Fun fact: John Mayer tried (and failed) to be a stand up comedian one time
What he is saying is, use the craft to elevate your creativity. But do not let the “rules/theory” confine you.

He's saying that it's important to know the information on how it all works theoretically, but that information should be used to express those moments of inspiration as accurately as possible in terms of translating feeling to sound. Less about being confined to rules and more about not doing something for the sake of following the rules. Be intentional in what you're trying to get out.

John's really good at making songs, but kinda crap at making sentences lol
This is the best explanation on why you need to know music theory.
I watched the whole talk and I thought it was quite good, he had more to say about the idea of info vs inspiration, which was quite appropriate and relatable for Berklee students who were absorbing tons of knowledge from school. This comment section is hating for no reason tho

Mayer is a very polarizing person. You either love him, or you hate him.
Linking songwriting knowledge to emotion.
I forgot that he was actually highly intelligent and a great teacher.
Realizing there’s more to melody then just singing the changes was a big eye opener for me tbh

They're probably talking about when people write simple melodies that just follow the chord changes and don't do much else.
@Viper-dz2kw

@@Suge.senseii I think I meant something along the lines of you can be singing the changes but that doesn’t make it a coherent melody, some of the best melodies are just one phrase sung over and over as the chords change around it
I think that in the process of getting "better", we forgot the "why" or our reason/motive for wanting to start writing songs in the first place. We traded "heart" and "self-expression" for craft and fell into the trap of the mundane world. We became so obsessed with craft and with getting results, that we slowly lost our bond/connection to the "heart" and "self-expression" without even realising it. And I think this is sad, because I bet most of us started writing songs in the first place, because we just wanted to express ourselves. Yeah, I guess that's it. That's the reason most of us wanted to start writing songs in the first place. Yeah, I hope this helps someone out there. Make sure to remember the reason that made you want to start writing songs in the first place.
God damn legend.

That's what Jacob Collier does, he creates music from a very logical and mathematic standpoint. Amazing musician but imo he lacks a lot of natural feel and emotion in his songwriting.

I am pretty cerebral in my process too. Especially the lyrics. I hope my stuff doesn't lack emotion. 😩 How do you know if something lacks emotion? It just doesn't move people, or...?
@TheRageCommenter

@@LucaAnamaria hard to describe. It’s just about the “feel”. That’s why blues music is deceivingly difficult to play. It’s mostly emotion and very little theory/math based (hence why blues scales are relatively simple scales). Hard to describe in words but I think the biggest thing I’ve noticed that qualifies a song as having emotion and feeling is if it imperfectly fits the time signature. Check out Mayer’s “Out of My Mind” from Live in LA concert if you wanna see what I mean. Lots of little delays and hanging notes.

His main point is that songwriters need to learn how to turn information I.e - music theory, songwriting tools, what you learn form other songs etc, into inspiration, as in jumping off points for our own creative work. I guess a very basic way to put it would be, rip off a song but make it your own. However he is really saying, the more knowledge you have, the more fuel you have to keep creativity burning 🔥
What he sung was fire tho
For all of my dear beautiful friends in the comments, I thank you for following your impulse to connect And share what about this moved you to take action and express. You are so loved and appreciated for your own unique perseption .🌺🌸🌹🌷xoxo

what he is saying is dont sing the chord progressions. the melody comes first then the chord progression. dont let the progression move the melody.

Not really lol plenty of great song where the chord progression inspired the melody. And thats what his point is. Be inspired. Dont be methodical as in "this fits here, this fits there". Let it come naturally.
