I did the breathing exercises for 2 months before I caught covid and I really believe it helped me cope with the illness. It helped with the drowning sensation and the panic that it induces

If you are going into the cold please remember that when you get into extreme cold or extreme hot like the sauna for the first 40 seconds your body exaggerates the temperature and increases your anxiety levels to make you aware that the temperature has changed. It is a type of warning system. So when you do it just remember after 40 seconds the temperature will actually level off and your body will calm down.

This is an excellent point and is I think one of the powerful lessons of the activity is that you can have all of the alarms going off telling you danger when in fact your wiser self knows that you are safe and can reassure that panicked self that you will get through it and it will get easier and it will get easier

Great point! I have a sauna blanket (think of a heating pad the size of a sleeping bag). Every time that I get into it, the first minute I have to take my mind to the happy places to focus on the most happiest of memories because of the change in temperature. Doing this, sometimes I will fall asleep while in it. Thankfully, there is a timer which shuts down the heat after 30, 45 or 60 minutes (your choice). Living in Florida, I use this in the morning before the temperatures outside get too warm. I am going to be incorporating Wim's method -- I just have to juggle the timing of the cold with the heat from the sauna.

Seriously!? I'm not seeing a life without benzodiazepines at the moment it's sad I'm 27 I know they're doing me in but I'm scared of facing reality without now I've used them for so long; unless I drink a collosal amount of mescaline or something again except this time with a shaman instead of up a Portuguese mountain. How fast did it come into effect and did you experience any withdrawals or did your mind and body actually change like opiate addicts and ibogaine? May I ask the type of painkiller but you needn't answer? I could see myself doing this method... meditation etc I find utterly impossible but when you're physically doing something to your body I find it so much easier to get into a meditative state. It's like how ear acupuncture really weirdly helped heroin/Buprenorphine withdrawal. When the slight pain was there it was really nice to have it to concentrate on and quiet the mind without it wandering off onto trains of thought, holistic approaches to things are the way but psychedelics are just telling me the world is too dark a place at the minute and I should be helping but I don't know how I can so I get caught in a real life acid loop of taking valium/xanax almost to pause my thought while I come up with the solution to my problems but it never comes and the cycle repeats I could see this similar to extreme acupuncture which could make me think nah I don't need to eat six I'll take 3 and hopefully carry on from there as I've relapsed on benzos so much they refuse any more reduction plans which is fair enough. I shouldn't really say this but heroin and then methadone/subutex was a walk in the park withdrawal wise and I've stayed off opiates for a year and 7 months now. I'm half asleep blabbing about my life look at this prime example of social media addiction too everybody

@@pijin13 I'm sad to hear your struggles. I'm an addict as well, but never from opioids or benzos. But I know hundreds that are and I've known a couple of hundred who have died on them as well! Compared to the people I know, you're already ahead of the game. At least you know you want to quit, which is better than most and if you can quit heroin, you can quit this for sure! Quitting Xanax is dangerous. It's like quitting drinking, it can kill you! That's why you're withdrawals are worse. I've heard people speak of Suboxone being a worse detox than H. you have to slowly wean yourself so your body doesn't go into shock. It seems to be your DOC. My son's too! He's an alcoholic and in jail right now for another DUI, but honestly it's not the drinking that gets him in trouble. It's the benzos! Every time he starts he can't stop for at least a week or 2, wrecks his car, but doesn't remember when, how, or where, wants to fight everybody, he basically turns cold blooded evil and ends up in jail and can't remember why! Personally I think they should be outlawed or banned! Mind over matter friend. You just have to get over the Fear! That's our worst enemy in every situation! I've been doing the Wim Hof Method for 8 months, cold showers & breathing. I do ice baths to and I love it. My body healed all immflamation, and helped me de stress. When I do the breathing exercises, I sometimes feel a light touch on my pelvic area. I also hear static and cicadas, as well as tingling and body temperature changing. When I do my breathing exercises, I try stay still, and close my eyes. Just recently I saw a spark, it showed itself, then gone. Very quick, but clear. I've learnt that we can only gain from here, and to keep going. This has saved me...for anyone who is confused, fustrated, over thinking, to much chatter in your head, do this. I started to Wim Hof about 4 months ago. I have an autoimmune disease that affects my eyes and at the time I started these methods I was due my 5th eye operation where a steroid implant is put inside of my eye. I had been in a constant flare for 3 years and had tried a series of medications like steroids and immunosuppressants which suppress my symptoms (and immune system) with a range of other nasty side effects. Without these medications/operations I face sight loss so was a constant battle. ANYWAYS, long story short - since starting to have cold showers everyday my flare up of 3 years has subsided. I am fully aware that this could be related to factors outside of my control that I am not aware of but I am also 100% open to the possibility that cold showers have somehow helped me.

