To be fair, he came in with someone else's camera crew. The other guy has his own decently popular climbing channel, and the premise is that the old man is his dad or uncle or something.

The oldest climber I ever climbed with was a 80 year old woman from the British mountaineering club - the mid 1990s. She climbed harder than me, was fearless, and pushed my limits as a second when she climbed past the length of the belay rope, requiring addition of every sling, and line I had within reach in my kit. On a route that was definitely not suited to both of us off the ground. Then after my own heart, she down climbed to her previous clip point 35m below her top out, before abseiling off. This was adventure climbing, and she had chosen a route none have repeated to this day.

When the instructor encourages Magnus onto the 8b+ we can all understand what he’s about - he knows he has a world class climber on belay and wants to enjoy the spectacle of a world class climber on-sighting the hardest moves. I know this wall. 8b+ on this short wall is super bouldery, with tough clips.

It also shows that the human brain isn't that easy to fool. You simply recognize differences when you see an actually aged man and a young dude who wears make-up and afalse hair / beard... and who is also mastering every damn wall like a pro. ;) And thanks for creating a good and funny German accent... Also he's positive all the way through, while still 110% professional eg. testing your finger strenght, rope skills and doesn't get sold on "my arms are weak" BS ;-). Heck, I think he could teach me climbing. And I'm scared of hights. And I really likes how he teases you at about minute 20, that the Spanish guy might actually be better than you - not sure if he realized at that moment - but still he's still you best friend while also your drill instructor. Also your actor skills might match your climb abilities.

I wondered if I should say something, because from my POV this was really risky. But when he started climbing I felt like a fool. Yes he wasn't the fastest but oh man that old man made the 6a i really struggled with before look easy. When we both reached the top we had a talk: - Turns out he was 82 years old and came from Saxon Switzerland. He had been climbing for nearly 60 years. Kieran was a great sport, and you could tell he knew something was up, esp when he offered the 7c. Great video Magnus - I love these.

On the rewatch of this, knowing Kieran was aware from THE BEGINNING, that makes Kieran's jokes and laughter after 19:00 SO much funnier. He was trying so hard to play along but at that point he just couldn't anymore and he's like wheezing with laughter xD Made me laugh so much harder on the rewatch

Wow, this video made me laugh out loud. They joy of the instructor and his positive attitude and how calm he was on the massive falls was super cool to watch. I'm myself a (gym-) climber for years and most of the climbers and instructors I met were super supportive and friendly - it's a great community. It's wonderful to see how much fun the instructor had and that he played along so well. The German words were funny to hear and actually pretty good (I'm myself German). Keep these videos coming. There are some pretty nice climbing gyms in Munich ;-)

He knew immediately. Neck is super smooth for 73yo. Hands have no wrinkles at all. Movement is limber and voice is a young man’s voice. Young kid knew right away
