2005 Chevy Avalanche Fuel Pump Access

Does your Chevy Truck or SUV crank on the 2nd time but not the first? It may be the check valve or fuel pressure regulator that is built into the newer style GM fuel pumps. I know early 2000 model GM 5.3's had the fuel pressure regulator near the fuel rails, but that was not the case with my 2005 truck. In researching the exact dimensions on where to cut this panel, it seems you get a few different answers. Hopefully my video will clear this up for people not wanting to drop the tank or remove the rear seats. To get to this point in my video, it took about 10 minutes at most. I don’t have a lot of time on my hands and I refuse to spend hard earned money on stuff when I’m perfectly capable. Did I cut corners? Literally, you bet! That’s the entire point of my channel! I’ll seal it up tighter than a flex seal screen door boat by the time I put it back together for the clipboard warrior type out there! #CloseEnough

But it was perfect for me. There’s no danger to it. I don’t get the clipboard warriors that are all up in arms about it.

I just did a 2002 tank drop. 4 hose clamps on the fill side on the tank, 2 straps with 1 bolt each holding the super lite 28.1+gal plastic tank, 5 squeeze tube connections(7 total counting the pump), 2 bolts on the vape can(has 3 of the squeeze connectors). Using the stocked jack for tire changing on the drivers side back, on the ground. You also can clean the tank and pour it out. The new pump will remind you to clean out the tank or it will void the warranty. Fuel is about 8lbs per gallon, you can get a hose in the fill hole once the fill hose is removed from the tank. Remove the neg battery terminal before you start.

For those talking about how horrible it must look. Link to the picture below. I purposefully didn’t blend the carpet at the top so you can still see the razor knife lines. Down near the bottom to the right, I took a brush and “blended” the carpet together. If you don’t take a dull beaver or a chainsaw to your carpet and use a sharp knife, you seriously can’t even tell. I’m finding that there’s a lot of people that REALLY care about the look of the carpet under their rear seat in nearly 20 year old pickup trucks. Also, please be sure to use aluminum tape on the metal seams to prevent fumes from coming in the cab. This is a measure to prevent EXHAUST fumes from coming into the cab, not gas fumes. The fuel pump is sealed at the tank if you installed it correctly. Thanks everyone! drive.google.com/file/d/1cjLIWjE7acZpl_gplX4k8apDNzSAL7vt/view?usp=drivesdk

  • @closeenoughmechanics

I debated cutting wheel and/or oscillating saw. I went this route because it was a late project one evening and the one cut off wheel I had for my high speed grinder was too short to make an effective cut given the contours of the floor. But, would have been the more appropriate tool for the job if I had a less worn out disk on me that day, indeed. Thanks for pointing that out to folks. You certainly would not have to worry about cutting too deep.

rodger roy I’m not worried about a hole in the floor of a 20 year old vehicle. I’m worried about the 20 year old fuel line connections crumbling when I drop the tank. I know there are eclipses and rare cases where everything goes perfectly smoothly for everyone and never has issues, just never seems to go my way! Plus, it makes it easier to change in 10 years when this one fails. If you know how to use a razor knife, you don’t even see the “hole” once you fold the car part and padding down. There is no hole, there are tiny seems in the carpet nearly impossible to see. This video is for folks that want to save time and aren’t particular about small seams in their carpet under their back seat.

@@closeenoughmechanics There is only one steel line going to the tank. From there it is plastic. The rest is plastic. The only difficult one is the fuel line which sits in front and above the tank behind a cross member. The only thing that may break is maybe a release tab. These lines are plastic so they are flexible. If you actually tried it you would see how easy it would have been.

Have I dropped the tank and done it the long way? Yup. Many times. Would I buy a vehicle with a tiny undetectable seam in the carpet with easy access to the fuel pump? HECK YEAH! Plus, why would I get rid of a vehicle that is now easier to maintain now? :)

Then pick up a camera and show us how YOU would replace the fuel pump on a Chevy Avalanche. Or STFU. Members of the Chevy Avalanche Club of America overwhelmingly suggest you fabricate an access panel to change out your fuel pump on your Avalanche as they are prone to failure. I replaced mine in a similar manner 6 years ago on my 2002 Avalanche with 300,000 miles and it worked like a charm. Get on your back, in your driveway in January and remove your fuel tank if you want...I'll stand right outside the truck, comfortably and basically change my fuel pump as quick as it takes to replace the alternator.

@@closeenoughmechanics Well I can see doing this on something like a jaguar where you have to separate the frame from the body to remove the gas tank but. This isn't a hard task at all removing the tank to replace the fuel pump on any Chevy truck. The only difficult part maybe is separating the feed line tucked in behind a cross member above the tank but that isn't very difficult either. To put a hole in the floor to do this is dumb. Now you have a hole in the floor. Which can lead to you breathing in exhaust. Or make it easier for mice to get in. I'm not sure how the lines are for a flex fuel which I just realized now but I am sure the procedure is pretty much the same.

@@rodgerroy8090 nothing aluminum tape won’t fix for the leaks. It’s not a hole when you tape it up proper. I used a razor knife to slice the carpet, not a dull beaver. Also, I’m not really worried about the nearly undetectable slits in my carpet under the backseat of my $5000 truck. The point of this video was saving time. I’ve done MANY the “correct” way and a lot of times you break fuel lines and the often dry rotted plastic clips which costs you more time and more parts store runs. This is for people that don’t have that kind of time and wouldn’t mind future easy access without fumes.
