I HAVE STANDARDS PEOPLE!

Hey everyone wrapping up some big projects separate from KZread right now. Should be all done and back in the studio in a couple weeks. But I had to take some time before work to address this issue about standards.
Here is a link to the crazy article:

    When I was a kid, maybe 14 or 15 years old, I learned to rappel out of a tree on 1/4" hemp rope reading a book by Gaston Rébuffat taken out of the public library for weeks on end. Fortunately I was probably only 10 feet up and the rope never broke. Body abseil hurts.

    Lol ... when I was 8 I made my first "zip line" out of some random poly cord climbed a tree to fix the top anchor and bottom anchor was another tree. Well when I tried that bad boy out I clipped a key chain carabiner to my belt loop on my pants and mad it about 10 feet before the inevitable struck lol

    @@TheOKayStonemaster hahahaha, I was probably 10-12 years old and remember building a zipline in my front yard between 2 trees. I used the ATV to tension and wrapped it around the tree. just tied a fuck ton of half hitches, like ya- good enough. It worked. I dont remember what kind of rope it was, but it held and it was good fun!

    Ive seen people rappel off of water towers with extension chords about 100 ft from the crag where I live. Always wondered if they succeeded ha!

    Vintage climbing photos showed us that back in the day people used hawserlaid rope. In my country/area 50m of 12 mm nylon hawser is about half the price of my 50m Tendon dynamic rope (I suspect it's afmy surplus)/a third of other popular brand, honestly I might be tempted to use the hawserlaid. But, I know that nylon is the material used to make kernmantle, so I won't entertain the thought of using rope made of another materials.

    So it’s static which I guess is not terrible for top rope but that combined with around a 500lb breaking load…

    I haven't even started climbing (yet) but damn it this is just common sense to me. If I can't, or don't want to, afford proper equipment to save my life, I won't go climbing.

    Hey, if you want an epic fail (or win) look up the Hallett Peak rock slide. A team of boulderers broke...a mountain.

  • @Steven-ro6os

    @Steven-ro6os

    ???? It was not caused by boulderers. That's not possible, at all. Bouldering cannot cause a mountain to slide like that. The Hallet Peak slide is thought to have been caused by seismic activity.

    @@Steven-ro6os While scrambling a boulder field, I've been on some pretty big rocks and it felt semi stable, then I made one wrong step and I shit you not, a 15ft radius around me started sliding

    @@roo9569 What you're saying actually makes sense, though, as opposed to OP. Big, loose blocks obviously exist in the mountains. Bouldering doesn't cause peaks to slide like the Hallet. Sure, you can cause some relatively minor rockfall, but the weight of a human does not have the potential to break the entire mountain like that.
