It’s your dream to live. I enjoy the show not because I have expectations, I watch because it takes me away from my hectic life for a short while.

Shawn .....I'm 75, I'm a retired architect, yet in my life, I've left the main stream many times doing my own projects and various adventures by which many thought I was nuts. Example, I'm presently residing in Southeast Asia causing most friends to be so damn angry, they refuse to communicate. I often reflect how most wish for me to have lived life as they wanted, or conformed to their way of thinking or just plan dang critical ...and all I can think is, they need to live their life and allow me to live my life. Viewers or friends who are critical are NOT walking in your shoes. WE can't go through life pleasing others, they're never satisfied and it makes us miserable. Personally, I think what your doing is all GREAT ...just spread some hay over that exposed earth to help stop the erosion & the grass will grow more quickly. Hang in there Shawn, your doing fine. Thanks so very much for allowing all of us to watch your progress over the years. Blessings

I'm a female, 76. We used to own a family cottage but I was forced to sell. Family matters. Rather than have the money sit in the bank, I bought what I could afford, a 10 acre lot with mobile home. A well and satellite connection. I hadn't planned to spend much time here but do now because of the virus. My friends think I lost it. In my younger years I lived in the Ottawa valley with hippies who have since passed on. I think my older friends are nuts for living in the city with all that virus going on. Everyone should do what they feel like as long as no one gets hurt. This is my lifestyle. Me and my 2 dogs. My family do the 5 hour drive once every 2 weeks to make sure I have food supply and am o.k. Do what you feel like doing, live your life to your enjoyment and not for others.

I'm nearly 76. I had my cabin in the woods and a home in Fresno CA. I think there comes a time when one "ages out". My wife and I used to love to work for an entire day at the cabin. As you get older, work becomes more difficult and the work hours shorter. It is not my life story, only a chapter. I think the planning and building was more fun than the living. That's just me though. I admire what you have done and your willingness to "Think out loud" for your watchers/listeners.

Shawn...i was one of those few who stopped watching your episodes for a year and a bit. Not because i do not believe that what you are doing is lost or that you have lost the plot, its just that i started to get a bit jealous seeing someone with a goal as strong as yours. i will never be able to do what you are doing simply because i live in a country that is crime infested and property like that is worth millions. But then one day my son came to me and started to ask about what it would be like to live a self reliant life in the wilderness, tucked away from everything and living off the land. I immediately could refer him to your videos and now i am back catching up on the footage you have made, with my son. See, i see it as what you are doing might not be possible for people like me and my family, but it brought me and my son together watching the dream that is possible in both our hearts. Please do not feel discouraged and do not listen to negativity. Reading the stuff what most of your subscribers are saying is a blessing to see that we as a society need your footage to keep our self believing in a life where we can escape to..even if it is just you sitting looking a fire for 40min, My son constantly asks me when we can watch "The mountain" man videos again!! You mean more to us than what you think. Thanks James.

As a non native speaker of the english language I'm not so familiar with the difference between the words envious and jealous, but maybe jealous is a more negative word of the two? Anyway I'm also a little envious about what Shawn is doing, but I'm definitely not nonindulgent toward him and what he does! And that's a big difference. He inspires me's and give me good ideas on how to build and other things. I think maybe what Schalk is saying is that it also can hurt if you're for example living in a country where this isn't possible to do or if you have other obstacles that is difficult or maybe impossible to overcome. I of course indulge Shawn in what he''s doing and I think it's a shame he has to move because of nonindulgent and overly childish neighbours and other things. I would have loved to see him develop this place to what he wanted. It hurts to see him spending about 6-7 % of his lifetime on a project he has to walk out on. Although it doesn't seem he's too depressed over it, and he has probably gained a lot of experience during these years that he can apply on his new project.

I find it ironic that people are watching a guy on their computer, who's making videos with his digital camera and editing them on his computer, build is "self reliant" lifestyle and complaining that it's not "natural" enough. Shawn has always been completely open about the practical limitations of self reliance, and is working to maximizing his within the context of a modern interpretation of that goal. I think the balance is as good as is practicable and I've learned a great deal from watching him. I've enjoyed being brought along for the experience. Good riddance to those who think they could do better...from the parents basement. Thanks Shawn and keep up the good work. It's been inspiring.

