How To Tint Windows | Ford Transit Camper Window Tinting Guide [20% VLT Window Film] | 003
In this transit camper van project episode, I tint the rear windows of my Transit Minibus.
Here's what I used in this video:
20% VLT Window Tinting Film - ebay.us/JkqySy
Heat Gun - ebay.us/KOOw0l
I was worried that privacy may be an issue in our Transit camper van, especially when you may be parking in more public areas.
We are going to fit blinds or some sort of window coverings to block out light at night but thought that we would like to be able to sit in the camper without feeling like you are in a goldfish bowl.
Researching tints for the windows, I was worried about the interior being too dark. We want to visit some beautiful places and look out without feeling like we were wearing sunglasses all the time.
However, the wisdom seems to be that even dark tints don’t do that when you’re inside and acclimated to it, but they do stop people looking in unless you’ve got a light on inside and it's dark out.
We have had the experience of applying window tints before, and are dab hands at using the soapy water to make the film easy to move, then squeegee the water out.
I chose a middle ground 20% VLT (visual light transmission) window tint, this seems dark enough for privacy but not too dark. Bear in mind, some would refer to this as 80% tinted windows.
Not all of the windows were easy to do, and I did end up with a few blemishes here and there. But overall it has worked out very well, we’ll have to see how it is when we start using the van, but at the moment it definitely seems bright enough inside.

Sorry I realise this video is a year old but how did you do the sliding windows? Just doing mine now and finding the sliding is lifting the film material.

I don't remember having an issue with the slding window. I'm not sure how I would stop it lifting, maybe your seal is tight or something. They do the windows in car doors which lift up and down so it should be possible to make it work. Good luck.

Hi! How did you get all the excess water out of the bottom seal, it’s keeping my sliding Hiace window tint from drying. I don’t have the nice black border on them either so you can see all the way up and down to the seals 🤔 Any tricks? Thanks!

It can be a real problem. You could try using a heat gun or a hair dryer to get rid of any dampness. It does make it alot easier if there is a border on you windows. I do have a couple of dodgy bits, sometimes you can only do your best. Overall I am very pleased with my results. Good luck.

@@SPANNERRASH thank you! I’d only done one window and ended up scrapping it and improvising a bit. I added a 2” border of tint to the top and bottom - they’ve already dried nicely since not as much water was required! Next, I plan to layer the full sheet of tint over those, but not all the way to the top behind the seals, allowing more water out into the felt sitting at the bottom (instead of filling up the window tray). Hopefully it works!

I get you're doing DIY but there's quite a bit of contamination in there, you gotta squeegee the window. Is there any local companies doing tint?
