Update Oct-4-2023: the game now runs on modded DSi/3DS systems with twilight menu! Be sure to download the latest release (v1.0.3)!!! why was it not working, you ask? I was trying to make a DSi rumble. DSi's can't rumble. so it exploded the system. that has now been fixed. Enjoy!

I've tried playing both versions but when I seem to get to an ending, it just...stays on a black screen. on my 3DS it's just black screen at the end of the day. so I replayed it on my dsi, got the explosives, and got a cutscene before making one last batch. barely made it but then black screen.

@@Elixir_Alex yeah, apologies - this seems to be a bug. i'll try and fix it when I can! In the meantime you can get the ending by going to Start Game -> then holding SELECT, R, and tapping Story Mode. Then you can start a Custom Cook on Day 6 ("The Final Cook")!

Edit: Unfortunately I'm not seeing the "custom cook" option. it's just starting me on that last batch that I was already at before. and if I load it on melonds and try it, it just starts the first day. though since R and select are D and ' in that set up, it could be an issue of ghosting.

it actually feels like a low budget licensed game for the nintendo DS, down to the font and chibified characters. Congrats.

I spent quite a bit of time adding animated model support, as well as cleaning it up, adding documentation, etc. And I also spend several weeks cleaning up NFlib, so I'm super happy that it has also been useful! This is one of the most high-effort and time-period-accurate DS homebrew games I've ever seen. You managed to make this game FEEL like it could be a real licensed game.

This is great! I really love that it's a cooking mama clone since a lot of licensed games back then were either that or some form of cheap party games collection, so it's authentic. Also, I don't know if this would fit memory-wise, but if this were a full game, I'd imagine you would have different stages that vary in complexity as the game progresses. like you start out in the RV obviously, where you have one work station, then move on to the Superlab, and maybe then you get the Vamanos lab, where maybe the layout changes every time since it's always different houses you are cooking in. Oh, and I could see a bonus minigame where you play as Gus in the Los Polos Hermanos kitchen, cooking food, bringing the Cooking Mama inspiration full circle.

Your time is going to come. Keep on grinding and you'll end up with the recognition and subscribers you deserve. I can't believe the effort you went through here. You literally integrated local multiplayer into a fan game. That is just so wild to me.

The progression of labs on the show could also be used in this game as a sort of natural difficulty curve. The easy cooks are in the small, simple rv lab, then the harder cooks would be in the larger, more advanced lab, and finally the hardest levels are the ever changing and complex operations of the home labs

GREAT video. I am trying to get into DS development and it's been a pain ... not because of the code itself but gluing together all the community tools. I spent the other day trying to get devkit pro setup and some other DS tool chains (BlockDS etc). For what these people have in talent they lack in organization lol. I was able to get everything dockerized so that hopefully in the future normal people who just want to greenfield some homebrew can get right into it without sifting through a deluge of outdated GBAtemp posts etc. Not a fault of the community but, as you mentioned, a fault of the now mostly useless SEARCH ENGINES. A video like this is so important for moving things forward. And, well, OF COURSE an impressive feat as well ;) Great work!

agreed 100%. Thankfully the one thing that is fairly well organized are the docker containers. DevKitPro has a very nice docker image ready to roll. If you're using VSCode, the dev-containers feature is very handy for working with this - I have a dev container json config which spins up a DevKitArm development environment with LibNDS, Nitro-Engine & NightFoxLib. Feel free to use, it's in the .devcontainers section of the repo.

You could have used an old shovelware ds game cartridge and modify the files with a dsi/3ds/pc ds card reader and then glue on it a little image of the game on it so it looks more authentic

I seen this game as a satire of all the DS shovelware that came out, taking the piss out of something like Cooking Mama where you cook meth instead. It's a really cool effort, and honestly choosing to make a fan game out of a license right now when licensed games are dead is probably the best time to do it.

When I was about 8 and I decided to become a gamedev, my original idea was to make 3DS games (cuz that's what I had at the time, along woth the Wii). This is so interesting to see homebrew ds/3ds games ! I'm really not good at programming, and understanding which program can be used for what is very difficult to me, but one day, I will make the first video game I've ever imagined, that works on the 3DS
