not to be "that guy" but magnus is not one of the best climbers in the world. he himself would readily admit that, i'm fairly certain. don't get me wrong. he's stronger than i could ever dream of being, and he's definitely in the top 99th percentile.... but when you are talking about millions (over ~25 million according to some estimates?) of climbers worldwide, being in the top 99th percentile, or even 99.9th percentile, doesn't make you one of the best. i mean just think about how many olympic climbers alone there are. and then you factor in how some of the strongest climbers to have ever lived aren't even competing these days... jimmy webb, daniel woods, nalle, shawn, etc... edit: LMAO i seem to have really upset all the salty gymbros who think they know everything because they watched a few youtube videos and started bouldering 3 months ago and just climbed their first v3. it's ok you guys can keep telling me why i'm wrong. i know you are wrong. and you know what's hilarious? i bet even magnus knows you are all wrong. and it wouldn't be out of a false sense of humility, it's because i'm sure even magnus himself knows just how good people are these days. there are people NONE OF YOU HAVE EVEN HEARD OF who are stronger climbers than magnus. and if you disagree with me, perhaps you should just take a minute and educate yourself on the world of climbing. it's a lot bigger than magnus' youtube channel.

@@tomriddle2257 I don't know why you'd think I was talking about age but I guess I can clarify if it was confusing. I meant that Magnus retired from competition climbing 6 years ago, and hasn't really been focusing on hard climbing since then. Sure he does a lot of general climbing content, but he doesn't really push himself by projecting really hard routes/boulders. Simultaneously he also does a lot of other wierd fitness stuff that should be to the detriment of his climbing ability. On the other hand, Adam has climbed more than 20 V15 or harder boulders and has topped more 9b+ routes then any other climber in history, three of them in the last few years and the last one just a few months ago. So he is obviously at the absolute peak of human climbing ability. Given all that, the fact that Magnus can still climb at a comparable level and even outperform Adam on some problems is astounding. Hope that clears it up.

This is an amazing segment! The old footage of Ben and Jerry is from the "The Real Thing", a revolutionary video that completely flipped the script of what a climbing film looked and sounded like. It was the first climbing film that showed us the personalities of the climbers and gave a glimpse into their lifestyles . That coupled with a techno/house club music soundtrack made it look and sound like nothing that had been available before. It was not just another "RAD" action film, it was relatable to a new generation of climbers and set the tone for many films that followed.

A bit emotional watching this one. Last video I watched was your other Sheffield video and at the time I mentioned we were close by as my mum was in hospital in Yorkshire. Unfortunately she passed away on the 10th of February. She was really proud of my daughter who has just turned 7 and started climbing. She has been climbing a few months now and we usually watch your videos and Adam's videos together. We went climbing tonight in the northeast of the UK and she spent a lot of time talking about her Nanna. It's been a really emotional month but climbing helps her focus and talking helps her process the emotions. Watching videos together during mums illness was a big help for us both and gave us a lot of support. If you come back to the UK it would be brilliant if she could meet you both. Ondra is a new generation climber. He's born with gyms, training tools, training programs and some milestones to achieve or to beat. In former times when Moon, Moffatt or Güllich climbed, there was nothing. They had to create everything. Moon and Moffatt built the Fondry in Sheffield, Güllich the campus board and they tried new routines without any idea of what they will lead us. Even the spirit was different: back in the 80s it wasn't well accepted to "work" a route: to work a move from the point you fell. When you fell, you had to start again from the ground. It's not to depreciate Adam Ondra who is a monster and the best climber of the world. But you can't compare climbers from different times. Climbers like Moffat, Moon, Güllich, Edlinger are just pioneers.

That's beside more money the main reason climbers nowadays become stronger than ever before. I know some guys that took climbing courses but climbed only V on the UIAA scale. When I started climbing I became decent fast because I went climbing with people who are way better at climbing than I am. With pros it's the same you can't improve if there are no people around your level or stronger around you. That's the reason there are training centers for the best in most sports and countries.

Wow Magnus. This is the best video so far this year. I think seeing the school house and its small enclosure for the climbing boards made it very approachable. I could really see myself going through the motions like you and everyone were. This is one of very few videos where I was really "biting my nails!" The other videos in the big gyms can be a bit overwhelming due to their size and amount of people and I didn't get the same level of anticipation from those videos that this video brought! I hope you make more videos visiting older climbers and the places they trained in. It was good seeing some history, but unlike a museum where you can't touch anything, you can still climb and actively participate, reliving the past. Thanks.
