How To Fit Camper Van Insulation and Soundproofing | DIY Transit Camper Conversion | 005
In this episode, I start to insulate the rear of my Transit Minibus.
Here's what I used in this video:
Sound deadening: ebay.us/YlF8Iy
Plastic insulation: ebay.us/dAM7r1
Primer: ebay.us/6K8YZn
Paint: ebay.us/u7AcUB
Having removed all of the lining from my Transit Minibus camper conversion, I now needed to insulate the sides and roof. I am going to insulate the voids in the sides and roof of the van using some soundproofing and some shredded plastic. These are just left empty by the manufacturer, so have no insulation whatsoever.
I use two main products for the insulation. First I stick sound deadening to the outer skin of the van. Then I fill any gap between that and the lining with recycled plastic insulation.
The sound deading material is 10mm of foam with the inside having a aluminium sheet to reflect heat and sound, and the other has adhesive so that it will stick. Besides sound deadening the cover does provide some insulation so it will help.
The shredded plastic insulation seems to be a new product that replaces the fibreglass that used to be used for homes and other areas. The fibreglass used to be a real problem with itching and you had to be careful not to inhale the dust, whereas the plastic is a lot safer to use. The insulation ratings seem similar so that isn’t a worry. At first, I found that the plastic seemed quite expensive from the Caravan and Camper equipment suppliers. Then I noticed my local DIY store sells the product at a really good price.
I painted the original lining panels so that I could reuse them. I used a good primer and covered it with a satin white water-based paint. They will mostly be behind cabinets and seating so they should be fine cosmetically.
