I've been on the hunt for a big front wing for light wind winging, dockstarting and learning to downwind. I think I found it.
This foil does it all for me when conditions are less than ideal
I've never dock started before and took the opportunity to get out and try it as soon as I got this foil. Josh and I had a blast on our first dock start session. If you don't have dockstarting as a part of your foiling life - I highly recommend it. It's something you can share with people and enjoy together rather than on your own like so much of foiling can be.
The axis 1300PNG might be the best all around foil for making fun of marginal conditions. It can just do more things better than the 1150 and 1310. But until I can get my hands on the 1310 I can't say for sure.
Full setup we ran was the amos spitfire on the standard red fuse with the 400p tail and the 82cm mast.
All drone footage is courteous of Blurr Drone on Instagram

    Very much in agreeance with the phrase 'dock starting is hard'. Even when you think you've got it, like I'll have 10 textbook dockstarts in a row, then come back 2 days later, nope. Can't dock start to save myself.

    Mine is in the mail. Just finished my first session with the 1050 HPS and I was blown away by the glide compared to my Naish 1800 HA. But it was more difficult to get up in 12 knot light wind with me at 100kg. Hoping the 1300 will be the light wind answer.

    Yes the 1300 is great for light wind winging with 2 foot or less chop and swell. Great downwind glide, pumpability, control, and enough speed. Easy to get up as long as the light wind is steady. Once the wind picks up or it gets choppy, it’s time to move to the 1050 which is such a stable foil in the chop and goes upwind much better. 1050 is the perfect foil for lower intermediate big guys in 14knots plus.

  • @martinomovies

    @martinomovies

    Жыл бұрын

    @@ben3989 it takes about 1-2 sessions on the 1050 to figure it out. I’m 100kg so I need around 14knots to get up. You just need to develop the muscle memory to apply a lot of front foot pressure and try not to pop up high on foil until your board breaks the surface for a second or two. If you don’t time it right, you’ll drop back down off foil which is super annoying. It helps to be overpowered on the wing to learn the timing. Once you figure it out, the foil is a dream. Cuts right through chop and you can wing right down the face of a wave without popping out. Fast too. Great glide and easy gybes.

    regarding the 1300 on prone surf, do you find any issues with it having too much lift during takeoffs. Is there a max wave size that can be popped up on using this wing?

  • @davewestfoils

    @davewestfoils

    I definitely don't use the 1300 anymore for Prone - and never really did unless I was desperate. I used only to test it for others. Its a big slow wing (faster than the 1150 and 1310) so conditions need to be weaker. It's not so much size - more power. You want weak waves. Pumps for days though.

    Would you consider taking out the 1150 in small waves swell (or it's too slow) for ProneFoil. What would be your favourite Axis Wing (Red Fuse) to ProneFoil in small conditions (72 kg Rider)

  • @davewestfoils

    @davewestfoils

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi! I'm sure there is plenty of fun to be had on the 1150 in small swell. If I had one there is no doubt I'd do it every now and then. Even rock starts or beach starts would be alot of fun with the 1150. Do you currently have an 1150? For prone I run as short a fuse as possible. So it'd be the crazy short. It just changes the cadence of your pump so it can be more taxing pumping and more pitch sensitive. Which I like but can be a difficult adjustment if you don't get alot of time on foil.

    I’ll chime in here. The 1150 is not a great foil for the ocean especially in any chop. You tend to get a lot of buffeting and turbulence with the 1150. I am in a different category as I’m 63 kilos. But that 1150 is made for one thing. And that’s glide. It’s ok in a lake. Or dock starting. But in the ocean I find it’s out of its element.

    Thanks for the response. I just wanted to clarify something in my original question. Amongst the three things I would like a foil to do, i.e., dock start / wake theif, downwinding, and prone surf, the discipline where I want the best performance / efficiency is in the dock starting / wake thiefing area, followed by downwinding. With that in mind, would you still recommend the spitfire 1100 most for someone who is 85kg? My original comment said 80kg, but i weigh 5kg more in winter with a wetsuit. Thanks again.