Hailing form a slavic country, cold submersion is a longstanding tradition in our family. Every winter everyone gathers at the frozen lake or pond and starts preparing. Some people will be hacking away at the ice to expose a nice dipping hole, others will be setting up the hot-tub, collecting wood, preparing the food and drinks, the children spend the time running around, playing or helping with the wood chopping. When everything is prepared, people gather in the hot tub, spend a few minutes heating up and then go for a dip in the ice hole followed by a quick grab at some food or drink before going back into the hot tub to start the round again. Aside form the many health benefits (people getting less sick, less often, easy weight management, resistance to harsh weathers) this also provides a very wonderful activity for the whole family to get involved and spend the day/night doing. It does not just benefit the individual but the community too.

I've been doing cold showers for 50 years now that I learned from Kundalini Yoga practice. It always jolts me into reality, lifts me out of pain and depression and I naturally utter Wahe Guru (the mantra raises the energy too and means I feel the guru within me and everywhere) after a minute or so. But the best benefit is that I rarely feel cold and my wardrobe pretty much consists of short sleeve shirts with an occasional sweater--even though I live in a 4 season climate in Japan. But then...people think you are weird or superhuman---which is kind of a kick too, when all it really is is the yogic lifestyle of cold showers and deep breathing (i like breath of fire a lot). Actually there are a lot of Japanese that like standing under waterfalls--there's a nice one by my house and the busiest day is the first of the year (and it is cold!)Blessings to you all and especially to anyone who has read this!

Hey Russell. I've been doing this as long as you, and this is what I've gotten so far. 1. First, it taught me that after a brief moment of discomfort, it wasn’t that hard after all and I actually now really enjoy it. That encouraged me to take that attitude towards other things I preferred to put off. Starting that report, dealing with insurance, going to a meeting I didn’t want to. I just let myself dive in and take those first moments knowing they might be less than pleasant and get it done. It really helped me get my shlt together. 2. Don’t think about getting in. Just get in. You thoughts aren’t making things better or easier. Why work against your own decision to do something good for you? 3. After a week or so, I didn’t just feel invigorated, I felt like it was a personal reboot. I do it twice a day, now. It helped me start the day and helped me clear off the stuff that I don’t want to carry into the future. I felt hooked on it. 4. After a few weeks, I realized that a lot of what I thought were my thoughts and feelings were just residue of daily experience. I just collected moods, slights, unfinished thoughts, irritations and anxieties into my body and carried them around like they were me. They’re not me. They are just crap accumulations of memories in my body. After a while, I felt like not only was I cleaning out the daily stuff, I was making progress on the long term stuff I mistakenly thought was me, my mood, my nature, my concerns. I can’t wait to see how far this goes. Sadhguru says the water in your body is accumulating memory and it should be washed away. 5. My hair and skin look amazing. 6. Hey, I know it is a privilege thing to act as if it is a big deal you were dunked in cold water for a few minutes. It’s not a big deal. Billions of people don’t get a choice. It is getting in touch your thoughts and feelings that’s a big deal and for some people this might be a way to do it. Stop being such a domesticated animal 7. It’s free.

