Hyundai IONIQ6 Review - Never spec this feature on your EV ! | 4K

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Living with the Hyundai Ioniq6 for a week was an interesting experience. There was much to like about the car but it was spec'd with one option that I really didn't get on with. Digital door mirrors ! It's not the first time I have driven a car with digital door mirrors but I really just can't get on with them.
Apart from that the Ioniq6 is an impressive package. It has striking looks and all the tech you could wish for. It has a slippery profile and apparently offers great efficiency. The only way to put that to the test is to take it on a road trip !

I drive the IONIQ 5, with digital wing cameras. The car is great to drive, acceleration, one pedal driving, regen braking, smooth ride, hugs the road. Some 2 years plus ago I had a diesel superb, company car. The major driving experience between diving diesel and electric is tiredness. On long trips in a diesel car I chewed gum, keeping my face muscles alert, since driving electric I don’t chew gum. On the digital wing cameras I find there is no blind spot, when indicating the screens are marking with safe zones to manovre into, reversing they are set to turn on wide angle so no need to move your head to see what is around. You also have additional rear and more side cameras to show you a 360 deg view from top down. The wing cameras, yes are different, once I got used to them I think they are great. Oh also in the rain you get a clear view, no rain drops on the screen.

Great review - thank you. I missed out on the digital side mirrors as have a first edition car, I agree they seem a little pointless and fix a problem that doesn't exist. The audible speed warnings are a pain, we can only hope that a future OTA update will allow us to silence them permanently! Other than that I am very impressed with the car. On a long run up the A1 in perfect weather and traffic conditions I managed 4.6 m/kwh, though I doubt I will replicate that, in general it returns around 3.6 m/kwh

I waited longer for an Audi E-Tron S because I didn’t want the silly digital mirrors. Tried them with a demo car for 48 hours and agree 100% with your comments about them (parking and night time driving). Reverse parking was just awful and I’m convinced no amount of time behind the wheel would replace the ease of a real mirror. Not related to this review, but the range of the Audi E-Tron is quite poor but we use it for city driving only and it is brilliant for that.

The Audi and i6 side-view digital mirrors are a terrible design. The screen displays should not be located on the doors. Mirrors rely on reflection, however, displays screens linked to a camera do not. The logical position for side-view camera display screens is directly infront of the driver. Preferably, on either side of the driver display screen.

The Germans had a ridiculously simple method to deal with crashes. When the traffic was slowing to a standstill on a dual carriageway with hard shoulder one lane of vehicles would go tight to but not encroach into the hard shoulder while the other lane would go as close to the central reservation as possible. This left two clear lanes for emergency vehicles to get to crash scene and get the traffic moving again faster. On a three lane the hard shoulder and middle lane would be left completely empty. Have seen it in action and it really does get emergency services to scene of accident way quicker then relying on English drivers common sense.

That’s a good honest review. Having had a good look at the Ioniq 6 when buying our Tucson Hybrid N Line S (and we’re delighted with it) we were very impressed. Adore the styling, especially the rear end. It’s an elegant car. Those digital mirrors are a real no no though and the small sunroof is a bit half hearted, guess it could be to save weight. All in all as your review aptly shows, it’s an excellent EV. Cheers 😁

8 thousand miles in our Ioniq 6 and averaging 4.5 miles per kWh. The 18" wheels really add efficiency. Too bad you can't get them in the UK. Not sure why they design a slippery car and then only equip them with sticky, too wide wheels and tires.

Per efficency. Ive had a kona 64kw for almost 2 years. Done a lot of different tests 😂 3 trips to blackpool summer and winter i can get their and back no charging. I get about 4.6kwh ish. Thats 240ish miles for me. but small hops with pre heating. Just over a mile that goes too 2.6 - 2.8 in winter. In the summer i get about 5.2 same journey. So it def varies person to person and journeys. But i have been impressed. Their gauge for power/mileage tends to be very accurate. Most ive got from one charge is 310 miles that was this year with no aircon on just to see what it could do. But that was small hops. Keep up the good work

Hi, I bought an ID3 Pro Max in march 2022. It has IQ Matrix headlights, X rear lights, repeater rear indicators, augmented heads up display, powered front seats, glass roof, covered arm rests and a lot more. It’s still on Software 2.4 which is annoying. It’s waiting on a visit to the dealer to have SOS System fixed and hopefully a software update. I don’t think I will replace it with another VW. I’ll probably look at other brands, particularly Korean.

