isn’t just heavily sarcastic satire. All of the more offensive quotes are citations from the linked Vogue article “Would You Join the Bella and Gigi Hadid Book Club?“ which does seem more sincere in how it describes books as accessories in fashion and genuinely talks about the Hadid’s reading almost like a fad that just came back into fashion. New York Post is kind of a conservative gossip rag but it honestly seems like this journalist just thought the vogue article was ridiculous and wrote up theirs in a ridiculous way. You should try reading Stephen King's memoir On Writing. There's a lot to take away and is a really nice memoir about himself, his past drug use, and his accident. It's very inspirational for anyone and especially aspiring writers. But, it's also got one of the softest book covers I've ever touched. Fun fact: His inspiration to write Misery was his fans reaction to the first piece he published that wasn't within the horror realm and as a metaphor of his struggle with drug addiction.

I absolutely love the stranger myself, it's one of my first books that really got me out of a slump but also give me a view into more mature books.

The opening line from The Stranger reminds me of the opening of The Death of Bees by Lisa O'Donnell. "Today is Christmas Eve. Today is my birthday. Today I am fifteen. Today I buried my parents in the backyard. Neither of them were beloved." Probably where the similarities end, but still, good openings.

Camus’ A Happy Death is one of my favourite books, it’s like an early precursor to the Stranger that he wrote in the ‘30s (it wasn’t published until the ‘70s though). It uses that same tool of murder as a tool to examine the absurd, but instead the protagonist murders an acquaintance. It’s such an interesting concept

I think The outsider/stranger by Albert Camus is a must read. For me that book would be in my list of "books that have impacted my life". The idea of how we judge people based on social norms (like grieving the death of your mother, something that you would expect would make anyone sad) more that facts or evidence, is brilliant imo

I first read The Stranger in French, and I vividly remember getting to the part where murder's the guy on the beach and thinking "uhh, did I read that right???" before google translating it just to be sure, because it was so abrupt lol
