This car deserves much more appreciation than it actually gets. Amazing what they managed to do with an ELECTRIC car. You genuinely forget its electric if you drive it in the ignition+shifter mode. Indeed a shame that the battery drains quite fast, but just wait for future models.

That feature which makes engine noises and gear shifts is actually very clever. Yes, it’s a gimmick but I think it shows that electric cars don’t have to be boring or one-dimensional. I think more car manufacturers should follow this.

The lack of gear shifts was the one thing making electric vehicles so boring. Now, they need to perfect the active sounds, and make fake manual transmissions !

Those engine "sound" sounds 100 times better than the BMW sound of i4 and so on.

Of course this will never replace a real petrol engine, but the attempt to get close and the way they tried not to make this car as boring as other electric cars is very impressive and in my opinion a success. That's how you set yourself appart from other brands

I always see people criticising this car for the fake gearshifts and noises etc. But a) you can turn all that off, b) it makes it different to every other EV out there, c) check out the BMW X2 M40i if really want embarrassing fake noises...

You actually hate them? Wich have you driven? Hate..that is a strong word. I have not a single thing in my life i "hate". I daily an EV and have a sunday car that smells petrol and pops and bangs anywhere but the problem is my EV rips the skin of my V8 sunday car so i just drive it in good weather to drive myself deaf again for a day or two

I call it dynamic feedback. Any car guy who's ever driven hard or tracked a car knows it's critical for driving engagement and safety. The sound will evolve over time. What's important is that HYUNDAI has engineered inertia and feel from an EV. They deserve a ton of credit.

it can also change gear itself with the simulated 8 gear. it's a shame you don't show that. it's one of the coolest things about it

Great review of a great car. I have a "regular" Ioniq 5 right now, and I really want the N version. It is really easy to spoil a good design with spoilers, diffusers and such, but Hyundai managed to do it just right. The car looks aggressive but not too much. In the interior only the seats and the steering wheel have changed, they may have done something more to that. I have to say that I was really sceptical about the fake sound effects, but over time I do appreciate them more. It is a great way to take the old-fashioned petrol heads to a whole different experience, without losing too much. The only reason that this works well because it is well executed by Hyundai. Oh and you can choose to have the sound effects on the outside of the car as well, which is funny. You lose the frunk space because of the larger electric motor, and because of the speaker for those sound effects... After a while, you will get used to some controls you need often in the steering wheel. For example, lane keep assist can be disabled by long pressing the small steering wheel button on the left side of the steering wheel. And you can assign the star button on the steering wheel to a menu you select, for example the safety menu. On my car, I have not yet found a good shortcut for the star button. Funny to see that the order of the button clusters on the steering wheel have switched positions on the N, compared to the regular car :)

If this in not one of the most clever features this year, then i dont know what it is. Kudos for Hyundai for hiring ex BMW staff and have made their cars so desirable... BMW you can see your sales decreasing and asking your self why !!! Great review Max

They based it specifically on their turbo 4 Elantra N engine. I’d guess different engine profiles would almost be a certainty eventually

I'm happy with what Hyundai did with Sound Experience. I know its not for Everyone but for me i would definitely Enjoy Driving it that way.

Thats a good looking car + the petrol mode imo is a GREAT idea. Simply because petrol engine acoustics and driving characteristics is what makes cars a full package of feast for all senses. Nice!!

Yeah also imagine simulating different shifts and shift speeds, for example the LFA single clutch.. Different powerbands, for example the powerband of an LFA.. Or the turbo lag of an old turbo car.. Or simultating a manual transmission.. Really cool options

Funny that gear shifts where brought about by necessity in the early days. The inconvenience became pleasure. Now its hard to shake it off.

The feature of crossing the lines can be easily turned of on the steering wheel if you hold it for a few seconds Same goes for traction control, you hold down the button behind the steering wheel where the light adjustment is too

It's like the feeling when you drive CVT gearbox, with paddle : you can simulate a manual shifting up to 7 or 8 speed gearbox. I have a honda jazz vtec and really enjoyed it

I really hope the other manufacturers do this as well. Its awesome.

Imagine simulated manual shifting with customizable engine config, sound and rev range. Not gonna lie, I didn't like EVs because of this lack of "life" but this N looks like so much fun with the active sound!

I've got the first year (2022) Awd limited version of this car and it's a great car. I am considering trading it in for this N model. My only concern is ride quality when you are just taking it easy and range.

I heard it has a combustion engine feeling. Power kicks in as RPM goes up. It even cuts power when you don't shit (fuel cut). Hyundai really made it feel like you drive a combustion engine in N E-Shift.

This car is amazing

Hopefully the Alpine hot hatch will have a similar system to this. Hyundai have set the bar high for future electric hot hatches!!

I think Hyundai did a great job with all N cars and this one is no exception. I dont like electric cars but this N shift mode really is impressive. The way it rev limits and climbs steady if on high gear low speed. Wish to drive one someday!

E-Shift is a great idea. Car is way too big for a UK hatchback though. Maybe an Ioniq 3 N will be a more practical size and a bit cheaper! They should even put an "N mode" into the settings which gives you a special skin and customisable feature list to very quickly tweak the settings important to you.

I want to try it out🥴👍 if i have to pick a ev, it would be this. It is so funny

They were pretty close to create combustion engines and manual gearbox.
