    The Gaston is named after Gaston Rèbuffat. He displayed the technique for climbing off widths in the book ‘On Rock and Snow’. The position was described as pulling on either side of the off width like pulling elevator doors open. So Magnus was pretty much on point with his guess. It was a guy named Gaston.

    In France, my kids, who are in junior high school and high school, do climbing as part of their allocated sport hours. It's one of the couple of disciplines they will do throughout the year. This was definitively not the case when I was a kid. Not sure how widespread it is but it is obvious that pretty much every school sport hall has a climbing wall now.

    I think it's more complicated than that, maybe France has a good background when it comes to climning, but for me those who have the chance to experience it from a young age, it's not specifically from school. For a good part, yes we have the chance to practice climbing during our school years (for those who have it for the longest time it is during college / lycée which I think is equivalent to secondary school, but even this long was rare a few years ago). But unfortunatley in a way those years will make a lot of people afraid of it: it's an obligation, it's for the grades, teachers most often do not really like it and are not interested by this sport. For example I had it as part of my allocated sport hours only from when I was like 15 to 17-18, and I know that most of my friendss didn't really liked it / were afraid of it. So we do not have the chance to practice it from a young age as I see it / experienced it during my scholarity. Maybe it's just that this sport is really becoming more and more populair in France since a few years, and we have some good climbing / bouldering gyms. But for the few years that I practiced it during my scholarity, it was far from being one of the most popular sports (even most for bouldering which I never saw during those years). When it comes to extracurricular activities, maybe we have more opportunities than others, I couldn't tell. But even then, you need to get the chance to try it and have people push you toward this sport.

    @@elie8194 Depends on the Gyms. Arkose and Climb-Up (And by extension MROC in Lyon) are present on "Social Boulder", you can see the Boulders and routes on it, and they try to display the difficulty a bit more precisely than just colors, even if not always accurate and not always put into "regular" grades. Climbing district in Paris has QR-codes below each boulder that leads to youtube videos of the betas. So, it looks like climbing gyms are trying more and more to develop their 'connected' side.

    In terms of boulders, I think there are others gyms that have more problems. Climb-Up Aubervilliers has about 16~18 boulders per color, with 7 colors. The Arkose Nation Gym has 24+ boulders of each color with 6 colors. Where Climb-Up Aubervilliers really shines, it's with the rope-climbing, with the highest count of all gyms in Paris (I think) It is with both together, that it becomes the biggest gym.

    Thanks for this video ! I climb at « climb up » since the beginning of my journey in Climbing. It’s very reassuring to see that even you, can struggle on lower grades boulder. I never climbed in a gym where we can see the actual grades of the boulder, and I always thought that climbing purple/red boulders was very weak compare to boulders that you do in others countries. With this video I finally can see your thoughts on French boulders. Thank you for that !

    So much to take from this video ... first boulder and the confusion from Magnus on how to start, brings back memories of Marte first learning. Then the discussion on Magnus climbing a building ... What did Marte say about free climbing? ... oh yea, let's ignore that! Next was there were routes that Anton would have liked especially the "attempt number50". The 'do it till you get it' mindset is absolutely a consistent theme throughout Anton's videos. Lastly, I got the vibes that Magnus actually enjoyed the challenges he came up against in this video. I really enjoyed this video, thanks Magnus 😊

    Great video but i also have to admit it is so reassuring to hear people say they grade hard! I'd really felt like I was terrible because of everyone on the internet getting to V4s and 6bs in months, even a couple sessions, while the setters at my gym (same gym different location) were saying that the blues were only 5a-c (V2) and purples 5c-6b (V3-4s)! Edit - oh the purple one was scary - I've heard that this chain of gyms is also known for injuries and i couldn't help but cringe because I'll personally be top-roping one-legged for the next three months because of a dual tex blue foothold. But it was so cool to see the send!

    yeah gyms around the world really inflate the grade. The purple at climb up are around V3 ou 6A for sure, the reds around 6B+/6C with maybe the hardest ones at 7A

  • @Ptitviaud1337

    @Ptitviaud1337

    @@LeonxLeon I've seen such differences in between gyms that sometimes things feel off by a full number. Like 7A's that would probably be 6A in font. Also, as you get toward the "end of the scale" of one gym, it generally becomes more and more consistent with outdoor, because such boulders are, in proportion, climbed more by outdoor climbers that would be confused by such a grade inflation. In the end, i've noticed that beginning at 7A+, boulders starts to get increasingly harder than the previous grades, probably so that indoor climbers can "tick" the 7x grade when they come here. It's actually even worse for routes !

  • @leodarkk

    Really a setter at Climb up told you that? That's surprising. Clearly 5a is yellow, far from blue. Green up to 5c, and maybe blue 5c+ to 6a+ and more often 6a+ than 5c+. Of course a setter should know better than I do, so idk.
