That's right Sam, nobody gives two thoughts about what can happen until it happens, then its too late! I understand many locals can barely make ends meet and simply can't afford the proper gear (or any gear). For the fortunate ones, we should budget protective gear into the total cost of a bike.

You’re correct John. We are very fortunate, but most expat will disregard the proper protection gear after watching locals driving around without safety equipment ( I’m guilty of it) but I have to remind myself to wear proper equipment all the time . There is a guy here in Dumaguete who donate 1000s of helmets annually to the less fortunate. I Met him on facebook, His name is GOLDFINGER. I actually met him in person last year when I handed him my donation to his cause.

Riding in the PH is very tempting but way dangerous, no ambulance is going to pick you up and then comes the hospital/money drill. Yamaha Tri-city is for me the only compromise in scooters, otherwise a bajaj tricycle. A Shoei or any high end helmet is money well spent, also the boots, armour jacket and pants easily a 2K investment. With scooters watch closely your tire pressure and loading.

My advice is - do not get on a bike unless you are a willing hood ornament. They way they drive there is crazy. They have never heard of turn signals or proper lanes. LOL. They see a free lane and do not care if it is going the opposite direction. Oh come on - you have never driven a clutch?

Sorry, could not help laugh about your accidents - clearly lack of practice/skill. Im just about to retire there fulltime and want a bike (not a scooter). I've road bikes on and off my whole life. To me, it is not a real bike if less than 1000cc. With control of bike via clutch and power you would be surprised how much better control you have of situations. I know is not practical to have 1000cc in Philippines but I hope for a 250-400cc clutch bike. In Oz, we call automatic bikes "Scooters" and clutch bike, "Bikes". One thing I will be getting before trip will be an airbag bike jacket - I will take everything I can to play it safe in the Philippines

I should have describe the accident a lot better. You would have laughed a lot more. When I looked back at it I’m still laughing. It was no laughing matter at the time. Wait I’ll describe it. 1st accident. Remember it was a 110cc a small bike. It had been raining and I’m going maybe 15mph in a commercial/ subdivision in Angeles city. Going around a curve hit a wet patch started to skid sideways as im going I was able to use my left leg and stomp it in the ground and keep the bike from laying on my left leg. as I hit the light pole I was able to lift the bike up. Scratched my left leg and hit the pole with my shoulder. So Im standing there and all the bystanders see this. And said to them. I’m ok I’m ok. They all looked at me in shock. Then I drove my bike away. More embarrassed than hurt. 2) time I’m following my ex gf she’s in a trike cuz she’s afraid to ride with me. She’s constantly looking back at me to make sure I’m ok. They go down this steep hill and I followed. There was sand ok some rocks. I popped the clutch flipped over. As I’m going over I see my ex gf eyes in horror. I flipped over and landed on my head. lay there for a moment and stood up and said I’m ok. As she ran to me in shock screaming are you ok. That’s the moment I realized I have to stop this. And the 3rd accident wasn’t so dramatic. I just skidded into a small ditch with no one around. Decided to never drive a clutch again and walked the bike back to her house and never saw that bike again. I’m just glad the 3times I crashed I was going very slow. Anyway no more clutch for me. 😂😂😂

@@SAMLAMB lol Definitely a bike accident is not funny at the time. I had two accidents. First I crossed light rail tracks in the wet. Lost all traction/control. My legs start swinging everywhere to stop falling. Ended up falling just as the bike stopped. I was so focused on trying to keep balanced I had not realised I stopped. So the bike just fell over. 2nd time again in the wet. The truck in front stopped very suddenly. I had the choice of laying the bike down or hitting the flatbed at chest height. Naturally there was concern of internal injury and concussion so was taken to hospital. I was in the Navy so the hospital gave them a msg I went under truck on my bike. 5 days later I go back onboard to find my kit packed up and someone in my bunk. Lol They had assumed that I was done for. Lol

@ReadySetGo113 woah. Glad you made it through the 2nd accident. Since I’ve been riding a scooter really haven’t had any accidents ( knock on wood) I only use my scooter for short drives like 30min or an hour. And very seldom go over 40mph. But sooner or later I’ll have to buy a small truck or car for personal transportation. If I want to drive long distances.