That's real close to what I was going to comment. I helped my dad build a log cabin in the early to mid 80s. He did as much as he could but the foundation work (it was built on a slab) was done in trade for work out of his 9-5 job (owner-operator of Mid-State Tire and Auto) He was also a machinist, welder, fabricator, blacksmith, gunsmith, etc. I cant do half what he accomplished. How someone can sit in front of a screen and criticize Shawn is beyond me! Let them go into the woods and live off the land. No power tools, 4-wheeler, Generator, chainsaw, etc. and do better! It cant be done. Not 100%. No way.

Most of them don’t realize they are jealous of what you have done, which is absolutely amazing, and they are too lazy or not motivated to go to that much trouble for themselves. I am 79 years old and if I were young again I’d love to do it too. I LOVE to garden. It is my passion! I am very proud of you and for you for all you’ve done. Live, love and be happy!! I would like to concur with the sentiments others have commented. My husband and I are long-time subscribers and watch every week. I even bought him one of your Cabin Life t-shirts for his birthday a couple weeks ago. The cool part about what you do is live your dream, but the operative word there is "your." You owe no apologies to anyone for how or what you do. It's up to you. As a professional historian who specializes in the European Middle Ages, where virtually everyone lived the type of localized, self-sufficient, agricultural life you are trying to create, I'd like to say a few things as they relate to what you seem to be apologizing for and/or trying to do.... First, I think you are using the terms "mountain man" and "homesteader" interchangeably, which is somewhat incongruent. Those are two different types of lifestyle. In the tradition of the American West at least (and I'm assuming things were similar in Canada?) a mountain man lived a pretty solitary, unsettled lifestyle, mainly living off the land through hunting, fishing, trading, trapping, etc. Whereas homesteaders created small settled farms and lived on agricultural produce they grew and traded with others. I believe you are trying to homestead. Second, as part of a traditional homestead experience in the past you'd find almost no one who wasn't relying on domesticated animals such as horses or mules (for labor and transport), cows (for meat, milk, and manure), or sheep/goats for the same, etc. I know you have had chickens, but the issue you bring up in this episode about not being able to potentially generate enough daily calories on your own is one partially born out of a choice not to include these animals and attempting to rely solely on hunting, fishing, trapping, and gardening. Having to supplement food supplies by going into town is not a failure. Even Dick Proenneke got a periodic visit from the "grocery store." Third, you seem to apologize for needing the neighbor's help. Here is another area where the modern romantic idea of living off the land diverts from how people who actually did so in the past functioned: Community is a necessity for survival. Period. Almost NO ONE dreamed of living in isolation free from needing the assistance of others. There is independence and then there is misguided independence, and it was simply tantamount to suicide to try and live without the help of others. Trading goods, helping each other through borrowing and exchanging labor, and even providing companionship because this type of life even for the most private of people can quickly become one of drudgery and loneliness, were all elements that enabled everyone to survive throughout essentially all of human history. Tribes were developed for a reason. Lastly, I think it's inescapable for the times in which we live that you will end up living a hybrid life of sorts. We live in the modern era and escape from the rat race and self-sufficiency is a dream and/or fantasy for many. You provide a small window into that escape for legions of people who will never achieve what you have. Again, the best part about watching you (other than Cali!) is that you are doing your own thing. Very few people get to do that, so we understand the limitations that living in a modern, post-industrial context might impose on how you achieve your dream. As I always caution my students, "historical context matters." You live now, not in the 19th century or the Middle Ages, and so it's perfectly okay to live in accordance with one's time. Just put your own twist on it and live your best life. I think THAT is the most important example you hold up for others, not whether you are getting the nit-picky details correct. Keep livin' the dream. "Authenticity" is what you make it.

