When I hear of Tilley hats, I always think of the Ontario zookeeper who had his Tilley hat removed from his head and eaten by an elephant - three times! He’d just wait for it to reappear and then wash it and wear it again. Got to be a good recommendation for them. I think the hat is in the Tilley ‘museum’ collection now since the guy retired.
Keep building and soon you'll have to call it James Town.

Low profile, simple, honest, humble, hard working man, typical canadian. 💪🇨🇦
For gloves, I’ve got some elk skin gloves from Badger Claw Outfitters that I would highly recommend. They’re pricy but if you don’t want to chance them, I’ll send you a pair. You’d love them!!
Thank you for covering the clothing line. I've been wondering about the pants for a long time so now I can get my son a pair.
I have the heavier canvas Tilley, I love it. I had one before but I have no idea what happened to it so I got myself another one. I use the handy hidden pocket too.
You are a jack of all trade. 😊I love to watch you work
Darn Tough absolutely stands behind their warranty, no questions asked. They have excellent customer service. They have socks for winter and compression socks as well.
Coming from the land of Columbia Sportswear (The PNW) I can't agree more about the quality and function. All I wear is Columbia Hikers, and the bulk of my outdoor clothing/rain gear is Columbia. Great vid Shawn... Cheers

We have the rain gear from Columia , it's great, have had it a long time, works great.
You have freedom, it don’t happen over night. Love ya all. Mark from Kansas
Keen makes a lot of really tough durable reasonably priced boots. The toes are usually fully covered in rubber so they don't wear out.

I also like Keen. I wear their Targhee II hiking shoes for working outside as well as for hiking. Comfy and durable.
Bugs REALLY love my son-in-law,so when they're bad I take him out in the bush with me. Works like a charm.
Thanks for Sharing! I always love how things are going for you, especially when you're alone. Would love to visit Canada some day! 🇨🇦🤗 Take care and be safe! ❤ from Murray Kentucky!🐴
I just got a Tilley hat like the one you have in this video - mostly because I've seen you wear it so much. I figure If it's good enough for you, I'm sure it'll keep up with me!
Well, lots if good info. Glad you are still using the permethian (sp?) .. it does keep the ticks off! Thanks for sharing. Be safe .. see you at the cabin next time.
I liked learning about what you wear. Thanks!
Your awesome I haven't forgotten what you thought me greater mornings. You are now one of my heroes next to tom Baker and ricard pini.
For gloves I use "Endura" by Superior Glove. ANSI A4 cut resistant, nice flexible deerskin exterior. Lined. Very comfortable / flexible
Great info , I use the same hat, it’s very durable and great sun protection for us guys getting thinner on top! Best to you, be safe.
I have a pair of Vasque Eriksson GTX Mens hiking boots that I wear for working outside & they are brilliant. Really comfortable, breathe, don't rub, ankle support and so tough, highly recommended!
I had a pair of Gortex Tanker glove, great for the winter.
Hey Shawn I use Shoe Goo on my Merrels and running shoes to stop the toe flap from happening. Just run a bead along where the sole meets the upper. Thanks for such great videos. All the best to you and yours and of course Cali too👍😎
I was a Merrell fan for years and I even met the Rep for New England! I too noticed that in recent years they were not as durable. I have moved on to Oboz and really like them. They remind me of the way Merrell used to wear.
I like how you just keep coming up with things to build your amazing man thank you for your vedots so enjoyable to watch
THANK YOU for sharing!!! I just started oiling down my leather gloves... HUGE DIFFERENCE, No more wet hands and no more stiff gloves. I love how soft the gloves have become. I oil down my leather shoes, never thought to oil down my leather gloves. It was more out of curiosity wondering if it would make a difference. Love my muck boots, wear them all the time when I'm out in the yard, still on my first pair. I get my outside clothes from the 2nd hand store...Amazing Finds and Great Buys! Can never seem to keep a hat on my head, resorted to bandanas but they end up around neck. I use citrus oils like lemon and orange on my skin. Not sure why they work but the bugs don't like me and I don't hate the smell. Learning so much! I want to live in harmony with the land and your channel is teaching me so much for when I do get my raw land I will have the knowledge to apply. My dream is to build a healing center. THANK YOU for sharing you and all your knowledge with us!!!
Well done Shawn. Thank you for sharing. Be well.
That sounds like the Rolls Royce of Hats! cheers
Hey Shawn, I've seen you wearing Eddie Bauer stuff in the past. As an avid outdoorsman myself, I find there stuff reasonably durable. But what I like best is their lifetime warranty on all products. They've taken back some stuff I've had for many years that wore out. My only suggestion is to avoid the outlet stores (i.e. Cookstown). The outlet products are inferior, and wont last nearly as long. Thanks for your tips!
Not sure if they still do, but Tilley hats were guaranteed for life. If it wears out, they'll replace it, but I've had mine for a long long time and haven't worn it out.
Tilley hats are great! A bit on the expensive side but I love the idea they can go through the digestive tract of an elephant and still be fine after a wash! :-)
Love your videos all the way from Virginia
Hey Shawn, I never actually thought about your clothing that much, I just assumed your an outdoors person so you wear outdoors clothing, but now watching this video it all makes a lot of sense, logical sense, which coming from you doesn't at all surprise me. I just learned some different things for dressing during different seasons as well. Thank You. Oh and I was 100% serious about coming up and helping you with the Green house and Shop build. If you are interested then give me a good heads up so I can arrange things with work here. Peace, Happiness, Love and Laughter, Keep Safe All, -Matt
Shawn, you have one of the great brains
Shawn. As far as footwear goes Peter Limmer & Son intervail N.H. I have had mine since the mid 70's they have been all over the planet. I hiked the Application trail in them 20 years ago and wore them just the other day to do some bush wacking. Once you break them in you will never want another brand.
Ive always loved that quote except here in Ireland it goes a bit different we say 'Fail to prepare, prepare to fail'! Keep up the good work shawn love your videos bud
Good Thursday Shawn & Cali!👍

