I live up in the mountains by lake Tahoe and O'Reilly's I paid $182 Napa wanted 320 so I went ahead and bought the one from O'Reilly's I didn't know what else to do it's been snowing and I need to get this fixed so I can get out of here where I'm at is not able to get a tow truck in I'm at my new cabin. Also I'm disabled and it's charging me to get up once I get down I have a rope tried to the top rail of the suburban so I can get up but I was planning on doing it from the top anyway now mine I did crawl under there and mine has a hard line so I don't know if that makes a difference on The cutting or the price and like I said it's an 01 thanks for your correspondence

I was stunned by your repair video! You have done it and filmed it just like I would have done but probably better except I would have secured the plate differently with some JB weld but your alum tape seems to work well. I hope it holds up over time but I would check it periodically okay. I also have a flex fuel suburban 2002 and I did not even know it! I inherited it from my older brother after he left this world. I'm sure a lot of people don't like the idea of cutting a hole but after replacing several fuel pumps this is an awesome idea I'm going to do it to mines before my fuel pump goes out so that when it does I'm not on the side of the road stuck out thanks for the video great work

Hey Brian, Sounds like you are pro active person. The other things that can go bad is that fuel sensor on the pump. Can you imagine having to pull down the tank just to replace a bad sensor? This was so much easier than I anticipated the job would be. Thanks for commenting. Let me know how it goes.

I just want to say, from a repair shop, we replace more Suburban/Tahoe/Yukon fuel pumps because of LEAKS than we do failures. PLEASE keep this in mind when you have sparks flying while cutting metal. We aren't talking just fire, we are talking potential explosion then fire.

That is a really good point. My 2008 2500 suburban had a leak on top of the tank. I took it to a shop for repair. Not going to get sparks anywhere near that. This 2002 1500 had no leak. Made sure to smell for any gas leak. Thanks for commenting and looking out for us.

I used a larger diameter wooden dowel. Using a screwdriver or anything else is just adding to the potential of a spark. A hardwood dowel is best. Thanks

Thanks for this very helpful video. Like yours my tank was almost full and trying to drop the tank by myself in the dirt was not an option I wanted to do. But with the split bench seat in the rear it's not as easy as your 4 Capt chair setup. I use my Suburban as a camper and the full flat floor is better for my air mattress. I'd been getting the dreaded P0300 code and chasing all the suggestions on KZread and was even looking for a good used engine. The new pump eliminated all the misfire issues and feels like I found 100hp, as well as going from 10mpg back to 16-17mpg towing my boat. And the rough idle is gone to the point you have to look at the tach to know its running. A couple tips: cut the hatch a little bigger and use a good dielectric grease in the plugs. Plus I vacuumed out the dirt, sprayed everything with diluted Dawn, then hosed it clean before starting. Then applied Nut Buster on the lock ring overnight. Only issue was disconnecting the hoses since there's no way to loosen their clamps. Used real HVAC metallic duct tape and pop riveted 2 sheet metal tabs to hold it in place and make it waterproof.

Some good information in this. Surprised to hear how many things the pump effected.

If you have a salvage yard near you, cut a section bigger than the cut out you plan to make in your vehicle. Then you can pop rivet or use short sheet metal screws and some non hardening sealant (such as 3M 08568) to have an easily removeable access hatch

Did this same repair to my 04 Avalanche. NJ truck so I spent a good 2 hours banging the ring off the top of the pump. Two of the 3 lines also rusted in the quick disconnects so I had to cut them off and press on new quick disconnects... Got it all done and repaired in one day but boy was my back hurting at the end!

Great work, always hose it down first and even throw a wet towel o n top of gas tank as PREVENTATIVE medicide! 😎

Definitely trying this out on my tahoe. My fuel been cutting off and on but about a year ago I had the shop replaced my fuel pump 🤦‍♂️ I'll have to really see if my truck has gone bad or time to get rid of it. Thanks for video! Very helpful

Hey Xannis, The shop checked my pump and said it was ok. Both volume and pressure. I went ahead and replaced it because it would just stop. Has worked fine ever since. Glad I did it this way.

I’ve got a 2002 Chevy suburban with flex fuel. I did the same thing to mine yesterday. Worked great, but instead of taping the hole shut I used panel bond to hold the panel shut and before I used panel bond I used Rust oleum spray paint to help try to keep it from rusting. Plus it’s watertight.

