Nose or mouth breathing - Which is better? |

Ойын-сауық

One question I get asked very often is whether it's better to breathe through the nose or mouth during the WHM breathing or just in general. In this video, I'm answering this and more of your questions about breathing.

I've been exposing myself increasingly to cold winter showers at the end of each shower. I'd gotten up to 2 minutes, but tonight I hit 10+. I lost track of time because I became super emotional. I stopped resisting the cold and something so deep in me was activated. I just cried, and had vivid flashbacks to swimming in the chilly Colorado River. Unreal. I can't wait to do these for the rest of my life. I crave ice submersion now. Skin is warm, the ice water feels so good, like emotional healing I need inside of me. No shivering or pain, only release and freedom. I found the way out just like wim did

Thanks for the video Wim Hof! Three benefits not mentioned: 1. Nasal breathing, due to the shape of the nasal cavity, helps send the air down to the bottom of the lungs which are bigger and connected to the parasympathetic system. Flex your nose like smelling a flower. 2. Mouth breathing in dry climates will dry out your mouth and throat. 3. Nasal breathing helps filter the air better to reduce the amount of dust, bacteria, viruses, etc which enter the body.

Nasal breathing is better for several reasons: 1. Facial structure 2. The nasal system has mucous membranes and other components that are there to filter the air you breathe. 3. Nitric oxide is produced by the body to help deliver oxygen to your extremities when you nasal breathe.

11 things I've noticed in myself since starting wim hoff breathing and cold showers 6 months ago.... 1. I get up now at 615 no arguments with myself. 2. I don't miss the breathing session in the morning or evening ever. 3. I started to watch my diet to the point where I can't believe I don't want puddings and chocolate and eat super foods. 4.i started yoga, again every morning without fail. 5. I'm alert but relaxed. 6. I'm calmer with myself and my kids. 7. I'm more aware of my thoughts, my self awareness is increasing. 8. I feel like I'm getting stronger everyday as opposed to getting weaker as I get older. 9 I started taking vitamins 10. I watch less TV, to the point of sometimes just sitting after a breathing session for a good time , just still. 11. Im generally more disciplined, the other day I did 5 loads of washing in one day, wtf is going on!!! Thanks wim for changing my life , love to all xxx

How about drinking it as a tea instead of smoking it and check out some of Gabor Mate's work on trauma, disease and addictions.

I'm claustraphobic and the very idea of lockdown brought on a panic attack and was running wildly round the house. Then I began to rationalise. I'd heard that it was impossible to panic if correct breathing was practised. I forced myself to sit down and started breathing long, slow and deep (LSD) breaths through my nose. After about five minutes I was completely calm and after another two minutes I fell asleep. I was delighted and I promise you that proper breathing long, slow and deep through the nose will alleviate many mental health problems. But it has to be nasal!!

Yep. That's, how breath is used in "Pranayama" - Exercises, also, - and that's very old vedic science!!! Mouth is fire/power. Nose both, but more "easy water" ... and there is one fact: especially, if u live in a city: The nose has a lot of "filtering qualities" for the incoming air. That's an important difference between nose n mouth - breathing! The most important thing is TO PRACTICE. After some time, all of u will be able, to get calm in a stress - situation, by just taking 3 breaths.... and that's the best anti - panic thing I know!!! ⚠️⚠️⚠️ It just takes some time, of practice, so that your body gets used to react instantly when you take 3 deep, conscious breaths, imagining, with the outflow, that all the stress you feel, just disappears in clouds (or something else..). IT WORKS VERY WELL!!! Best wishes. Thanx to you, WIM! Be blessed! (you showed the "average science", that you can do things which seem impossible!!! A great job! BRAVO!

I've been taught that it's impossible to panic if you breath through your nose. Andrelalin and lactic acid can't flow when you breath through your nose. Professional athletes can sustain their pace if they concentrate on breathing through their nose. What Wim says here is consistent with what I've been trained/told.

Thank you for this clarity Wim. I have been doing mouth breathing because that was how I felt I heard you were doing it. I did notice some of the tension you mentioned and a pressure in my sternum. I put the question out there, why I was experiencing this pressure, and this video came to me. I will move to nasal inhale for my next session 🙏

I am into "Pranayama" ( - special, conscious ways of breathing) - since over 20 years. Also learned "Rebirthing" - which is also based on special breathing skills. YOUR "WIM HOF - breathing - METHOD" combines different skills of breathing. For me it is the best technique ever!!! Thank you, WIM. Your "system" really makes sense!!! (also the exposure to the cold/cold showers....). I always had problems, "to hold my breath" - but now, with your great method, I am able, to stay way longer n longer without breathing!!! Especially this part is very much like deep meditation... ("the time between", where you don't breath)! I just can recommend it for everyone - especially in times, where we need a strong immune - system!!! Let's do it!!!

The end result of the Pranayama practices might be wide or wider. Alternate Nostril breathing(Nadi Shodhana) , cleaning breath, bellows breath (Bhastrika). So no throwing away Pranayama is not a good idea. Learning Wims method is excellent too. In Taoism one goal is to breath into the Dan Tien - the lower elixir field.