You always look handsome, I love outdoor clothing. I live in Montreal, and I noticed awhile ago in the subway, the trend is toward the outdoor labels, hiking boots and buffs rule the city now. I found Sorel boots to be long lasting, had a pair of pack boots since the 90's, I just gave them away, new liners and they looked like new. It seems I had to size up when I got older lol. Arthritis, I think . cheers!
one of nicest and modest youtuber! watching all your videos
I highly recommend Bean Boots. They’re well made, guaranteed, and last.
Looking good Shawn! I love your cooking ASMR.
This was very helpful. Thank you, Shawn.
I do a lot of hiking and I do find the merrell boots comfortable but they do wear out in about a year or two at the most. Darn Tough are the socks I wear when hiking but I have found to keep me warm around town I wear Fits they are very comfortable Merino wool for everyday wear. I thought your pants were Fjallraven and love the hat i will have to buy one thanks.
Whatever you wear you make it look good.
For fall and winter boots I would look at Danner Ft Lewis. I have had one pair for 30 years and they have been resoled twice. They are a little heavier but they are bomb proof.
I love Darn Tough socks & Columbia PFG clothing. Good value & Columbia knows where to put pockets for practical use. Hats are always an issue for me too but they also protect the eyes from some glare so learning to wear them is important. Perhaps that brand of hats is worth the extra cost - will look into them again. Thx.
1) Two ticks in upstate NY near the lake. Never had ticks before, they were just in the yard. They are moving north. 2) Check with an outfitter that carries Darn Tough socks. Some places have exchange programs. They give you new socks and send old ones back to company without you having to mail them.
Darn Tough - socks 🧦 are All I now wear. Very comfortable and moisture wicking.
Great video Shawn,,I was wondering about tics when I watched your last video. Great info.
Try Keen brand shoes. Lots of styles and choices. Best for durability. I enjoy both your channels, keep it up.
Shawn, I wear moabs to work. They give great support and cushioning and are the best boots for me as they are light and do not damage my tendons. I walk so far generally that the tread is off, nine months to a year depending upon how busy I am. They will do all year, here in Scotland. I have a 20 year old Gortex Spray Way jacket, which is still great and just makes it around the bump in the middle. It is itself a free replacement for one that dared to leak! Spray Way fleeces to stand alone in autumn or zip in in winter. I wear Dickies workwear as I'm urban and moleskins in winter. T shirts like yours and Aran sweaters my wife knits. Remember, no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing! Regards Stephen. Oh! Yes. I get my gloves 3 pairs for £20 from Costco. Feel like pig skin. Very good.
For durable boots, try the leather iron-ridge boots from Cabelas (not the fabric ones). Mine have taken a ton of abuse and never let me down. Thanks for this video - I always look forward to news from the cabin!
Danner boots, tough boots worn by military, popular in logging they also have lighter style boots. Good comb with Columbia products both from Portland, Oregon.
I found a Canadian company for wool socks called Stanfield. Very good sock and not very expensive. Wear them hiking and with Mukluks.
Wear what is comfortable that can keeps you dry and bug proof. Carry on as you are doing very well. Have a super wonderful day.
Great review of your clothing. Thanks.
Darn Tough socks is in Northfield Vermont, my hometown. Also building a place in Waterbury Vermont as well. Wooden tool handles. My dad taught me to sand the finish off the wooden handles, the finish is just to make them look better in the store and it will give you blisters. Once sanded mix boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits in a 1 to 1 mix. Wipe the handles down once a day for a week, once a week for a month and month for a year then yearly and that handle will last you years if you don't break it. I do it, it seems to work for me and the splinters don't seem occur.
You always remind me of Indiana Jones with the hat !!
Your both channels are amazing. Keep it up. Thanks
Literally AS you mentioned your affinity for Fjallraven's clothing, a notification appeared: an email from fjallraven had arrived. I love the way the universe works, sometimes. BTW, cannot recommend Darn Tough highly enough. A terrific product and they DO honor their replacement warranty. I don't like taking advantage of it (I mean, the socks did their service and lasted as long as I could ask) but the few times we've sent back socks (we wear them constantly), they've honored it.
I really enjoy your videos. I noticed though in your voice and manner you seem down. I saw your video about being alone again. I hope you and your family are reunited soon. You're not alone we your subscribers are here for you xx
not that far from you and love your videos. much love from Duffern County
I have a Columbia fleece jacket that I use late Autumn, Winter days above freezing, and early Spring days. Haven't worn it out in the 8 years that I have had it. I live in SE Wisconsin.
Very good, thank-you!
Informative video. Thanks for sharing your valuable experience Mr.Shawn. Wishes from Sri Lanka.
Everyone in the know wears Darn Tough socks... they are the just the best. Also, you can’t go wrong with Danner boots
I have worn Merrill boots for decades. Had an all leather pair from the 90's that lasted until the tread wore off the bottom (15 years!!!!!). Bought a replacement pair, similar to your Moab, and was VERY disappointed. They fell apart in a year.