Not sure about others but for mine I feel there was no degradation in structure. Floor is solid.

For those who have a gas leak, electric metal cutting shears will work. The reason i have also done it this way 8s because i live in the salt belt and just had the tank out about a year ago and definately dont think it will handle another removal and installation thanks to rust. What happened is my sensor in top of the tank decided to shit the bed on me so i cut this hatch to change it. Truck runs fine but thanks to big brother i have to get it inspected every year, check engine light wsd on

Good alternative. I would not want to be using a grinder to be cutting anywhere near a gas leak.

I just put a new pump in my 04 Tahoe , and it would be so much easier if there was a hatchway door . I dropped the tank out and ( it sucked a little lol ) did it that way . Nice video though, thanks.

I have the pickup so you can unbolt the box and lift it a bit, much easier than dropping the tank

I'm two days away from having surgery on my right shoulder and my fuel pump went out in my 2004 Yukon. I'm gonna gitter done your style. I have done all the TS and it all indicates it's the fuel pump. I'll let you know how it went. Thanks from the left coast of whOregon...

That's exactly what I did, cut a door in the floorboard. After the nightmare of dropping the tank the first time, I wasn't gonna do that again. I've had this 2002 Suburban for about 8 years, and have had to replace the fuel pump 5 times. I'm so tired of it, I think I'll just rig up an outside fuel pump the next time one goes out. These things just don't last.

Yeah I'm getting ready to do my 01 suburban and I was going to cut a hole but I didn't know where the cut so that really helped me a lot I don't know if the old one is the same but I'm going to check it out and I was wondering what's the price on that pump because I'm here and all kinds of weird prices if anybody can answer that that'd be great and I'm going to start this tomorrow morning thanks again bye

I paid about $60 for the flex fuel one and about $12 for the new ring. I think I posted the link in the description but the regular pump is about the same price

Hey Michael, Thanks for commenting. I don't think I would do anything different. (except steam clean that filthy carpet) I cut that hatch perfect and if I ever have to replace the sensor or pump then I can just cut small area under the seat without removing the seats. Just would need to be careful not to spill gas. Truck is working great now no issues with it cutting out any longer.

Yes. As long as I have no gas leak and cannot smell gas. LOL Would hate to have those sparks if I had a fuel leak. Other than that it was not only smart but saved a ton of work, time and money

I like it. I have a 08 Tahoe and need to change the fuel pump. The book labor say's 2hr. I am gonna try doing it like the video.🤔🤔🙄

Had my old 1999 suburban fuel pump go out and had to cut into the read deck near back gate. It failed to start twice due to no fuel pressure. Now my 2002 Chevy suburban doing the same thing. Thankfully it sits in my driveway when it fails. Going to check that relay and pressure regulator first before having to cut into flooring. Thanks for putting this out. Do you have any video on the water thermostat?

@@DansEverythingOutdoors Kinda odd. I put in a new Oriellys thermostat and now motor does not heat up. Usually between 120 to 160 degrees. Set for 85 degrees. Did you do one for the Knock Sensor?

@@rogermerritt6470 If motor is not reaching temps as normally would then the thermostat is likely stuck open. It needs to regulate temp by closing to warm and opening to cool. I did have a knock sensor problem at one time and did replace it but did not do a video. It turned out to be a bare wire intermittently grounding out on the block.

How did you determine where to make your cuts? Did you follow some measurements or did i miss that part?

I looked on line for where it was supposed to be then took an educated guess. That is why I started with just a cut and then peeked into it to see if it was where it should have been.

I live up in Snow country in the Sierras so we got by the snow this last week so I didn't work on the car yet but I started yesterday cleaning out some areas I had a bear break one of my windows out so I've been cleaning up glass but I talked to one of my friends down in Southern Cal actually the guy that gave me the suburban and he called his mechanic and his mechanic said to bang on the tank and so just a little while ago I banged on the tank with the end of a shovel handle and fired right up so I don't know if it's going to last or not but considering I need to get out of here and take care of some business and some doctors I'm happy so thanks for the information but I didn't cut the hole and I'm still baffled about you paying $60 and I paid $182 for this pump I never even opened the box yet so I should get my money back but I'm going to investigate why it cost so much compared to your price I don't know where you're at either so anyway thanks again bye

Hey Rod. Laughing at your story. I can see how banging on it would work in a stuck someplace and need it to work situation. I have done this before and also good for a starter that is not working. The reason your pump may cost more could be standard (not flex) type pump but most likely an older year vehicle. Not sure but shop around. What is it when searching the web or Amazon? Sorry about the bear breaking your window. Maybe you left some salmon in the back seat. LOL

TIP run a water hose up between the body and tank if youre going to be doing any cutting and flush it out to remove any fuel. and dont cut deep

Hi Walter. No. They are not the same pump. I don't remember all the details of what is different between them but the connector on the flex has 4 wires and the standard only has 2 or 3 wires. Don't remember for sure but best to try to get the exact type for your vehicle.

