Big Changes This Year | Why I Took My Money Out of the Stock Market

Welcome back to the cabin - my first video of 2019, a year of big changes. I describe what I'm up to this year and hint at a major lifestyle change that we as a family just took steps to achieve this year. I talk about my experience in the stock market and why I'm out, instead investing in real estate before the market undergoes a major correction.
Thanks for watching!

Shawn I've read many of your viewer's comments, your viewers on both channels are interested in you and Cali. You may be the most liked person on KZread, if you're not it's because you're number 2 to Cali. We can go to many other channels to watch Canadians tinker around in the woods. We like to watch you tinker in the woods and Cali distract as you try to complete a project. It's always nice to hear your comments even when i disagree. Personally my favorite moments are when you laugh at yourself, Cali or anything. We all what to watch and hear you win!!!

What a nice comment MM. You sort of said everything I wanted to say. I too love both channels and of course I love Cali. I wish we were in a different time where Shawn's wife and daughters could be 100% safe and be willing to join in the videos. I envision it would be like "Little House on the Prairie" Canadian forest style. Having raised two (grown) daughters I know the laughter and wonderfulness daughters bring to your life.

There is so much going on with your channels that I don't know where to begin, I like the way you study and read about things that interest you and the way you build everything without power tools, you are obviously patient. I like how when you have a meal with your wife you set the camera a certain way so she can enjoy her privacy but I like hearing about your family like in today's video. I showed my 6 yr old some stuff you were making with old fashioned tools and he was like, "that guy is amazing". I really like how you finally got a snowmobile but we don't see it in every video because that's not what you are about. I really hope everything works out for you and your family so you can all live the way you want and not how society says you should.

I'm moving outta my house tomorrow into a tiny apartment and giving most of my stuff to Goodwill. Then I'm spending the rest of the winter fixing up my house so in spring I can sell it. Once I do I'm gonna buy me some land, some tools, and get to work on my dream. You helped light this fire. That's why I love you brother. I'm 44 and I'm not getting any younger.

Watching this during the pandemic of 2020, you were right to get out when you did. Yes, the stock market got a bit better after you posted this, but it's always a gamble, and you did the right thing for your family. And now look at you, miles ahead of the rest of us. While people are struggling to feed themselves and pay their bills, you've been ahead of this all along. People will always think it's crazy when you start preparing BEFORE things go wrong. But they will always wish they were on the other side of it once things go down. Keep doing your thing. You are inspiring us during all this free time and we are going to start a homestead on our family land. Thanks for showing us it's never too late to start fresh, and you CAN do things you really set your mind to. All the best!

Actually, stock markets has been over valued for long time, and waiting for a large correction. It will happen eventually, but the pandemic kind of speed it up ALOT. Which means that the surge in current stock market prices doesn't make much sense since it is suppose to follow the economies of the entire world or nations (that means we just kick the rock down the road). If you get ahead in the market, always reel your net in when you make some good gains. Being a good investor also means that you are actively managing your fund and retirement income, so you can make money off your investment in self sustainable way like what Shawn does at his cabin.

its only a high stakes poker match if you invest in risky crap like he was talking about. the single biggest risk of the stock market is not being in it, and that is historical fact. if you invest in risky penny stocks like he was talking about, and try to "time" the market and jump in and out, etc.....yeah you're gonna get your head handed to you.

As a poker professional I disagree. Most people in live poker drink and barely know how to play. As I never drink and study Game Theory 20+ hours a week poker pros print money.... Print. Lol Espically in small untapped markets outside of regional infested cities like Vegas or LA. Good players can lose any hand, any tournament, but in the lifetime sample size always win. Bankroll management and poor lifestyle choices cause many good players to go broke so not every good player actually has money. The stock market....even I wouldn't gamble on that. Poker is +EV and a zero sum game. Good players win bad players lose over time. Use a better analogy! Lol haha jk ♥️♣️♦️♠️🏆🤔🥇

When the market goes down and you lose money the loss is on paper - until you sell the stocks that have dropped in value. Then you are taking the loss in the wallet and the money is actually lost. The market will correct and come back.

I think you made a great decision Shawn - most economists I know, myself included, think there's too much irrational behaviour in the stock market to selectively pick them by hand. Long-term index funds across the entire market have shown decent returns over time, and you can generally hedge with gold when there's uncertainty in the market... but unless you have money to play with, you're likely better off investing in your own education, skills, reducing debt, or accruing assets like property 👍

ULVER ...after studying econ for 4 years and getting a specialization in it (both a major and a minor in it because I love it that much), I can definitively tell you people still frequently make bad decisions that aren’t in their own best interest, for a whole variety of reasons, even when they’re presented with all the information. For that reason alone, we’re all irrational to some degree, and most classical economic models of yesteryear didn’t account for that irrationality. Most of them assumed that we always acted in our own best interest. More modern fields of research like behavioural economics recognize that we’re often irrational, and understand that while the models might be decent at predicting general trends when there aren’t too many variables involved... we shouldn’t be surprised when someone flips the script and makes a poor decision for everyone involved, like the business partners that Shawn was working with. Hope this helps! :)

Chris Prouse as an Econ major myself, I see where you are coming from but uncertainty and irrational behavior is the name of the game. I will always invest in the stock market though I agree you definitely needs some extra money to do so. It returns on average 9% a year which is far better than most investments. Property has has a difficult time recovering from 2008, value in my area has remained the same for 10 years. Gg f you have a diverse and expansive pro-folio you can mitigate the risks of irrational behavior and market crashes.

Johnny Appleseed - Yeah, that’s why I mentioned in my original comment that index funds across the entire market have shown decent returns... but hand picking individual stocks is troublesome for a variety of reasons, and even the “experts” choosing the portfolios for the large name mutual funds out there have poor track records (and high fees). For anyone who wants to learn more about the differences between an index fund and a mutual fund (or the risk of choosing them by hand), I’d highly recommend searching for the Freakonomics podcast called “The stupidest thing you can do with your money”.

"Playing the market" can be a little like "playing" guitar. Learning Smoke on the Water is a long way from being good. Like anything it takes a little talent, a lot of practice. There are lots of places to learn how to do it right. There are rules. It takes discipline to set up Exit Strategies and stick with them. If you think; I'm going to get rich at this your already upside down. Is it gamed? you bet. Every single thing in life can be gamed. The 2008 recession was caused by guys who know what they are doing, when to get in and when to get out and they are the kind of guys who don't really care if others get hurt while they make a ton of money. Not all of them, but a lot of them. In a nicer world 2008 never would have happened.@@ChrisProuse

As a young man I truly feel like you are a great role model for me and you seem to talk such sense and with such honesty. Hey Shawn, you were about a year ahead of schedule on pulling out of the stock market but its hard to time the peak. I actually watched this a few weeks ago and decided to do the same, because I agree it's over inflated, and with an election year in the States and Corona virus happening, it pretty much made sense to me. Thanks for saving me from heavy losses! I look at all the negative comments from a few months ago and laugh. Now its a matter of timing the bottom to get back in. Your also in a very good position to be less effected by this new global pandemic.

I'm willing to bet this is what he was hinting on the real estate, most likely purchased more land, low property tax, get his own internet station so he won't have to go to town, a ground food storage and between KZread and running a small B&B you can retire very nicely. The trick is to to be handy and like alone time. 😊