And along the way you have realized that there are other things that you can add or remove from the base idea in order to sustain yourself and provide for your family... Sir people seem to forget that if people do not adapt to situations, nature, seasons, etc. Then they fail... Sir please keep doing what you are doing for you and your family. For decades I have often heard that "sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me". It wasn't until I was 50 that I realized that was all a lie. Words can hurt and sting a persons heart and unsettle you. I am sad that others disappointment concerns you to a point you feel you have to explain yourself. Thanks so much Shawn for sharing your dream with us, no matter how many modifications are needed to increase your independence for you and your family. I thoroughly enjoy watching your journey, it's a very special and precious piece of work for one to contemplate and ask themselves what our journey should be.

I disagree. If someone is doing this just for their own benefit then they wouldn't need a monetized youtube channel or even a channel at all. Your audience is your customer. Their attention and their time and their opinion is worth money. If you don't care about your customer then what is the point for the customer. Btw the old adage 'Sticks and stones..' you quote is incorrect. It ends with '... but names can never hurt me. Which is a different meaning than 'words'. Yes, our interactions should be kinder but falling into the PC world of trigger words and words are violence is a slippery slope to stay away from. When did we all become so sensitive that we want to avoid the reality of meanings.

I know he's alone to build his multi-use workshop and green house he's always talked about for two years and he and his wife had to find another normal residence for his daughters to return and stay with mom during the pandemic. I'm pretty sure his family have not forsaken the guy and left him altogether, but you probably have the inside scoop on their life so I won't question that. Anyway I realize the homestead is his dream but I feel almost certain his family was part of the plan. Meanwhile I'll just keep watching.

Dude, I can't imagine anyone having issue with what you're doing. There's no rules. I have always felt like you're simply graciously sharing your journey to discover a life/life style that fulfills your desire to feel one with the world (natural and civilized). I sometimes scratch my head trying to understand other people who say, "I'm not living by their rules" and then they judge others by some doctrine associated with their beliefs which is really just another set of rules - seems hypocritical and for me at least - anyone trying to impose their belief system on me is at somewhat offensive (e.g. I'm not leaving one doctrine master for another...). Your videos are great, your philosophy is fantastic and your pragmatic acceptance that not everything modern is evil is reassuring. In the real world, there's no absolutes. Satisfaction is directly related to finding one's own "right" balance and leaving judgement of others behind. Thank you. I've been sharing your videos (on both channels) with my kids since the beginning and they are meaningful.

Bottom line is that I've learned a lot watching Sean's videos. I'd bet good money that the same type of person who judges him as less than an "ideal" homesteader wouldn't last 2 weeks trying to build their own place, let alone put in all of the work Sean has done over the last 4 years to get to the point where he is now. Just watching him cut down trees, logging, stumping, building up those mounds of earth, scrounging for loam, etc. etc. to build up a garden that will be fertile enough to give him good crops - Geez Louise - that exhausts me. And I haven't lifted a finger! At 68, I know how much it takes to get out there when it's 90 degrees F and 67 dew point and it feels like you're in a sauna in the middle of the Sahara Desert that I am exhausted after cutting a front lawn that is maybe 70 feet x 20 feet. Sean isn't anywhere near my age, but it's not going to get any damn easier for him. Those who think they can do it "better" - then get off your butts watching these videos on KZread and get out there and do it yourselves. PROVE IT TO YOURSELF YOU CAN DO IT BETTER. Ha.

In my ancestry, I have a true Mountain Man, John Coulter (sometimes spelled Colter). He was the first white man to discover the Yellowstone area, which on the earliest maps is called "Coulter's Hell". He was one of the first Mountain Men in what has become the USA, and he was not entirely self-sufficient. He had to buy food supplies now and then, though he would live off trapping and fishing in winter, with the staples he had laid up in advance, and in the Spring he made his way to the nearest fort or trading post and traded furs for more staples when he ran low. John Coulter was one of the youngest on the Lewis & Clark expedition to go from St. Lewis to find a way through the Rocky Mountains and eventually to the Pacific Ocean. This was in the very earliest of the 1800s, and no one had yet found a route. It was considered a very dangerous quest. He is my favorite ancestor and was greatly respected in his day as a man of his word, of good and steady character, brave, loyal, and independent. He was an excellent boatman, fisherman, hunter and trapper. You remind me of him. I think what I admire most about what you are doing, and have already done, is that as things have changed, you have stayed true to your dream and made what modifications you needed to make without ever giving up the dream. Adding gardens and a pond--what "abandoning" is this to becoming ever more self reliant? It isn't abandoning at all, but increasing the dream. You have my 100% respect and admiration. I'm a long time subscriber and am not going anywhere. You post, I watch. I only wish I had been lucky enough to find a man of your character, integrity, and dreams to make a life with, doing what you are. Your wife and family are lucky to have you.