Darn tough socks they are from Vermont I just did a job at the factory awesome people hopefully they hold up for you I bought some while I was there I got them pretty cheap
for my work and was on my feet alot i used steel cap boots there not heavy and lasted me about 10yrs my last pair before that about 10yrs to my employer supplied the first pair about $100 Australian brand was dingo boots something my local company hear in Adelaide Australia they do wear well and last and believe me i have drooped stuff on my feet to and no problem i was very lucky
To parody a common phrase, "Quality has a quantity all of its own." I still have my old pair of Red Wing wellington boots, they need resoled, and were $180 on sale back when I bought them, but they have lasted ten years. I bought a new pair and had to take them back because the seams blew out. Also have some awesome old clothes I picked up from Salvation Army and Goodwill, which have some of the best "vintage" stuff I know of. (However, buying that red silk paisley shirt for a dollar may have been a bad idea...)
Shawn wish you the best
Hi Shawn look into KEEN shoes. I used to wear Merrill but I prefer KEEN now. Keens are waterproof also.

I agree. Will never buy Merrill boots again. KEEN boots last much longer and are super comfortable. Very waterproof. They have a very good arch support and a wider toe box, which I like for colder weather wear.
Red head socks are great winter socks and also Guaranteed for life,Shawn and you can buy them at Bass Pro. I have two pair and They keep my feet warm and they're so comfortable I practically wear them all winter. They fit tight and don't fall down. Check them out at Bass Pro made by Red Head.
There are kevlar gloves available good for working on all sorts of thing
Marigolds keep bugs away. Good companion plant for the yard and garden. Has colorful flowers, too. There are bugs and then there are bugs. Then, there are hatches across the Northern Shield region. I have seen grown men cry and seen weekends ruined from bugs.
Really great information Thanks for sharing
Good info Shawn! 👍👍💯💯
I worked outside almost my entire life and while doing so I wore white long sleeve button down shirts and white pants, (not painters pants). I was a plasterer. I wore a white hard hat and white cotton gloves. White reflects the heat mush better than any color of clothing. Yes they did get dirty faster but again the positives out weighed the Negatives. Back in the early days of plastering workers wore black bow ties. A tie was needed to keep the plaster from falling on to your neck when working over your head. I'm not sure why more people don't wear white clothing while working outside?
@CabinDweller

