Con artists/thieves are awful because they do more than steal, they make people less trusting, add more stress (having to replace important information etc.) and change who you are and that manifests itself in lots of ways that ultimately are not good for the world. Screw con artists and thieves.

Good idea to have a video of the ample security you have on your property. Also, put a BIG SIGN that says, "BEWARE OF DOG." A time tested and still successful crime deterrent.

Agree 100% that it’s a shame that in the “Wilderness” Security measures MUST rely on modern tech to keep property safe. Crying shame! But on a personal note... @@gloria84073 Ah ok, sounded like CAA to me (which, for any non-Canadians, is our equivalent to Triple A, and they also do home insurance) but of course I could be wrong. :p If he did say CAA, my family also has had positive experiences with them. Either way, glad it worked out!

Here in the US Midwest we still can in our small towns. If we go to a bigger city one of our 100 pound Black and Tans is our 'lock'. But within a 50 mile radius of home, np worries. Of course we live in a very rural area.

My home was burglarized a few years ago, I was living in a rural area and I had become complacent. My lesson from this was - never keep all of your jewelry (my collected antiques as well as family pieces) in one spot....anyway, glad to hear you have areas you don't share as well as off-site storage. Same here. They even took the refrigerator! And my house is in my mom's name so my homeowners insurance that I pay for didn't cover anything. Really sucked. I'll never be able to replace a lot of it. I'd be dancing and praising God for my insurance replacing.

Keep in mind that by giving out this info that anyone who will actually target your cabin specifically, for valuables or other reasons, will now bring a cellular blocker/signal jammer. I know this might sound paranoid, but as a security researcher I have seen this before. Sometimes it's better not to disclose the systems you have in place.

​@@phillee2814 Think of it this way: if someone really wanted to target this particular cabin for whatever reason (Shawn has a pretty large audience, people are unpredictable), in what is essentially the wilderness - before this video, would they even think of bringing a signal jammer? It's essentially an important safety feature rendered useless. Always be very careful to whom you're disclosing what security systems you have installed.

Just a suggestion. Even though security cameras are outdoor rated, it’s still a good idea to keep them covered (many manufacturers recommend that). Cutting a coffee can in half makes a good cover for a camera.

I used to use a modified plastic storage box around my cameras which worked very well until they eventually broke from cold temperatures and UV breakdown. Now I sometimes just put a piece of Gorilla tape or similar over the top and down part of the sides spanning the two halves on my game cameras as a precaution. The top is where the highest leak risk is. I know that leaves the lens hole vulnerable but no problems there yet. It is possible to make game cameras truly leak proof, but just like other consumer grade stuff theyre built to a price point more so than to a quality point.

So glad you was able to get your personal equipment replaced. These videos are such a blessing to all of us. Thank you for doing them.

What a blessing your Insurance company came through for you and also the Oxygen Thief that took your belongings was caught. Here's hoping she cops a hefty sentence. We have a very good security system at home as I have thousands of dollars worth of Drones and Musical Gear. I really like our front Door setup... If someone enters the front "Zone" you could be anywhere on the Globe and you will get an alert tone and a popup on your phone you can then choose to Speak to that person at the same time you are viewing them in real time and they can also speak back. Its just 1 of many cool security gadgets we have. I would say my favorite one though is the Black and Tan one that requires food to Operate, We have a name for that one and it is "Zeus" and he doesn't miss a beat. Pedigree pure German Blood line Rottweiler and is probably the most expensive of the lot. ;-) Really happy everything worked out Shawn!! Take it easy mate - Skorp, Western Australia.

Keeping your local bear population onside might be good for security as well as your human methods of security. Spiders like the cowlings of cameras, provides cover for them along with some warmth. Good idea to clean the lens regularly to keep their webs from obstructing the vision.

I get emails from my system the odd time when a spider happens to venture right across the lens, makes for a freaky picture too! I set up a system for a similar reason, vehicle ransacked when it was accidentally left unlocked. $600 + in cash, equipment etc. Thief left all cards and ID though, just took easy stuff. Shed was broke into previously, so 4 camera system now running.

It is good to have a reliable insurance company. Glad you had that. It is a shame you have to "secure" your remote area. We live pretty remote and have 7 cameras. Love your videos, keep up the great story telling.

That’s good news! We got hit by a tornado on June 2nd in Ottawa. Our ins. Co sent us a cheque 16 days later. Many of my neighbours with other ins. Co. still haven’t had their claims approved.

Make sure at least one camera is capable of capturing vehicle license plate details. Valuable information.

Sorry to hear that... I thought of similar circumstances like a criminal/serial killer on the run seeking refuge etc... You are isolated, so you know it could get crazy. Shawn, There are lock boxes that go under the rear pickup seat (if you have one) that are sold, I think, at Cabella's or on the internet. Handy to have while milling through the 'other' real world. Was the data in the stolen camera held in the cloud or just in the camera? Wonder what she did with the camera...the person that may have it now is as guilty as she is.

Amazing on the insurance. Have used three major companies on insurance over the past 40 years. I am sure between my personal and business I have spent hundreds of thousands on premiums. All of these companies are super well known. Filed legitimate claims with all three. Two companies totally screwed me over and the third stepped up to the plate and made me whole. So, if you were in the U.S. you might have got royally screwed. Then when you do file a claim only two things happen. Both bad. They either raise your rates or drop you. INSURANCE IS A SCAM. Think of this. It is the ONLY thing you pay for that you hope you do not have to use. Imagine if you bought a new truck, your comes up to you and say I sure like your new truck and your response to him is, ""Yeah, I hope I never have to use it"

Thanks for sharing with us so we can protect ourselves too ! Sorry you had to go through that. I'm glad the insurance company came through and the law enforcement were able to apprehend the thief. Too many people trying to take what someone else worked for these days.

Shawn, glad to hear your insurance company looked after you. I'm sure it was quite stressful having to apply for all your licence / permit replacements for everything that was in your wallet. It's such a shame that security is such a necessary precaution in todays world, even in relatively remote areas such as out at your cabin. When I was a child I could remember people leaving car keys in their house door and in their vehicles ignition. Those times seem to be long gone now. I also think it's ironic that some of us, who want to use less technology, and live a simpler life closer to nature, actually now depend on that technology to pursue a more basic natural life.

I’m very glad you let us know the person responsible for your recent losses has been apprehended. That’s the best news I’ve heard recently. And knowing you’ve been fully covered by your insurance company is great, too. But there’s also to be considered the time and effort you’ve now had to invest in replacing those stolen objects, not to mention the added stresses this event has placed on you and your family. I’m sorry that you had to go through this.