You should start looking at Fan Only options, because this journey is about you and I am just sitting here eating dinner thinking, “ok where is the dog and how did he dig out that? “ maybe you could just post a trailer here and then your content elsewhere, where you have more control over any abuse. This is an interesting channel. I just started watching this recently, and because my time is valuable, I don't stay watching if I feel something isn't useful. Your videos are. You are doing a great service to others. I don't think you realize this but it's true. Yes, much has changed in our world but some things have not. Caring, family, faith, hard work and resiliance, to name a few, have not. You have accomplished a heck of a lot on a short time. What you have discovered is invaluable, too. These are life skills we have to learn in any stage of life. We're growing everyday...... Our forests here in Northern California burned recently. Many have lost everything. It is beyond words to describe. Many people watch your videos now with a newfound interest to see that there are still people like you who have bounced back after a loss. And in fact, some have gained even more by learning powerful lessons especially from our fire and rescue persons, and other helpers. Please consider teaching your skills to the younger ones. Apprenticeship is a long lost trade nowadays. My own son learned much from elders over the years and I don't think he would have learned it any other way without good solid men who took the time to pass it down (and up) to him....sometimes for "free." He helped many others as I am sure you could also use with having some kind of barter system where you could teach your skill in trade for labor /help??? in your area. (Suggestion) Or at least write a book because what you are doing is so valuable. ❤ Just saying. Good luck and best wishes in all you do for yourself and others.

When my husband & I purchased our 63 acre block here in NZ I was 6 months pregnant with our youngest son who is now 8 (with 2 older sons 23 & 27 lol) We had no power & the water into the existing home wasn’t working. We had a gas hob & a fireplace. We had grand ideas of how we were going to live in the bush etc. My husband still works & now we have a off-grid power setup. (Water wheel & solar panels). A wood stove oven (it doesn’t snow up here - subtropical) that heats the home & water & we cook on/in it. Internet, & a large vegetable garden that is growing constantly.... We have rivers surrounding the house & yard area so irrigation is set up also & the harbour is a 25 minute drive away (Excellent fishing. Known for Marlin). We usually shop once a month or longer. During lockdown was a bit different. We had enough food to get through but certain things were hard to come buy due to the panic buyers, which changed our shopping routine. But, It has made us look at being cut off from all the outside conveniences & what we need to know. We’ve raised pigs, milked a house cow, have chickens. But you’re so right. It’s very hard to completely break from certain needs. We’re lucky that most of our neighbours are like minded. But yea, I totally get what you’re saying. And having family means responsibility. Yup, it’s not as easy as some would think..... Unless you’re part of the Hollywood version 🤣.... Your vids are so enjoyable. They remind me of why we moved here. That untamed drive, inspiration.

Curtis Ep Thank you. It is beautiful during rain or shine. And we are continuously learning. We both grew up in the country but our home allows us to explore all kinds of things. We could never live this kind of freedom in a built up area..... Hubby was a trained plumber but never had building experience. Now he knows so much more.... I was crap at gardening but now I’m in love with it. All due to necessity. Good thing about our property. You have to cross 2 fords (river crossings) to get to us. And our 8 yr old son Hunter loves his home. It’s one big adventure park. ❤️ I do have uploaded videos of some of our journey. I haven’t really gotten use to the whole camera/vid editing/ KZread thing yet. 👍

Hi In Canada there are two organizations that would love to know about the wellness of your off grid children: Children's Aid Society and Catholic Children's Aid Society Also any "dwelling" that are larger than 100 sq feet has to meet all Building Codes(provincial) Standards and Safety Standards . Homesteading has been abolished in Canada long time ago,........ Off grid is possible as long as It doesn't involve any family life. Greetings and salutations to all.............. Please correct me if I am outdated.