Bob Jones I agree, I try to wear as much white as I can for mosquitoes.
I was not aware there was clothing with tic repellent infused into the fabric, Mm always sprinkled our shoes and socks with sulfa powder. She even open out sock tops and sprinkled it inside as well. Our biggest issue was ticks and chiggers!
Honestly, who needs expensive high class name brand clothes!! I have begun to realize, all these materialistic things I own don't mean anything! Thank you for the info, looking forward to some more 😎

@@DK-jd8bj every article of clothing you buy has a brand label on it somewhere. I'm referring to the name brand clothes that teenagers wear today.
Elizabeth L. Johnson said, Wow, the detail! Thanks! I have to find pants that are cooler and more durable than denim.
Maravilloso entorno .
You should try a steelcap work book in leather. Hubby uses a brand called "steel blue" and they last him years. He works in a coal mine in australia and these boots take him through mud, wading in water, up washplants, and thru oil and all sorts of gross disgustingness LOL As well as having his feet in them for 14hrs a day for 7 days at a time and often in 49C heat. They last yeaaars. Might be worth a try if you can get your hands on a pair.
You should do an episode of what you’ve spent so far. Cost of land, tools etc
You'll get a good test of that permethrin clothing against ticks when you come out here.

Isn't permethrin toxic?
I was wondering about the tick situation up there ever since I subscribed. In my neck of the woods (by the Chesapeake bay) ticks are a constant nuisance. The only effective means of dealing with them that I've found is to wear rubber boots and to hose those boots down with bug repellent before setting foot on anything off the beaten path. Failing to do that will get you one of these little bastards trying to climb you in about 5 minutes. Good to see that you've not had that problem. Looking at the lyme prevalence maps -- they seem to have spread quite a lot in the past decade.
Boa noite adoro voçe sua família e principalmente Cali.adorável
Great video.
Hy, I am from Romania ( Eastern Europe) and I like hiking. For boots I recommend in this order 3 brands : Meindl, La Sportiva and Lowa, they are pricy but they worth it, because they are sturdy.
Awesome
Perhaps one of those wide-brimmed, safari-type hats that also have flaps to protect the neck -- same sort of material as your current hat.
Yep agree on Merrell boots they really don't last, leather is the only way to go out there, just keep a tin of dubbing in hand
try the wool tilley for the winter, i have also the wax and canvas and a white sun tilley
I agree with you about shoes and boots. They just don't make them as good as they use to. I bought a pair of Tennis shoes last year the toe part of the shoe started coming apart. I have super glued my soles a couple;e of times already. You might say why don't I just go buy myself another pair. You see I wear size 14 wide and not just any store carries a Tennis shoe that size.
Nice clothes and making handsome Mr Shawn James..🙂👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I really appreciate all the info about your clothing ware! Hoping my son gets the itch! He’s a very masculine 16yr old and is very talented in lots of things thank you for being an inspiration to him as you well know men can be influenced by the femininity world easily! I love your channel your such a role model for real men
gotta love canada peace Shawn
Shoes ? Have a look at "Waldviertler". I use a pair of them for more then 10 years ... but probably not aviable in Canada and the US.
Have you ever tried Canadian military mukluks? nylon boot with a doubled up wool liner plus 2 removable insoles...bottom one is some sort of mesh and the one above it I think is a wool...waterproof... the outer sole is a bit heavy but not crazy heavy....gives you a ton more flexibility/movement than Baffins or any other winter boot I've tried...
I have an old pair of leather boots, Got them slightly used 25 years ago. They are my "lucky"hunting boots. I have spent at least $120 on repairs over the years.......hahaha!