I have the digital mirrors on the Ioniq 5 Namsan edition. If that model had been available with normal mirrors i would have gone with that (wanted the panoramic roof). But despite initial concerns (prior to getting the car) they work abosulety fine and took all of 30 mins or so to get used to. Coming from a Mk V GTI they offer a far improved level of vision. Work fine in sunny, dark and rainy conditions. You can adjust the brightness if needed.. I wouldnt necessarily gravitate to cars with them in the future but no complaints so far. I see the Lotus Eletre has adopted them.

I like the styling of this car. As I've said before, the spoilers on the rear remind me of the twin spoilers on 1980s XR3s and XR4s. A touch of nostalgia for me. The best part: it isn't an SUV or CUV. I echo the comments of others on the ridiculous exterior mirrors. I hope someone leaks the wind tunnel data on these horrors. I suspect these mirrors' aerodynamic drag is only measurable at super-legal speeds and even then is of trivial significance... I would enjoy driving this vehicle. The quietness alone is attractive to me. I'd been surprised to learn that the silly mirrors contribute all that much to the silence. I enjoy watching these reports of yours...especially with a Petrol Pup aboard. Oh...I forgot to ask: what did you think of these electric mirrors during the night driving? Happy and safe motoring! Aloha.

I wish there was a true replacement for the Ioniq 38kwh. I have never dipped below 4 mi/kWh and usually get 6+ mi/kWh and over 5 on the motorway. Surely they could add the 800v speedy charging in a stylish design like this with a bit more power and achieve the same. I guess at 2p a mile it's not really necessary but it means a tiny 38kwh battery can get 220 miles in summer without difficulty. Keeping costs and weight down. The original ioniq may be down on power but it's pretty advanced from an efficiency perspective.

I have the Namsan edition with DSM's, coming from a Seat Leon. Much wider FoV with the DSM's so I don't find myself looking around as much. Think they are excellent in the rain and low light, that has been the biggest positive. In terms of cost, most normal wing mirrors have a wide variety of electronics in them. New i-Pace mirror is £800, can't see these being that far off that.

Maybe instead of 150+ mile trips to the Cotswold area, try doing a mundane commute and talk about the technology, music, maps, remote connections etc which is a big selling point for me. I don´t have any problems with digital side mirrors at all and I reverse in to parking slots whenever I can, because it´s fun and convenient ;) Don't you have the smart headlights in UK? Very few mention them but they seem to be a real bonus. Meeting a car that has got them is an initially weird but positive experience. Lots of light but no blinding... I like your review, nice to have someone who likes driving to do them and not just someone totally focused on the "entertainment system", hp and how fast they are. A comfortable, quiet car with good behavior on a twisty road coupled with swift overtaking is on my wish list and if I like the looks I'm joining the fan club! We get our Ioniq 6 in the new year (slow to get them in Sweden). Fortunately my husband like the car too, I'm a lucky lady!

Good review. 268 miles of range is OK if one can find adequate charging stations (capable of 350kW charging) along the way and be back on the road in 15+ minutes. I have to stop at max every two hours to stretch my legs and other necessities. I’m not a sedan person but the overall appearance is acceptable even the wind scoop in the back. The mirrors do look a little strange but would not be an issue in the USA since camera mirrors are not allowed by law. Looking forward to a better efficiency test and charging curve capability, however, you experienced real world driving on this trip.

Pete, I think it was Volvo who discovered that the aero benefits of the mirrors was more than negated by the power used to run them and their screens. I also agree will the inability of the mirrors to allow you to change perspective. They are just gadgets, and we know what happens to gadgets.

My former i30N Fastback was at times a bugger to reverse even with normal mirrors and it's small turning circle, so I'd definatley not have the camera mirrors. I managed to solve the issue with a Fiesta I had by ordering a 'dash mat' from the US for it. They (Covercraft), already made them for the US Fiesta, so were able to make one for a right hand drive car. This cleared up the issue by at least 96%, with just the screen vents showing. However, the cost of postage was more than the dash mat, but, I value life so it was worth it. What would you do to stop this issue?

Thanks, I agree re wing mirrors, but perhaps I am too old to adapt. On balance I prefer my EV6 AWD gt line, a very similar car, not the GT, which over 18000 miles of mixed driving has given me 3.5 miles/Kwh, I have never reset the cumulative register. I thought the blind spot monitoring feature on the EV6 which the camera shows up when you indicate was a good feature, but I rarely look at it now, and I suppose you could get used to the camera wing mirrors. I suppose I could get used to a Tesla touch screen but I prefer not to.

