So we have 200 hens on pasture. Over 400 feet from the house in mobile tractors with flexinet moveable solar electric fence. Biggest loss can be from raptors. 2 or 3 roosters with the hens really help. When they see a bird overhead the roosters put out a call and you can see all the hens run to be under the chicken tractors. The rooster guards save us lots of birds. Ditto with the bears and bobcats. Roosters let the hens know when danger is present. There is a purpose for all animals in nature, including the good old rooster.

@@doctordutchFor ketosis you just need a diet with no carbohydrates, and can eat as much as you want. Check your labels, but for the most part that's meat, cheese, eggs, and a limited number of veggies, just NO carbs. Seriously check your labels, carbs are in everything. Keep in mind on this diet muscle building exercises should be avoided as it can damage your organs. Done properly, you will lose weight FAST. consult a doctor for sure.

@@doctordutch Switched at 59. Been just over a year now. Mostly beef (steak, stewing beef, ground beef), small amount of pork and chicken. Redmond's salt, distilled water since 2019. Most think the daily looks bland and boring and I thought that too, in the beginning. After a week, all the tasty treats you craved, whether salty or sweet, just disappear. You start craving beef, beef fat, eggs, bacon, butter, salt, all the things your body has been trying to tell you it wants, ever since you were a kid. I haven't had any carbs, sugars, plants since May 9, 2023 and I don't have to 'try', I just have no urge or craving for any of it. I was a Dorito fanatic, havent had any and don't miss them at all. I feel twenty years younger and I sleep like a baby. So calm, peaceful, no stress, too much energy though. Life changing stuff. Another boon to having them is that they’re always ready to help me by eating the leftovers when I clean the refrigerator out, lol. They love scraps! For mites etc… I use First Saturday Lime in my coop and run. None of the dozens of chickens I’ve ever had have had varmints on them. I mix the rabbits droppings with it . I’ve done that for two years now . My garden is getting most of the organic stuff it needs . I have a mulch bed where everything that’s scraps goes into it . I mix some of that in my garden as well . All the chopped up corn stalks , pea vines , potato vines and stuff like that goes in my mulch bed all year to be put in the garden in the early spring . @shawnjames. Glad to hear you are focusing on nutrient density, vs. just caloric intake. Am interested in what ever happened to the logs you seeded with mushroom spore? Are they fruiting yet? They would be classed as a superfood. And you know how to forage, but many of us don't. Secondly, I live in the USA zone 7B. I have the advantage of being able to grow green veg almost all winter long (spinach, kale, peas, broccoli, celery, lettuce, kohlrabi, parsley, etc.)...but when summer rolls around, that all goes to seed. I'd like fresh (because once you get spoiled growing your own, everything from the grocery store looks almost inedible). I have thought about growing things hydroponically inside during the searing summer heat. And leaving my outside garden to those foods I can preserve (in moderation as, except for sweet potatoes, they are NOT the A-1 veg.) Do you think the AG1 is a replacement for all those winter crops, considering hydroponics are artifically fed (unless you raise the fish whose waste fuels that system-- a major chore)?

The soon coming years are going to be very difficult. I'm so glad Shawn is leading the way for homesteaders to get back to health. We're going to need it very soon. Say, in November.

Come to my house and I’ll show you a backyard garden that I keep adding too every week. Hoping to have a big harvest before I plant the winter vegetables. I have mint in various places of the yard to combat rats, which has been working. Propagating as I go also. Then in my front yard, this will be medicinal plants like chamomile, ginger, garlic for now. Researching other things I can plant in my climate, which is zone 10b. We would love to get chickens, but zoning in my urban area is not too fond of that.

Chickens can be a little extra work but eggs are always a good thing, chickens eat most of the food/garden garbage, they provide fertilizer and can potentially help fighting pest in the garden. All in all they will probably be a nice addition!

Aloha Shawn ⛱️ I really enjoyed this segment you shared about the quality of our intake that most people these days are lacking of true nutrients! The garbage sold in most grocery stores is like plain ruffage ! I can tell the difference especially in quality eggs by the taste and how they look ! Have fun this weekend and hope you find some great layers ,Bard Rock ,Rhode Island reds ,Australorps are my favorites! 🐔 🐥 🥚 HI Calli 🐕 ❤

We have a backyard flock for eggs and meat for the same reasons. Only use organic feed and free range on our property, with 10 hens and one rooster our feed cost is about $4/ dozen but they are a large breed with quite large eggs. Is it worth it? Yes, we know what they eat and they are excellent gardening tools and fertilizers. I use deep wood chip bedding in the greenhouse for the winter which gives us great mulch for garden pathways and compost base.

I live in Texas, we were at a place lot of trees , a table .so we stoped to eat. It was late ,I can't walk good so my son drove his truck up close .when we were getting ready to leave. I guess our truck made some noise there was a huge owl he took off flying just over my head. His wings spand looked like a 747 . It took off scared the heck out off us. It was a white owl. I have never seen such a big one. Beautiful bird I wish I had taken a picture. I was too shocked to think about it.

Good luck with the chicks! Always wondered about nutritional values of food. They measured them in the 70's originally. And it's not like they measure the value every year and all over the nation. And I doubt farmers do soil nutrient tests either. I've assumed the data was off for a long time...

Awesome barred owl footage and nice to healthy two healthy chicks. Hopefully they don't get too invested in your chickens to warrant going after them and potentially injuring themselves in the process. I have a friend who also lives up north in the woods who did the same thing actually. He said he got great eggs but for the predators that live there, it's like putting the holy grail of good eatin' for everyone to notice haha

You’re looking very fit and healthy, Shawn- kudos to you and your wife as you continue this journey to better health - My husband and I do try and take supplements but will try the AG-1- but as with anything we put into our bodies and/or add supplements like this, it’s always wise to check with one’s Doc or NP, PA prior as it may intercere with any current meds one is taking-- I’m a semi-retired cardiac nurse that has our own channel up coming- We Always watch your vlogs, Shawn- All the best, brother

Years ago I lived near a place that had top soil and compost in big piles .you could gig your own. .I took two big trash cans filled them up with mushroom compost. Then tryed to lift them on to the truck. My two sons helped .thay were 10 and 12. It was a struggle but we did it. I dug up the side yard got rid of grass tilled the ground with compost. Planted the whole yard with flowers all purple and yellow and white. It looked so beautiful. There was a big planter by the entry to house with a covered walk way all the plants looked sorry one bush dead, I pulled it out. There was a big hole ,so I filled it up with compost. You wouldent belive how the plants reacted creeping charlie, leaves size of a nickel were now size of a baseball. Spider plant was wild. I pulled out a big one I thought, ,but the baby's had baby's. Ibplanted it in a pot on a iron stand the baby's covered the outside of the pot , about 3 or 4 feet it was gorges. Unfortunately someone stole it and some others one in a wheelbarrow full of flowers. There was mor , but it makes me angry . So I will stop thinking about my loss.
