Knitting Short Rows (Wrap And Turn without holes!)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Knitting Short Rows (Wrap And Turn without holes!)
First of all, what is a short row? I'll answer that in today's video, it's seen a knitting patterns and if there's not illustrations to show off the splendour of this technique it can be confusing.
BUT we don't want to create short rows with holes and loops of yarn crossing over where they shouldn't be, so we use the wrap and turn knitting technique that I'll show you today.
Watch all the way through as I'll show you how to approach the wrap and turn on the next row too.... that is what makes all the difference!

    Dearest Hannah, I learned how to knit just a few years ago and I love it so much. I have relied upon you tube many times to show me how to do stitches that I wasn't taught originally as I try to tackle more and more complicated patterns. Your style of teaching is wonderful and your videos are so well done. Thank you for your contribution. Thank you for your delightful demeanor. I will rely upon you to teach me other new things as I progress with my knitting. This short row video and the one for purling short rows will help me make a pair of slippers. I may let you know how they turn out. Please take care and be well.

    This work wrap instruction I have seems a little different than what’s here. “Insert right needle between the 4th and 5th sts on left needle; k1, drawing a longer than usual st, k4, pass one strand of long st over the other 4 sts to make wrap” It sounds like a decrease and wrap, while also keeping enough yarn to make it look like I weaved/stitched it through the work.

  • @KnitWithHannah

    @KnitWithHannah

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Melissa, this isn't actually a 'wrap and turn', it's a wrap so that the yarn is visible, more like a feature so that the yarn is creating the pattern, not shaping the knitting fabric, like wrap and turn does. Also it doesn't look like decreasing, as you'll have the same number of stitches by the end of the row I think. This style of feature is sometimes done by slipping stitches too, like here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iGGHo6WjZNy7mtY.html Happy knitting 🧶

    Hi Hannah, I just found your Knitting Short Rows video and wanted to say thanks; it's so helpful, and the work is so neat. I have one question: at about 3mins 45 seconds, you "Knit across the wrap", and as I said earlier, it's wonderful, but what would I do if I wanted to continue with short rows for a while longer. Should I still "Knit across the wrap" and then continue with the short rows, or do I not "knit across the wrap" until I'm ready to recommence full-length rows? I look forward to hearing back from you.

  • @KnitWithHannah

    @KnitWithHannah

    2 ай бұрын

    Hi, the knit and wrap would only be knitted across if the pattern says to knit further on the next row going in the same direction. A lot of short row patterns either reduce or increase the number of stitches and continue wrapping and turning a few times to make a specific effect, but the pattern will be telling you which to do. Whenever you knit over the wrap for the first time, so the technique I suggest here to prevent the hole. Happy knitting 🧶

  • @annaw2812
    @annaw28123 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the clear instructions! I'm following a pattern that says to slipstitch and turn... is this the same as wrap and turn? If not, can I wrap and turn instead?

  • @KnitWithHannah

    @KnitWithHannah

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it’s similar, just use the technique to knit the wrap and slipped stitch together as I showed here, and it’ll be the same. The only difference I think is that the unknitted slipped stitch is on a different needle as you turn.

    I came to the comments for the answer to this question too!!! I’m knitting with a tiny needle and sock weight yarn. Will check the other vids on your channel.

    Thanks novice here Do the stitches you knit after the turn count as another row?

    The pattern will say turn and knit back, or something like that, that’s what creates the shaping. the next written row will likely be the same stitch as you started the wrap and turn row with. Happy knitting 🧶

    Hi, You could be knitting the wrap and the original stitches which would give you an extra stitch from the wrap. Hope it's worked out for you. 🧶

    Still confused as to when I knit the rest of the row.Pattern says k7 w&t 2nd row k am I just on the first 7 or straight across😤

    It can depend on who's writing the pattern, as to whether the returning across the row is included in the instructions for w&t or written as a 2nd row. If you're knitting 7, then w&t, you'll need to go back across those 7 stitches. If the 'row 2' says knit 7, that's your row 2. If not, it's assumed that you've already knitted those 7. Row 3 and onward will also give you clues, depending on the pattern. You'll have a better idea of whether you're increasing in the same place again or on the opposite side for different shaping reasons. Perhaps you have different stitch patterns, like purling and ribbing for different rows too.

    How is it that the stitches still look knitted on Perl side when knitting in garter stitch? That’s what is happing in my work?

  • @KnitWithHannah

    @KnitWithHannah

    hi Mary, you're still making stitches in the same way, the previous stitch is being discarded to either the front, if you're purling or back, if you're knitting. So, when you're moving the needles from front to back and purling every row it will look like knitted garter stitch. This video will help explain it too: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qIWhu6OnktvgZJc.html Happy Knitting!

    Thx for ur suggestions and the link. But that does not address my problem. I’m knitting short rows and on the last return row I have very loose stitches over the t& w stitches ( the holes). Is there a way to send you a photo. I tried to tighten up and other methods and to no avail.

    @@marylovie7628 I'd definitely make sure you do use the trick I suggest for returning along the next row, but it is really down to practice. Sometimes tightening actually makes the stitches bigger, because of the way the yarn carries across the row.

    If you have a second row of the wrap and turn do you still knit 2 together?

  • @KnitWithHannah

    @KnitWithHannah

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes, multiple wraps and turns will stop at slightly different places along the row, to give shape, so if you're wrapping and turning multiple times knit up the wrap with each repeat. Happy knitting!

    Hi, Judith. I don't know. I've not come across that before. I'm wondering if it's a typo. Always take a look at the abbreviations list in your pattern - there should be a list of what the letters mean, either at the beginning or end of the pattern or if you're reading a pattern from a book it'll likely be in one big list somewhere. happy knitting! 😍

    Do you always have to wrap and turn? I am a beginner and the pattern I am knitting just says “turn”

  • @KnitWithHannah

    @KnitWithHannah

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Candice! If you just turn you’ll likely end up with a bit of a hole, wrapping avoids that. It will depend on the pattern, whether the possibility of holes are allowed for on consequent rows. But in my experience using the method in this video gives the best results. Happy knitting! 🧶

    It's entirely dependent on how you'd like it to look. But right at the side of the neck, yes it won't really show, so go for it as you are and add more abbreviations and techniques when you're ready. Hope it goes well! happy knitting. 😍

    This is a fantastic idea very clear instructions. However how do I avoid those holes on my knitting. The instructions say knit to last 3 three stitches then turn then I do the purl row where it then says purl to last 6 stitches then do w&t. So I never get to the first w&t. So I can’t do what you said to avoid those holes. Can you please help??????

    @@KnitWithHannah I have never knitted like this before. Actually this is the first time I have heard of this w&t. After several rows (I am Trying g to shape shoulders) 6 rows of w&t’s row 7 knot to end knitting each wrap with its corresponding stitch. I am confused but I trying to knit a dress for my granddaughter. Thank you for your reply.

    That 7th row looks like it will even everything out, so you'll not have the holes. Watch this one too, for a bit more information, so you can see wrapping on a purl row and returning on the next row: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d2d11aWsc66vhrg.html Happy knitting! 😍

    If you turn without the wrap you’ll have a hole in your work which will show itself in the next row. So a wrap is the best option. Happy knitting 🧶