My brother and I have included the WHM to our daily wellness routine for the last year w/ intermittent fasting. We are 77 & 78yrs. of age.. Can’t get over how good I feel…. We live on opposite coast here in the States, it hasn’t been to cold here in NYC, but I can tell how differently my body is reacting to the cold weather. Walking barefooted (grounding) and taking daily 5 to 7mls strolls keeps me alert and involved in my evolvement. And when home, which I’m now doing a lot of, (do to the current situation) I KZread binge your shows and Podcasts, thanks…. Thought I’d partake of the Polar Bear Club which take a Plunge into the Ocean at Coney Island on New Years Day. Got over that foolish thought when I saw the droves of ppl that show up for that event. These days 3 is a crowd…. Happy New Year 2022…. 🤗🎉🙏🏽 NAMASTE

I had excruciating back pain from a muscle injury. I took a Wim Hof certified instructor led workshop and did the breathing followed by ice plunges. I did 2 ice plunges - 2 minutes and 5 minutes. Of course Ice has an immediate effect on pain and swelling- but the amazing thing was that my symptoms were gone for the following 72 hours. 5 minutes of Ice for 3 days of no pills, side effects and just great living! That is healing treatment.

I went to NYC to see Jordan Peterson live. The next day, upon a recommendation, I went to a Russian Banya specifically to get into the ice pool. I had listened to Wim on a podcast and was convinced that ‘he’s onto something’. 😂 Well, I got to the banya at 11 am and left at 5 pm. I alternated between sauna and ice pool. You’re right Russell, do not feel the water before you get into it--just plunge yourself into it. First plunge I think my brain stopped momentarily then I counted to 7 and got out. By the end of my day I was in the ice pool without a care in the world. Okay, I left that place and felt like my skin had been replaced. It was reptilian! I went out for dinner and was asked what I wanted to drink--I said wine and then said “No. Just…..water.” I didn’t want anything to poison my feeling. Then I walked 2 hours back to my hotel. I felt like a stick of dynamite! I slept like a newborn child. Wim Hof Method? It’s an elixir!

I'm 67 and have fibro, and I found it helps for pain enormously - sometimes for hours, as well as improving my mood. I also noticed increased clarity and energy. You feel like a Viking after! I used to HATE cold showers, but now I know how great I'll feel when it's done. I can't do it daily as I have ultra-dry skin, but even 2 cold bath/showers or one cold swim in the ocean in Canada per week has had benefits. More and more people are trying this - one man said cold-water swimming just makes him feel more alive. I agree - it's incredibly invigorating.

I have been doing WHM for about 6 months now, after finding his book and discovering his breathing method here on KZread. I started my showers off with 15 seconds every day for a week then increased it to 30, then 45 etc. I actually find myself looking forward to my cold shower every day now and feel cheated if I don’t get a chance to have one. This method of slowly increasing the time under the cold water works brilliantly. I have also started doing the breathing method every day too and am finding that adding in the breathing is that extra bit I needed.

I don't do it very often but have jumped into a very cold pool a few times during the winter months in Florida, done the cold showers after a hot shower off and on, or just stood out in the freezing weather almost bare and always barefoot. I like the thrill and energy rush I get from doing it mostly. I feel like a bottle of bubbly just shooting off with extreme amounts of energy. I was diagnosed with Lupus and RA at 50 years old (engine light came one, rude awakening lol). 8 to 10 or more hours sitting at a desk with little life balance and unable to eat properly almost killed me plus I had a 2 hour commute (lots of just sitting). I was also a weekend landscaping warrior, gardener, mother, weekend partier, and care taker of others in the family (just stretched in every direction you could imagine) and I did not really care for my body as well as I got older. I also used to be an avid mountain cyclist, loved riding my bike up in the mountains and getting lost for hours even if I could hardly walk the next day. After I got sick of course the medical industry just wanted to start filling me with medications which I've never been one for medications unless it was something natural from nature. I refused meds and started fighting to be able to walk again after weeks of laying in a bed with extreme high fevers and pain that felt as if I had broken bones in my body. My ankle bone structures were changing (one got bigger than the other) and I had a difficult time trying to walk because the pain brought me to tears. I was giving up as depression kicked in. I had never been down like this? I was always on the go. I gave up my accounting/payroll job (hated it anyways), just started letting go of everything. My poor husband was lost and didn't really want to be around me. I'm sure it was tough to see and hear me cry all the time living in my pjs looking like death. I was in a deep dark ass valley and quickly sliding down into the muck. My husband was clueless to help me and didn't know how to really prepare food so I was lucky if he offered me a cookie as he quickly would walk by my door way. As I was giving up the fight inside I stopped eating for almost a week. To my surprise my fevers subsided and the body suddenly started getting stronger and pain was starting to reside? The following week nothing but green apples mostly (always loved those tart suckers). I then slowly started TRX suspension strap training so I could start regaining my strength, then went into weight training and still do a bit of cold therapy. I am now 54 and stronger than I've ever been. Scares my husband these days, I can move mountains. No meds not even an ibuprofen ever. I am still rebuilding this body and have become relentless in doing so. This experience taught me many things and brought out an animal I've never known but I like her. It is possible to heal yourself.

