I interviewed my favorite band! BIG BIG TRAIN Concert Report/Interview/Reaction to Love is the Light

Музыка

#bigbigtrain #loveisthelight #thelikesofus
In this special edition of #thedailydoug, I'm speaking with Nick D'Virgilio, Gregory Spawton, and Alberto Bravin of Big Big Train. I had the opportunity to chat briefly with them before their concert in New Jersey last weekend. Then, I'll give a concert report and share their new single, Love is the Light (which I already adore). I hope you enjoy! AND...I hope you share this band's music with all your friends! (Episode 742)

David's passing hit me hard. He was one of my favourite frontmen of modern progressive rock. He had just put out a great folk album with Judy Dyble who also died recently. To think that both of them are no longer with us is heartbreaking.

I wish that I could get more people interested in these guys. I've followed everything Nick's done & it led me to the Train. I had to bring someone completely oblivious to them so I didn't go alone. He was, thankfully, blown away. Once again, great to meet you, Doug. You'll remember me as an old friend of DT's John Petrucci 😊

Even though David is tragically no longer with us you can still feel his spirit in the music. It's great they carried on the band after David's loss and the departure of the other members Dave Gregory, Rachel Hall and Danny Manners who were outstanding musicians and performers. Wonderful band, a stunning album, got the same feel about listening to this when I first heard the brilliant An Hour Before It's Dark by Marillion. Superb modern Prog, one reviewer said it was almost Genesis from 1973 got back together in 2024 and made a new record. Alberto has done David proud.

Thank goodness - I was concerned that it had been blocked. The new album THE LIKES OF US is one of their best - I’m so pleased as they have had many terrible setbacks. They are a skilled band of multi-instrumentalists and great singers and Greg discovered that Alberto also composes and fits right into the ethos of the band! What I think is terrific is that because there is talent in depth that space is made for all lead instruments to solo. I love this Wonderful band!! I saw Alberto’s official debut and also Cadogan Hall and they confirmed how brilliant they were live. And unlike many bands they will come out after the show and mingle! Thanks Doug - this episode made me quite emotional. Check out some of their live stuff on KZread.

Such a wonderful experience. BBT was a band I only discovered a few years ago, so to be able to have them here in the States and play so amazingly was such a treat! Alberto brings so much energy to the stage and will definitely make his mark on this band with all due deference to the memory of the late great David Longdon. Everyone in the band expressed such joy on stage and it was definitely contagious! Long live Big Big Train! 🚂

Dear Doug! I just watched your interview with bbt and I so appreciate your heart-felt commentary. I’m glad to hear that they’re now your favorite band. They are mine too! I live near Bloomington, IN and so I was lucky enough to only have a 2.5 hour drive up to Fort Wayne where I saw them at Sweetwater - what a treat. I met the band afterwards and yes, they are such warm and friendly people. I only discovered bbt a half year ago through a friend who’s had dealings with Sweetwater music. I quickly followed the rabbit hole I’d found and, quite without realizing it, became a fanboy. I’ve never had this happen to me before - I’d found my tribe. I went through years of bbt in a just a few weeks including the heart-wrenching sadness of David’s accident - such a staggering loss. I think that made the music all that much more sweet and rich for me. (I will say here, though, that Alberto is pretty amazing too and I’m impressed with how he’s been able to take over the reins.) I first watched your video reaction to London Plane, and then your tribute to David. That was such a beautiful tribute, and I thank you. I too want people to know their music. I try to spread the word as I can. My wife thinks I’m in a cult, lol. Maybe I am - the cult of love and light. I sure hope they’re able to make it back to the US for another tour soon, and I hope to see you there and say hello. Sincerely, Curtis

Pretty sure they stayed after the show and talked and took pictures with everyone who wanted to. I also bought plenty of merch to help them come back, would love to hear more of the outstanding new album live. Of course it's all bittersweet since I had tickets to see them in 2020.

Not only are they accomplished musicians, they can really rock the house live! And you are right, they are great humans and it shows in their music. I've got everything they have put out and the new album is one of the best. An absolutely beautiful album.

I’m so glad you’re doing this Doug. I didn’t discover the band until late on, 2020 or so. As soon as I heard them I knew I had found something special. David Longdon’s passing hit me harder than I would’ve expected, and he will be greatly missed. I’m thrilled that they chose to continue with Alberto, who has slotted in so well and does justice to the back catalogue. The new album gives me hope for the future of the band and I agree with you that more people need to know about this fabulous group of very talented musicians.

I found Big Big Train just a few months before David’s passing. I was interested, because I knew of Nick D’Virgilio from Spock’s Beard. I was so saddened by learning of David’s death, that I stopped listening and then forgot about them. Then at the beginning of this year, I came across a live studio recording of Stone & Steel on KZread. So good, that I am reconnected with the band all over again. David was SO good! Yes, it did make me sad all over again, but then I realized that BBT did NOT throw in the towel. I was excited to hear the new vocalist, Alberto has joined the band! He pulled them back together and they are very good with him!!! His sound is not David, but is every bit as good!!! Then I found out they were actually coming to Buffalo, NY!!! Scooped up a ticket and I am back on that ‘Train’!!! Their sound IS SO FAT and COMPLEX, it makes me remember why I have enjoyed prog rock for almost 50 years! Can’t wait to see them live again! Thanks for the interview Dr. Doug!!! Great band!!!

I just got my copy of B.B.T.'s CD "The Likes Of Us" last week. I've only been able to give it a couple of casual plays. Life does keep one hopping. Nonetheless it is a very enjoyable record/CD. The is unmistakable fingerprints of Nick D. all over it, but in a good way. Nick is after all an outstanding musician and song writer. I first caught on to Big Big Train some eight or nine years ago when I was listening to Aural Moon & Delicious Agony, internet radio stations. Been a fan ever since. Another nice score Doug. Keep up the good work. I thoroughly enjoy your channel.

Was at the Buffalo show on Monday night, incredible show. The sound was excellent the mix was perfect with the horn section. I never thought that I would get a chance to see them. The venue was just recently reopened, and they didn't have the seating right. I was supposed to sit in the mezzanine but there wasn't even one. Nick commented that he liked the place as people were finding all kinds of strange places to watch music from. Great audience and great band.

Hey Doug, great interview! I’ve been loving The Likes of Us so far. I hope you do an episode in the future on the song Deep Stone Lullaby from Destiny 2. It is probably one of the most beautiful songs I have heard in a game, especially how it works with effecting the mood of the area it plays in (I suggest you watch a video of someone playing through it, with the best one I could find is the video “the moment I fell in love with the Deep Stone Crypt raid” by Aztecross; you really only get half the weight of it by just listening to it).

Wow. What a great sit down chat. Maybe when you feel like a stroll back in time; give a listen to Run of the Mill, Judas Priest. It’s got a fairly long, I guess, instrumental bridge section that builds to a very intense, emotional ending. The song is from their debut album Rocka Rolla, 1974.
