Nick D'Virgilio has been a musician since the age of five. His father got sick of him hitting the pots and pans and brought home a set of 1965 blue sparkle Ludwig drums and he never looked back. The music bug had taken hold and was not going to let go.
Nick was a self-taught musician until he attended the Dick Grove School of Music in Los Angeles, California at the age of 17. From that point forward, Nick's professional career has been in full swing.
In 1994, Nick met the late Kevin Gilbert (Toy Matinee, Giraffe) and from that chance meeting at a ski resort nightclub, his career took off to the next level. Nick joined the UK pop group, Tears For Fears, in 1995 and played with them until 2008. In 1996, Nick replaced Phil Collins in Genesis and recorded on the album Calling All Stations. Nick has also played and recorded for such artists as Peter Gabriel, Sheryl Crow, Mike Keneally, Eric Burden and the Animals, and many others.
Founded in the early 1990s, Nick's original band, Spock's Beard, was simultaneously climbing the ranks in the Prog-Rock world. During his 20 years with Spock's Beard, Nick was part of ten studio releases, live DVDs, and many tours of the United States and Europe. Later in his tenure with Spock's Beard, Nick also took over the role of lead singer as well as holding the drum chair for studio recordings.
Building on the exposure and the opportunities that arose from these recording and touring credits, Nick became a busy teacher and clinician for Paiste Cymbals, Alesis, Sonic Reality, IK Multimedia, Meinl Cymbals and Percussion, Mapex Drums, Vic Firth Drumsticks, and Aquarian Drumheads. He performed and taught master classes at drum festivals, music schools, and music conventions all over the world.
In 2010, Nick joined the company Cirque Du Soleil. He was part of their touring show, TOTEM, for 4-1/2 years as drummer, lead singer, and assistant bandleader.
Nick joined Sweetwater Sound in August 2014, where he creates how-to content, demonstration videos, and product reviews. He also teaches music and pro audio classes and serves as the Sweetwater Studios' first-call session drummer.

Nick, you are awesome. Between you ( whom I’ve been following for years) and Gavin Harrison, my drumming love and enjoyment never cease. You, Harrison, Vinnie, Weckl, Carter Beauford, Simon Phillips, Igoe, Wackerman, Benny Grebb to name a few, still gives me hope to go back to the drumchair again. My respects from Puerto Rico.

One of the most beautiful and inspiring things I’ve heard since I experienced Kansas for the first time. Not just singing and playing! I can do that (not very good at either) But the degree of difficulty of the rhythms and the vocals is astonishing and beautiful. God has certainly given you a lion’s share of talent, and I’m sure, the tenacity to practice your way to this level. Nothing but praise for this great prodigy.

He definitely has one of the greatest jobs a drummer can have in this world. Working at a large music company like Sweetwater, and being a salesman and spokesman for both drum companies and the distributor of those drums Sweetwater. Sweetwater has actually had a great and positive impact on the city of Fort Wayne Indiana. They carry just about every instrument, and sound eqpt for bands and recording studios, with some of the nicest personal people to help you with your purchase. I don't work for Sweetwater, I've just been surprised how nice the purchasing experience is with that company. They really do appreciate your business. You don't see that too often in this day and age for any kind of retail company.
This is outstanding.

It is funny how we pigeon-hole people so easily. I only knew Nick as a spokesman for Sweetwater, which he does very well. But, he does look and sound like a stereotypical salesman in that role. To see him here playing and singing at a very high level is almost shocking! Great work, Nick, and I'm glad to learn there is a substantial and meaningful book under that book cover.

As a drummer mysel, a question I always ask myself is, 'If I was given that piece of music (without drums), what would I come up with?'. Unsurprisingly (to me at least) it's never as good as the pro's. Practice can replicate, but inventiveness is a whole different league. This song is a great example of that. And he sings at the same time!! 😮😊
First time, in a long time, I've seen a pro drummer with a mix of cymbal brands.
A few years ago a brilliant guitarist , whom I still play with and love doing so , had encouraged and expected my vocal participation in providing harmony to vocal parts in his songs. This was instead of hiring specific backing singers, he felt that all the other members of the group should sing along to his lyrics just like himself was then :both playing guitar and lead guitar while singing all lead vocals at our gigs. Having already been a fan of Nick d'virgilio and his work in Spock's beard from earliest to later records, starting with me being a fan of his drumming firstly but then a fan of his singing after just like my journey with being a fan of Phil Collins before, I decided I would atleast try. I found it really strengthened my timing as a drummer as it made me more sensitive to a singers or melodic voice players approach to rhythm over a pulse, us drummers can divide time too strictly and literally but melodic voices can ebb and flow around the pulse without breaking it nor sounding overly anchored to it. So watching this clip, after gladly including backing vocals to my drumming as another attribute to offer bands that hire me today , inspired precisely and foremost by Nick and his life's work on records no less, I can say that when I read comments about how difficult it must be for Nick or anyone to play how they play while also singing? I say forget the singing! The drum parts are already difficult haha! Nick plays wonderfully and perfectly here! The singing on top is his additional talent and skill he had mentally figured out himself because of his musical mind and relationship with music. Any new drummer watching this clip or newly introduced to Nick I suggest: don't burden yourself with thinking you've to sing aswell as play to be a fan of Nick. Study the drums first and incorporate singing when natural. For drummers who don't sing as well as they drum. I hadn't done this until I was tasked by a band leader to do so to keep the gig. I'm really glad I did and it is some benifit but if it's not you don't think you have to! Nick is a great singer obviously and so it was natural for him to include this to his skillset, he also plays guitar really well btw. If though you only play the drums and struggle with other voices in music then stick with the drums! The other side of the coin is that drummers are equally important. To proove this point, even Nick and Phil(Collins) have a specialised drummer for their tours ! A long winded but well intentioned contributing point from a random KZread viewer
Brilliant playing and such wise musical choices to support the arrangement. Nick made that four piece kit sound much bigger than it is.
