How To: Wrap & Turn in Garter Stitch

This tutorial video focuses on working a standard Wrap and Turn (W&T) short row on garter stitch fabric.
W&T - move working yarn to front between the needles, slip next st purlwise from LH to RH needle, move working yarn to back between needles (creating a collar around the slipped st), place a marker if desired, transfer the st back to the LH needle purlwise. Turn work. Move working yarn to back between sts with the RS facing (as to
knit the next st).
If you'd like to knit along to practice, here's what I did:
Cast on 36 sts (I just used a standard long tail cast on).
Knit 3 or 4 rows in garter (knit every st, every row)
Begin Short Rows:
- Row 1: Knit to 3 sts before the end, W&T.
- Row 2: Knit to 3 sts before the end, W&T.
- Row 3: Knit to 3 sts before the previous turning point (before gap), W&T.
- Row 4: Knit to 3 sts before the previous turning point (before gap), W&T.
- Repeat [Rows 3 and 4] 3 more times.
Process wrapped sts as a knit stitch. Resume working even.

Thank you so much for this video! I’m new to knitting and stumbled across a pattern that calls for W&T but I had no idea what was the purpose. They are baby pants and need shaping at the back to leave room for the nappy. So watching your video helped making sense of it (and once again made me realise how clever knitting is) and learned how it’s done. It’s perfect practice before starting on a project :-)

Purl Soho needs to do an updated video for the Half + Half Triangles wrap, applicable to that pattern specifically. The pattern has gone viral, and many knitters are having trouble figuring out what to do in the short row W&T sections of the pattern. One improvement would be to have the sample used in the video knitted in garter stitch, like the wrap itself.

Hello, thank you so much for the great tutorial on the W&T in garter stitch. I wonder if you could help... I have to introduce a 2nd colour on my wrap and turn... I have 25 stitches of main yarn but then need to slip 3, K19 sts in 2nd yarn then W&T leaving last 3 stitches unknit. I have to do this for 6 rows, cut 2nd yarn and then pick up main yarn again. Could you tell me how I should keep main yarn rising up the rows so it's ready for the switch when I have the 3 unused stitches at each end. Oh dear I hope I've made that clear enough :-)

Hi Lisa! I'm so glad this tutorial helped you get started! Without seeing the instructions for your particular pattern I can't say for sure what the intent is - you may want to reach out to the designer to see if they can offer a suggestion but I think probably the way I would handle it is to join a second skein of yarn of the original color to resume the short rows in the main color once the 6 rows of the contrast color are completed. It does mean extra ends to weave in but I'm not sure it would be easy to carry the main color up the short rows. Since you're stopping short of the previous turn point on each row I can't picture how you would carry it along. I'm sorry I don't have a more definitive answer but I think the joining a second ball of the MC for the short rows may be your best bet. Good luck!

  • @TheUnapologeticKnitter

    @TheUnapologeticKnitter

Hi Gwen - while I’m not overly familiar with Portuguese knitting, I suspect you would simply work it in the opposite fashion. When you get to the turning point, move your working yarn to the back, slip the stitch, move the yarn to the front again, slip the stitch back to the left hand needle, and finally move the working yarn to the back one last time. Then when you turn the work the yarn will be in the front ready to continue purling. Give it a try and see if that works. Good luck and happy knitting (or purling)!

Hello - can I have some help please from The Unapologetic Knitter. I am knitting the Purl Soho wrap which is a garter stitch garment. As you can see some of the comments below on your video refer to this Purl Soho wrap. I have done my wrap and turns exactly as you have said, bringing the yarn forward prior to slipping the stitch then yarn to the back and put the slip stitch back, turn work, move yarn to back to carry on with garter stitch. I now have no idea how to pick up the wraps as the pattern dictates. A knitter below posted another link to picking up the wraps but this does not allow for the yarn being brought to the front first as I have done. I really could do with some help if possible as I definitely need to pick up the wraps. Kind regards

  • @TheUnapologeticKnitter

Hi Alison - when I work short rows in garter stitch, I don't pick up and knit the wrap with the stitch, I just leave the wrap in place and keep knitting. In my opinion, it's kind of unnecessary to pick up the wrap since garter is so squishy. The wraps get hidden in the ridges of garter stitch. If you would like assistance with the method that Purl Soho used specifically, I recommend contacting them directly. Unfortunately I've never knit their wrap so I can't offer guidance on their instructions. Good luck and happy knitting!
