I FOUND MY PERFECT PRONE FOIL BOARD (First rides on the Portal Trans Medium 17)

What's up everyone,
In this entry I am stoked to say that after 11 months and 5 boards later I have found my perfect prone foil board. I got my Portal Trans Medium 17 about a week and a half ago literally a week after getting my skipper by Appletree. After my first session on the Portal I realized that it is doing everything that I want to do. Amazing and predictable pop up, great pump and able to carve turns. With that said through any other trail and error I realized that the skipper is just not for me. Construction, paddling where a definite pro but for what I want to do it just was not working. Also in this entry I decided to film it in my garage instead of speaking right after a session. I really like the idea of being able to physically hold what I am talking about to better explain my experience. The only downside is that in order to get better light I have to leave the door open which then allows outside sounds in. So please feel free to let me know what you think of this new potential format and if the outside sound is too distracting I will resolve it. Anyway I hope you're all having a great day and getting on foil.

Good interesting to have your point on view on every board you can get your hand on. Ive seen a video about amos shape comparaison i found that very interesting. Shimming base plate on the foil is pretty anoying you have always the doubt you didnt find the perfect shimming , i like more plug and play board and gear. Sunova casey might be interesting for winging but it a bit narrow for a beginner i ithink, it’s should be a perfect lightwind innerlake weapon tho. Yewww 👌

Nice video. What is the length and depth of the Portal Trans Medium 17 board? I haven't shimmed my mast ever but feel like I need to (it's an Armstrong 4'0" which has some rocker to it). What material do you use to shim your mast and do you make the shim yourself? Thx!

Hey. The Portal is 4’5 and a little thicker then 3 thick. As far as the shim it’s a 1 degree by PPC

any chance you can check with a flat rule if the nose of the appletree board is sagging? looks like the nose is dipping at @2:10. Someone once said that people always rave about their new boards primarily because they are stiff and their old board is tired, and then confuse this feeling with any kind of design stuff. I would be interested in you trying a fresh appletree back to back, but that is maybe a cynical take... Also you weren't that clear on your shimming of the appletree. Did you shim it in the end? I find with the progression that I needed to shim the mast 2mm at the back in order to get the pump effective, and this was on a Gong and an Appletree. The gong has a dead flat deck, so I know it isn't any rocker issues. The Appletree is the same as yours with the skipper nose. The Portal looks to have more rocker than the Appletree?

Hey Matt, So that Appletree is about 2 weeks old compared to the Portal. So it is actually two brand new boards side to side, back to back. Shim wise I did a 1 degree shim thicker part towards the tail. It leveled out the board a bit and I think helped a lot or at least for what I like the feel of. I have no need to shim the portal. It has all the feels that I am looking for with no adjustments.

@@skatehills Again I think not really depends on what your foiling is. I really like the benefits of what the portal design does. But, as I said the Appletree is way easier and stable to paddle into waves with because of the width of the nose.

Planning on giving that another go. Last time I tried I didn’t know how to pump so maybe once this swell slows down. It’s been waves just about everyday