Is this fuel pump with built in pressure regulator?

Thanks 😊 in the future use some sort of metal glue with gorilla glue weather proof tape vs 3m to seal it back so that way no air gets back into the cabin! But what you should've done was just make it an actual door since you cut it! Think about it 😂

I did this on a trailblazer.The line off the pump was leaking. I used an air chisel, no sparks.

Great idea. A nibbler would also work or a metal shears. Just wear good gloves. Glad you were smart enough to not use a grinder.

When trying to remove that metal ring you need to use a brass or copper

You are correct. However no gas was exposed and no fumes so was not too worried

Honda Odyssey Vans had of around the same years had a pannel that you can just easily unbolt to change the pump ( i changed one). Honestly wish GM just made them the same way too😕

Hi @MartinHentges, I took me about 3 hrs but I did it over two days because I had very limited time to shoot the video

Before cutting or replacing ANYTHING. Do yourself a favor, find the fuel pump ground connector - driver's side behind the front wheel. Remove the 13 mm bolt sand down the surface on the frame and the contacts and reseat. Would have saved myself a few hours of cutting through the floor board. Removing the old rusted fuel pump. Wresting to install replacement, which was NOT the exact fit. Although, AutoZone sells it as such. Returning and getting the correct pump. Installing and troubleshooting why it still would not start. Come to find out, the issue was always a ground issue. Old pump worked fine when I applied power to it on a bench test. Could have saved @ $200 and hours of frustration. Takes all of 5 minutes to clean the ground contact and test..... Do yourself a favor.

Depends on the brand and where you are purchasing. Dealer - Expensive, Auto Parts store - Better, Online - Best. Now that I have the hatch in place I am not worried about having to replace again. I purchased mine online and just checked today. Still same low price. Check my description for this video for more details. I have link to one on Amazon.

I just wanted to say I had to leave my place up there cuz the snow got too deep for my disabilities I have but banging on the tank only worked for a day and then I cut the panel I put the new fuel pump in and it's been working great ever since I'm really glad you had that video for me to watch it helped tremendously thanks again for everything and talk to you again bye

I agree. I originally thought of this idea because my Nissan Maxima has the pump accessible from under the rear seat.

It's not much harder to just drop the tank. Disconnect 6 lines on outside of tank somewhat trivial. Then undo the two straps and as you drop it disconnect the electrical connectors on the pump. It's easier than removing a seat, rug, cutting a hole, etc.

Next time you drop a tank after jacking up the vehicle on a driveway or inside your garage at home, make a video. That would be fun to watch.

I just did mine last week and I dropped the tank just one side of it and I lifted the truck from both sides of the frame and stretched the suspension and left the tires barely on the ground. Removed the spare tire and boom you can reach over the axle lol. Don’t cut your floor please

I did the same thing on my 98 XJ8. Definitely easier than dropping the tank without a proper lift. It's best to use metal shears rather than an angle grinder. Sparks and possible fuel vapors are a bad combination.

It only takes an hour and a half to drop the tank. your only going to be doing it every 100k or so.

This is true but sometimes it's necessary, I've dropped tanks before but I live in an apt where I can't just be dropping the tank. I can definitely cut a patch and swap it out on the hush

😂 Stupid for doing it this way. My Evap lines also had a leak. But I put more value on my vehicles. Wasn’t that hard to drop a tank and fix right. Best of luck

Alll kinds of stupied cut of wheel spark plus pressurized fuel equals boom should have use some air sheers then the vacuum it can suck up fuel fumes and make the vacuum a bomb then a screwdriver to open the lockring is a noo cuz it can cause sparks yeah nothing happened but there definitely was a chance a possible lethal chance and that tank is easy as shit to drop i bet i would have it down before u got your seat moved carpet and cut the thing