I did the Wim Hoff method, along with morning pages, last year after feeling quite low with the whole Covid thing and not being able to see my kids and grandchildren. It changed my life so much. The cold shower was something I was afraid of as I hated cold water. I didn't know why until I took my first one then memories came back of bathing in front of the fire when I was younger and having to get out the bath and the awful cold as my mum put the towel around me. That's when it hit me. After the shower when I put the towel around me and how amazing it felt. I persevered and I found I got used to it. I live in Spain and where we live the sea is always freezing and last year I actually managed to get in and swim around with the few others and felt part of a special club. I was so proud of myself. I think Wim Hoff should be taught in school from teens to get them through those harder years and to give them a sense of self and self strength to carry then forward. It's natural and amazing.

Something that has interested me in the WimHof method is that I was doing something similar before I knew it had a name. Years ago I got used to the cold by simply "accepting the cold", which is what I called my method, by breathing in the cold in and holding it for a few seconds cuz I noticed that when I held my breath I didn't shiver as much, if at all, and controlling my breathing took my mind off the cold. So here, maybe a decade later I learn of this method and I'm ready to dive in

Also, my hormones have completely balanced and I went from having hot flashes 8 x a day (prior to cold baths) to having zero hot flashes after 30 days of cold baths. @Darren holy cr@p... So your trying to tell me that wim and russel are deluted because there way wont work for you?! The same goes for you then... All you do is speak of enlightenment by "your god" wich is pretty much the same as what they do... Only difference is your mindset, believing in oneself or believing there is one man up there in the sky that believes in you no matter what. For some it works and For some it doesnt, just like your sense of spirituality. Dont claim there way doesnt work and right after ramble about how your god does because someone says so.... A god nobody has ever seen before and thru history people believe in because they where either told to or just started to believe because so many others did the same thing.... And how can so many people be wrong right?!..... Anyway.....this is just like your comment an oppinion i believe in and is subject to interpertation as anyone sees fit... Like everything in life. What Wim hofman is trying to say is that your mind is a powerfull tool that if put to proper use can change your life in so many ways.... It is sad that people discard his way and believe in something they cant see but only believe in rather then something they can feel and experience. In the end the result is prob the same i gues... Wim hofs way and being a believer of Faith will both leave you with a warm feeling inside. In any case, have a Nice day

@Darren I'm happy that Christianity provides you with peace and comfort. That is not the case for everyone. And I would (from a place of kindness) encourage you to really think about what you're saying when you claim you are in sole possession of the truth, and that everyone who doesn't believe what you do is wrong. Believing that your way of thinking and your religion is the only truth is a means of using religion to serve your ego. In that way, religion is creating a sense of superiority and conflict. There are many religions and there are many healthy and true ways to live one's life.