G'day Shaun, I've only just started watching and feel that those who are disappointed in your efforts are fickle types who probably wouldn't have it in them to do what you have achieved already. To believe that this type of lifestyle could be achieved with no monetary input, in this day and age, is a little short sighted. There is a lot that goes into becoming self sufficient and I feel you have done a brilliant job. I have watched many of your videos with tears in my eyes. The serenity, the hard work, the reward you are a special type of bloke and an inspiration. Thanks for sharing your journey with us I hope one day I can do as you have done. All the best, from Australia.

As a younger man who loves how much you've given to learn from, and is excited that the cotent continues, I appreciate your thoughtfulness in reaching out to the few who might be disappointed. I commend you for caring enough to explain that you don't intend to hurt anyone's dream by embracing your own. To me that is an invaluable quality in a mentor, to make the effort to explain that disagreement doesn't have to mean cancellation, but is actually an opportunity for unity through diversity. My Step Dad always says : To each their own. Over time i realized its usually in relation to showing me a valuable lesson. A lesson he acknowledges that I have the freedom to accept or reject as a man myself. In short I agree with most of the comments below that you don't need to explain yourself, but thanks for reminding us that a man can if he wants to. I believe that is something to aspire to and you have my respect.

After reading Henry David Thoreau's "Walden," I did a lot of research on him and the place. He would walk to his mother's house once a week to do his laundry! I'm sure there are other funny examples of just how much humans rely on each other and, personally, I think that is noble, not demeaning. What stands out on your channel is your work ethic -- the fundamental energy that is required for that lifestyle and what most people lack. Thanks for your videos!

I think most of us just enjoy watching what you do. I've learned so much about things just watching you. If people are disappointed, then that's sad for them and not your responsibility. I always tell my kids that if someone called me lazy, they'd be lying. I'm retired and a full time homesteader without the homestead. To be self reliant, you have to bust your butt constantly. Today I chopped 30 pounds of vegetables, canned and dehydrated them, fertilized the garden, watered the garden by hand, took care of my 94 year old neighbor, and then all the every day stuff that has to be done. Even though no one sees any if this, I'm super proud if what I can accomplish. You're giving people free content that they can take or leave and some complain. Ridiculous and wreaks of entitlement. Thanks Shawn for being just a great human being.

Life and dreams are ever evolving. A life without change is no different than being caught in the grind. You begin to live others expectations of your plan. Then your right back were you started from. Yes, in a much more visual trap. You owe nothing to anyone but those you love. You owe only to yourself. Do not compromise. It’s your dream , ever changing that I follow. I honestly would unfollow if you didn’t struggle, change and modify. Please continue to follow whatever inspiration leads your journey. Most hate comes from ignorance. Keep educating.

Absolutely, dreams or hope instantly changes but sometimes so subtle that one can't feel "when did it change." And yes, never give up. As long as we have life, live. This being said, cherish time spent and be cognizant of your dreams and do not put off what you can do today. "Next Year" can be viscous. I agree that I was amazed in the beginning, a man building a homestead with his own hands using traditional methods from materials from the land. These were the wonderful times, in the beginning. No disrespect to the later videos, but the initial videos were just wonderful in a simple way. I am a very philosophical person so I can appreciate his later videos and the spin-off of Shawn James. But is just doesn't compare with the genuine and fresh beginnings, and this is no fault of Shawn; just his journey which is ever evolving. Godliness bless...

No, not “disinterested. Just not watching as often as I was previously. Having lived with my grandparents on a “farm” some 60 years ago where we pretty much did everything possible by hand I understand how much work it takes to do what you are doing. It’s not easy nor always fun doing those things that need doing. My grandfather was the toughest many I have ever known in my 72 years and I believe you are right there with him. So hang in there and if there are those who say you are buckling under well tell the to try to keep up with what you’ve done for just one month.
