Big Big Train are one of the best kept secrets of modern prog. They have a uniquely "British" sound despite having a very cosmopolitan line-up. Great band especially the later work with the amazing vocals of Dave Longden (he's the flautist too). Great song choice.

Greg Spawton of Big Big Train says this about his song London Plane. "I have written a few songs with a London theme in recent years so I began to think how a song about a tree named after the city might work. I decided that I would use a single tree as a ‘witness’ to the history of London over the last few hundred years."

A lot of BBT songs are story songs inspired by historical subjects. One of their best songs is East Coast Racer about the fastest steam train ever built and especially about the men who built and ran them. Actually recently the fans of the band, called Passengers, helped out by raising money for a proper grave monument for one of the train drivers on that historic speed record ride.

Cool reaction. Big Big Train's drummer since around 2009 is Nick D'Virgilio (NDV). NDV was the original drummer for Spock's Beard and their 2nd lead singer after Neal Morse left. NDV has a great voice, but I believe he only drums in Big Big Train. I know your lives are very busy, but when you have more time please hit any of the songs I emailed: Neal Morse Band, Spock's Beard, Transatlantic, Flying Colors, Sons of Apollo. Thank you and keep rockin'!!! --Dennis

Absolutely gorgeous song. The uptempo part, to me, represented the modern world encroaching on the pastoral. “Time and tide wait for no man” As a huge Spock’s Beard fan, I love Nick D’Virgilo’s drumming with BBT. He sang lead vocals when Neal Morse left Spock’s Beard. My two favorite songs from the second era of SB are Ghosts of Autumn and A Perfect Day. Recommend Walking on the Wind or The Doorway from the NealMorse era. Also check out TransAtlantic (the opening Overture to The Whirlwind is sublime).

Prog has gotten a second life since the early 2000´s and is still going strong. The 70s were great, the 80s and 90s slacked (though they were great where metal is concerned) and now it´s back in full glory. There are countless of amazing prog bands in all genres nowadays even rivalling the 70s to an extent. Yes, much of it is build on the music of the 70s, but how could it not be?

Discovering music IS awesome, so thank you for this video! I've been into this band for a while, so seeing your reactions to a treasured song was great, even brought tears to my eyes. BBT has been around since the beginning of the 90s- A lot of great music to devour, but a bit different since 2009 when David Longdon (the guy you heard in this song) became vocalist and songwriter. Since then, I've felt BBT is a lot like watching the Discovery Channel accompanied by great music (and I, like a big history nerd loved the Discovery Channel!) since they have a lot of songs about actual, real world historical events. If you delve any deeper, as I suspect you might, be sure to check out Brave Captain, about a WWI fighter pilot. Made me cry when I saw them live. Also Last Train is very poignant... a beautiful song about something as mundane as the life of a train station master! Victorian Brickwork is another gem.. Really, just start with The Underfall Yard from 2009 and move forward from there. If you loved this song about a tree in London, you're in for a treat

You need to react to BBT's theunderfall yard. One of the best tracks considering all their albums.

Thanks for reacting to BBT! Pretty sweet huh? They are without a doubt one of the top newer generation of progressive bands on the scene today. I had plans to see them twice in 2020 here in the USA. Unfortunately the virus had other plans for 2020 as we all know. They have never toured the US. Let's hope they can someday. I would like to recommend their song Uncle Jack from English Electric 1. kzread.info/dash/bejne/X6RhqK-TmdCsmbA.html or Judas Unrepentant kzread.info/dash/bejne/oJOdj9eqd7Hgl7g.html

Please revisit this band EAST COAST RACER their masterpiece - UNDERFALL YARD recently remastered encapsulates them best. New album out now COMMON GROUND (not their best as 3 members left and I think if it as a transitional album)

If your in the mood for an eighties instrumental co written by Jan Hammer and Tony Hymas, take a listen to "You Know We Know" by Jeff Beck on his 1985 album Flash.

I know a couple of Big,Big Train songs, but never heard the similarity in singing to Peter Gabriel as in this song. It's nice, but never made it to my personal 1. league. You mentioned several bands, I want to add another: have you ever heard of Flower Kings from Sweden ... another great prog band

I'd not say it's neo prog. It's quite the opposite, it's vintage prog.
