Well said! And you couldn't be more right. We had a place in our family right up where Shawn is. I grew up there and it was completely off-grid back when I was a kid. My parents decided when I was about 12 to move into the city so my dad's brother moved up there to live. He took the place and changed it into a full scale fishing marina. He rebuilt the house to a full on grid large home and because we were on a private lake he was busier than you can imagine with the marina. Anyway he worked like a dog and did it because he LOVED it. I spent almost every summer there after moving away and every year my Uncle grew a bit more slower and had a bit more creeks and groans. The irony was about 10 years ago he couldn't do it anymore because he had wore his body out. He was only 65 and lived a very healthy lifestyle but too much manual work did him in. He told me that all the time. It broke my heart to help him move. I knew he wouldn't do well away from it but it was no longer good for him to be alone up there. He died 18 months after he moved out. He was never the same after leaving what he loved. So Shawn absolutely should take a bit easier now that he has the almost everything completed by hand.

Cyndy I’m 64, and due to health conditions cannot take care of my little homestead in Alabama the way I’d like but I’ll stay here . I’ve got sons that help and this will be theirs one day. They’re city boys, but they’re learning. I’d love to be out like Shawn James in a small cabin away from the noise of the world,

I like what you wrote. I too believe that if you take a man off his land, he won't live long. That happened to my uncle Chuck. His wife wanted him to stop working so hard, they sold their land, and moved into a condo, in the city. He died 2 years later. I was young then but, I have watched it and heard about many times since then. :(

@@dannydenham8141 I'm sorry to hear you have health conditions Danny. I'm so glad you are fortunate to have the assistance. It is better if you can stay on the property that you love. My uncle wasn't fortunate in that he didn't have any children of his own. He was married but my Aunt couldn't have children. She passed away many years ago and he never remarried. The property much like Shawn's place and in the area, experiences harsh winters and that in turn needs wood and the roads to be cleared. His drive way was a 1/4 mile long and the road to the property before the driveway was not managed by the municipality, so it was up to him to plow it when he needed it. He started paying for those things when he couldn't but that tore away at him. I would go as often as I could and take my husband at the time, but I now live 3 hours away and could only manage 1 weekend a month in the good months and it was hit and miss in the winter because the winter storms were so untrusting with me having to be back for work. Anyway it wasn't safe for my uncle to be alone. His back and knees could barely hold him upright for him to heat up lunch. 😢

I’ve been following a couple of other homesteads that have become food, electric, and water self sustaining. Their first purchase was a tractor. Of course this means fuel, but so does a car or truck, a snow mobile, a chainsaw, a four wheeler, etc. Both made the purchase of the tractor as soon as they purchased the land for their homestead. Both say it made all the difference in what they were able to accomplish. Thanks for all your awesome videos!

One of the classic movie cliches that I have always believed to be true is " A man has got to know his limitations." There is no shame in asking for help when you need to accomplish a difficult goal in a specific period of time. You built an entire cabin with nothing but hand tools, that goal has been reached. Set up the homestead in anyway possible, using any and all resources available.

Look up “rocket mass heater” for the greenhouse and workshop. Planning it in is better than doing it after, and the heated mass is better for maintaining a consistent heat. The bonuses are not smoking out the area while using far less fuel since it is so much more efficient. As well as heating the space, the mass heat bench will be great for seed starting in the greenhouse. In the workshop, you can use it to thaw or dry out wood you’re working with, as well as a warm place to sit. If you do it, be sure to get an infrared viewing device, or the point and read style thermometer so you can find the temperature zones on the bench.

This reminds me of "Little House on the Prairie", and that time frame; 1870s to 1890s. People found land, cleared it, and built their homesteads. If you didn't prepare for the winter, you could starve. If you didn't plant it, fish it, or hunt it, you didn't eat. Seems they were nearly always working, preparing for the day, and the next day. Everyone had their chores, I'm sure. Thank you, Shawn, for taking us away from our current situations, and learning by watching you. Blessings to you and yours!

