I Made a DS Style Game in 10 Months...

➤Play the Game - lazyalarm.itch.io/stop-the-tr...
A Year ago, I made a little DSi style FPS 3D game called Stop the Tropi-Choppa in Unity for a game jam. I spent 10 months remaking and improving upon the game in Godot. This devlog is the story of the game development related troubles I faced along the way.

Yo man congratulations. The "Sticking with a game beyond the initial spurt of inspiration" is very relatable. It's the reason I often stop a new hobby I've been doing after a week or two. I hope you'll continue making gamedev vids! They're very entertaining

I love this video! it's incredibly inspiring. I've been making games on and off for over 10 years now and I've never finished a single game! I set myself a goal at the start of the year that I wanted to release a finished game this year, regardless of how good or long it was. So far I have the basic mechanics down, and then I needed to come up with a story and art and thats where I've left it for the last 3 weeks, I haven't touched it. I think this is the inspiration I needed to load up my godot project again.

It's very motivating to hear you struggling with the engine - I know, sounds weird, but I come from unity and learned Unreal for the last few months. Mainly environment stuff like creating master materials, how blueprints work and overall performance stuff for large game environments, besides all the 3D stuff. I wanted to dive deep now with Unreal since I have one month of free time and create my own game - isometric top down - and thought I might be prepared for the task, since I know some coding and gameplay implementation from unity - and struggled for two days to learn how to even move an actor with a mouse click! Great video and inspiring to keep at it, we all can make it (implement motivational workout music)!

So, are you staying with Godot? Also, a large part of my first 100 hours with Godot was trying to figure out Raycasting. 😄 I'm actually editing a video about the experience right now. While I'm making it, I started wondering, "Are people actually going to sit through a ~20 minute video about game development?” Heh, but that's what I just did right now. While taking a break to eat lunch, I watched this video. It was nice. 🙂

@@carsextendedwarranty I like Godot. I'm currently trying to build the “Hedging” game with it. The software is impressive. So much so, that I have to move up the 3D artwork / animation piece of the project. While I don't know exactly how much time and effort is required for the development side, I feel confident that I can finish the game with Godot. That's when I had to stop and wonder - can I actually make the art for the game? 😄

People Care. I suggest making a really simply game that takes 2-4 weeks to complete, and that comes from somebody who spend 5 years on a game XD but I would often stop when I encountered a problem that was too big or difficult for me, causing me to loose motivation, we just need to keep it simple.

Damn I feel this, especially the ending I’ve released of 30+ game jam games but I personally don’t view that as a release titled. Even after releasing 4 games on android /apple I still can’t finish my projects too. One thing that was holding me back was my morality of copying. Wanting to be so different and trying too hard. Taking a step back and just creating. I’ve released 3 games now in 8 months and i feel so much better and confidence is at an all time high. I urge others to not try so hard and start small

Yes I have 7K videos people enjory to watch and learn from, I have self published a novel, I make pixel art that people enjoy to look at on Devainart and I have made a Comunity around shared vaules... But I never completed a game... I have 3 I am working on the first is the bigest and is almost half way done, the 2nd is just waiting on final art and playtesting, and the 3rd is not a Table top game but a video game made in RPG maker so still not on your level... Thanks for this it's really inspering to see some one younger then me do someone I am chuging away on.

As a former industry DS/DSi developer, I’m slightly offended. Those machines had 16-bit color (either 5 bits red, 5 bits green, 5 bits blue, 1 bit alpha; or 5 red, 6 green, 5 blue), or 8-bit paletted color. Also, 2000-4000 triangles on screen was the limit (at 60 FPS), with no more than 7 layers of overdraw. Roughly equivalent to an N64 (by design, Nintendo made its portable systems roughly equivalent to last-gen consoles so they could port & re-sell formerly console-only games). This has 1- to 4-bit textures and chunkiness that can’t be more than 100 tris. This looks like an early 90s DOS game or at best a SNES/GB game (SuperFX or the rare 3D rendered GB game), not a DS/DSi/N64 game.

Could I recommend a simple development cycle for indie games? 1: Concept and vision, maybe something like a design document. Figure out a time budget for the demo, make bullet lists; 2: Grey-box the core mechanics with coding the first version of the play systems (this will be rewritten a couple of times regardless of how well you think you do it, just code it rough and hacky); 3: Work out application systems(menu options, save/load, maybe multiplayer, maybe ad integration) - make these as self-contained and general as possible as they should be reusable for your other games down the line. Or maybe use community systems if available and more robust, but your own will sometimes be more efficient to work with; 4: Demo/Vertical Slice : you get to work on 2d art, models, animations and sound for one level. Play test. Rework the game systems if necessary. Get it to a reasonable amount of polish if it has the smallest chance to become a commercial project. Get it out there and step away; 5: Figure out if you want to push it further, you're at the stage when you can approximate what it takes to finish the full game. Don't be afraid to completely re-think it or scrap it. What you coded and even some of the assets should be useful for a next game project. If it still seems promising, go to step 6. 6: Actual development starts here. You are most probably going to need to redo everything better - start with the design document and a time/resource estimate for the final game. You might be able to get some funding at this stage and pay for some of the development.

This looks nothing like a DS game, but the game development itself is interesting. Also nice animations! To make a DS style game, you need to make it a Dual Screen game (as that's the whole gimmick of the console) Also disable mipmapping... how many developers miss making the lighting and textures accurate to the time period of the style of the game is surprising to me.

That "I'm trying to make this box move, it's very difficult" reminds me of when I was making a game in Godot in my computer tech class (for fun) I let a friend tryout the game, and while they were playing it, I realized something was wrong with the enemy, but they appeared fine. So I had to explain to my friend "The enemy works, but it's not moving properly", when the enemy was very clearly able to move. The issue was that each enemy relied solely on a random number to move, and they all used their own RNG, causing them to all have the same movement.