@Ben Höflinger Yes, I agree that physical discipline can lead to spiritual growth. Discipline and struggle are ways of evolving the consciousness and transcending the ego. • @HollyMcLaughlinArt

    @HollyMcLaughlinArt

    2 жыл бұрын

@Ben Höflinger I do understand your point...or what I think is the point you are making. Are you saying that it would feel more purposeful if we know there is one true source of spirituality...one true religion?...rather than the feeling that we're all sort of just making up what works for us as we go? If that's what you are saying, I hear your view in that...I really do. From my perspective, a religion (such as Christianity, just because that's what I am most familiar with) can't even agree amongst themselves. So it certainly doesn't make me, who doesn't find the Christian narrative appealing to begin with, believe that Christians have found the one truth. Again, I'm not trying to pick on Christians...it's just the religion of which I am most knowledgeable. I also view religious beliefs as filtered through human thought, which I don't trust. I know my own thoughts often aren't true, so I'm not keen on trusting another's thoughts on what is the right lifestyle for me. Would it be easier if we all followed the same religion because we all knew for a fact that was the one true thing? Maybe. But I don't see that as ever being a possibility. What I do see a possibility is people following whatever lifestyle is most compelling for them and allows for them to achieve the most self-growth while not harming others. I also feel a kind of peace in being okay with the unknown and with not knowing...being okay with uncertainty (as far as "is there a god? is there an afterlife?" type thoughts). You are right that there is a lot to ponder. I am okay with others coming up with different answers than me, and just want that same consideration in return. Thank you for your respectful conversation. I appreciate it, and I in no way mean to disrespect your religion or lifestyle when I disagree with it or don't find it compelling for living my own life that way.

It’s taken me 7 years to be able to do cold showers every day, now its just a part of my routine. Keep it up! You can’t succeed without failure.

7 years to be able to stick to it or to just get used to it? Took me 4 days to get comfortable with it and there's nothing special about me, if anything I used to be more bothered by the cold than my peers.

@@opustravels3659 I meant stick to it, everyday, lots of variables have taken me off track in the past. How cold the water is where you live… The colder your area the colder the water. The difference in temperature between summer and winter can knock you off track. I take ice baths in the summer where I am because the shower temperature doesn’t get low enough (& I’m in the UK) Your general mental health. Going on holiday where it’s so hot you literally can’t get cold water. I also started from a very dark place in my life so it’s been a slow and gruelling crawl out of that cave with many set backs.

I've been doing it for over a month. I started with a bucket of ice water on my head. I currently soak in a freezer. Water at 8 to 10 degrees Celsius. I also do breathing and a little stretching every day. During the practices, I feel an enormous sense of well-being, which takes time in my body during the day. Despite that, I have a bit of a cold. I thought these flus/colds would leave me. I'll keep on.

What a lovely coincidence. I *literally* used the breathing app for the very first time this morning! My son who is, in fact, legitimately a Daoist priest, has been "encouraging" me (badger/harass/bother). As I took a cold shower afterwards, I found myself singing on repeat: "I don't like this! but I'm doing it anyway!". Now I'm sitting outside feeling simultaneously energized and peaceful. Please thank Wim for me 😊

i've been doing 8 rounds of the breathing technique (4 rounds twice a day) with a guided video and a 10 minute cold shower daily for over a year now. the benefits to my mood and energy are incredible. i've tried lots of different meditation, yoga, breath work routines over the years, but this one is by far the best.

Have cold showers every day. 5 minutes come out looking like a lobster but feel invigorated. Awesome man. Also the breath work is amaze balls. We take control of the flesh man and now the soul man is back in charge. Amen

The first time I tried Wim Hofs breathing meditation, I did it with two good friends of mine & about halfway through I started feeling very primal like I was tapping into a time before civilised behaviour; my monkey-self. The sort of rapid breathing, to me in that state, related to how animals act just before getting into a fight but because we ARE accustomed to civilised behaviour I had the awareness to observe, from a wild state, my friends around me & I couldn't help but notice that this was how early human beings felt as tribes were originally formed. I felt an incredibly strong sense of community. I highly recommend doing this on a regular basis, it'll make you a more humble/friendlier human being in the world.

I've been doing WHM method for about 2 months now it's amazing how quickly your body adapts to the cold doing it on a daily basis. I don't feel right now if I don't take a cold shower in the morning. The main benefits I've found are reduced inflammation and just feeling much more alert and with it through the daytime