The only thing one needs to do is detach from social media. I only use KZread, and not for news of course. So for me the world is fine and I'm not stressed hehe. Sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, are largely a waste anyway and not beneficial.

a crusty krab I agree with you totally. I gave up all social media about a year ago and don’t miss any of the drama they create. I also don’t watch any news because there is nothing good about it. The media just stirs the pot and makes very angry humans. I’m happy living in my own little bubble. I use you tube as a learning tool only. 🙂 ☮️

@@ramit439 AMEN! HAHAHA. not even going to PRETEND on here. hahahha. I wouldn't miss all the pollution, lack of privacy, every time u look up, someone is right there in grillz, can't even enjoy ur own backyard patio by urself, someone making all that dam noise, it's never just quiet and serene, N.E.V.E.R, neighbors complaining, power washing driveway at 7am, gossip, people speeding, running lights, driving thru stop signs, solicitors at ur door tryin to sell u some shyt, dealing w/ the electric company, or phone company, gas company, waiting on hold for 45 min, for sometimes nothing, as they hang up on ur azz, gas prices always going up when your short, wear and tear on ur car, some can't even grow vegetables in their own front yards, yet must have grass, so u can contribute to all the water shortages and droughts, light company cutting off ur power, and never telling u when it's coming back on, while all ur food in freezer/fridge gets tossed out, as u wait for them, or they shut ur water off, all day, last min, so can't wash ur azz, brush teeth, flush, was u get jerked around for 8 plus hours waiting for them, traffic as u get cut da heck off by some idiots, or get slow azz people in THE FAST LANE, driving ms friggin daisy, 30 min to hour in car, some do more, wore the heck out by the time u get home, unless gotta stop by store and get milk or some shyt, dealing with rude azz people, bumpin ur dam cart, and being rude, waiting in crazy lines, etc. etc. shall I go on... just saying. I can only speak for myself, but I won't pretend that living in city is all gravy. hahahaha. just can't fake that. I wouldn't mind living on the outskirts, of a city, far out..... but if I had to compare, for me, I can't say it's all that great. I guess if I was rich, sure, I'd be living how the stars do, in the city, but neighborhood lots are sooooo huge, it's like having several acres of privacy, w/private gated road, and my assistants would deal w/ all the solictors, utility issues, etc. and lights go out, i'm rich, just book some suites at Beverly hills high end hotel or go to one of other homes and chill. lmao.. hahahahah

A green house that collect rain water would be helpful. I've seen it done on polytunnels with an extra layer of polythene ending in gutters half way down the sides. Wow you have been busy with the chain saw! Looks great.

You have to give yourself a break as far as asking for help. The natives and early settlers did it as a community, and so should you. I know you have to think of security issues, but you've got some good bush friends. Looking forward to the install of the new outbuildings. Stay well

This might SOUND awful, and NOT to disparage any Helpers, but I hope you blindfold the Helpers once you pick them until after you arrive at the cabin for security reasons. Just a reasonable step for your family's safety. Might have them sign a disclosure as well of not revealing your location as an added backup. Love your sharing everying & love, love, LOVE Cali!!

Awesome Shawn! This channel is so realistic and amazing as to what true homesteaders really go through. I grew up like this in KY during the 60's and 70's. We grew our own livestock and vegetables. We depended on it! Love seeing Self Reliance being a thing of the future now. I have since began my own processes of weeding out the dependence on day to day things like a grocery store and markets. Purchased tons of hand tools last and current last year and grown my first garden since a child. (Doing great by the way!) I look forward to the next vid.

I've spent over 25 yrs in the trades but sadly the body has given up so now I use my mind. I wish you the best of luck in your buildings. I would hope sometime before I'm gone to meet you and see your beautiful homestead. May God Bless you and your family!! Have a great week!!