I love the styling but I do agree about the mirrors! Good for HGV's - gimic for cars! How do you find the camera mirror in the Defender if you have one? The I6 does have hints of the old Citroen DS and I do love it! If I were to go electric I would go for this! I have driven the 5 and I liked it! :)

@petrolped - I know you haven't got the time to trawl through the sub menus but there is a feature to change the speed warning bong to either disable it or change it from the speed limit to only sound at 3 or 5 mph over that limit. I have mine at 5 mph over and it rarely bongs at me. You might have put some potential buyers off if they think it's fixed forever.

Interesting comment that you’ve not tested an EV that’s returned more 4m/kWh, but this look really aerodynamic…… my Ioniq 38kWh has never dipped below 4.3 m/kWh in the 50,000 miles that I’ve done in it. Looks a great car, and a pleasant change for the bricks on wheels that seem so popular. Agree about the door cameras, a backwards step in safety and functionality.

I've got an old 2015 Nissan Leaf 24KWh and it is regularly doing 5.2 - 5.4 mls/kwh. Okay I agree it is now of it's time and the new cars go a lot further than my 85 mile but I do 25 miles a day and so it suits my lifestyle. It's devalued so much now that I have to keep it but the loss over 8 years is probably equivilent to 3 years depreciation of these £40K plus cars, so I feel I can live with it. Got hooked on this channel years ago because of the soft top Mini Paceman you had.

Great review! Kind of in limbo here in the US since it seems the car makers are now moving to the NACS plug (Tesla) which will influence the charger station developments, personally I do not fancy having to use an adapter. On the mirrors, I have been noting that some cameras are more washed out by bright sunlight than others which could get problematic with side mirrors and rear view mirrors that use cameras. The biggest insult about the lack of hard shoulders in the UK, is calling them "smart", like a bad joke.

The other issue on those stupid video mirrors is about focus. When you look in a real mirror your eyes focus on the reflection, not the mirror itself. So when you switch between looking out of the windscreen and looking in a real mirror you’re focussing on a similar mid to far distance. But with a video mirror you must focus on the actual screen which is much closer than your view out of the windscreen. So you’re constantly having to change focus and as you get older, that is more difficult.

Kia and Hyundai know how to make efficient EVs. The 6 in theory should be very efficient as it’s so slippery. The issue seems to be that in pursuit of 300 mile plus range they become so heavy that you just can’t get efficiency from them. The answer? Less battery weight and more fast chargers I guess. My 2019 E Golf is averaging well over 4 miles per kWh ( actually 4.3 since we got it a few weeks ago) and in EV terms it’s old tech…..if you threw away half the batteries in the Hyundai my guess is your efficiency might get up to well over 4 mi/kWh but the range will be two thirds of what’s currently advertised. We need to end the obsession with non-stop range.

If my own experience of speed limit sign recognition is anything to go by, it can not be enforced in its current form. Linked to a voluntary speed limiter I find it useful, but it frequently doesn’t work. E.g. It will see a limit on a side road and set that. It follows limits indicated for lorries only or towing caravans. It doesn’t read very well the electronic variable speed limit signs, especially the end of limit sign.

The Bongs would drive me insane though. Just think how much energy we could save if motorways were limited to 60mph. My equivalent Tesla's lifetime consumption is 4.4 miles per kWh after 4 years. I get well over 5 on my commute or on coast highway runs in summer (that typically includes one or two traffic snarls despite going early to avoid the worst traffic). In AU its increasingly hard to maintain 110km/h thanks to congestion so the limit might as well be 100, or 60mph. I don't hypermile, but I do anticipate and maintain momentum where I can. It's one way of making driving an EV more engaging.

I was invited to look around the car at the local dealer at a pre-launch do. It looks pretty good, ( I quite like the back end). I'm not tall but as I sat first in the passenger seat, then the driver's seat and then the rear seat I bumped my head every time. VERY annoying. I, too, dislike the camera mirrors for maneuvering. As an aside I have a Kona EV. I recently drove from East Yorks over the (magnificent) Humber bridge to Norwich via the country roads of Lincolnshire, a lovely drive. I pushed on as much as I could, but not of course on the dreadful A17 or A47. I was stunned to get 5.2 miles / KWh. On the journey home it rained but I still got 4.8 M/KWh. If I had pushed on down the motorway would expect 3.3M/KWh at best. It was an eye-opener how going a bit slower makes a big difference. BTW, the GridServe at SE Norwich is a great facility, I hope there will be more soon.
