when you come here to learn how to do the vibrato trick but instead you watch a tutorial on how to breathe

Almost as if breathing has something to do with vibrato 🤯
being a choir vocalist, watching your videos make me happy
I naturally do vibratos, but as soon as I think about it, I have a bit of trouble going to do it again. So I try to play my ocarina and clean my mind 😊
As soon as you said " breath with your diaphragm" I said " I know where this is going lay on your back and get a book"
I did it!!!! *THANK YOU!* Took several weeks of barely getting results every now and then and today.... boom! I was about to give up. 😥 Now I'm wondering, where did you find the music? I found a couple of amazing grace sheets and tabs but they aren't very well done. I am learning piano and I can use early pieces but I might have to modify and I'm not sure I can do that well. I'd rather get good ocarina music if I can find it. And did I say THANK you?? I read and viewed and bought everything I could find about the subject but your tutorial is the only one (I found) that really deals with vibrato rather than modifying breathing. And while both can be useful, of course, this was what I wanted to learn.
For anyone that it may apply to, such as martial artists or people who practice meditation, use your belly breathing. That's what he's talking about when he's saying breathe with your diaphragm. Use the same breathing that you were taught while you were learning your katas, or that you learned for your meditation. If you breathe shallowly, such as in chest breathing, you'll get light-headed and run out of air. For any of you martial artists, keep in mind, that many of the ancient Masters also learned a non-martial art of some type to round themselves out. I personally think that this is a wonderful art to learn in general. Learning an instrument, will help you to master yourself.
This was actually very helpful , i know it sounds stupid but like a year ago i started feeling like i cant take a deep breath , then i started really focusing on my breathing and i never realized that breathing with upper portion was wrong , now that i started breathing "with my belly" it really feels like im back to normal . So yeah this helped me a tremendous ammount not even doctors knew to tell me to breathe with my diaphragm
I just started learning ocarina because of your videos. Didn’t realize what I learned in the school choir would help with my ocarina playing.

@@dakotawilliams507 Hebsidnt say how do you actually produce the vibratp though?
Appreciate the in-depth tutorial, David. This sure is a challenge, even as a decently experienced player. I've always had to resort to diaphragmic vibrato (forced), but it definitely doesn't sound as good or natural. I've heard a lot of debate in the singing community that vibrato is something you have to be born with, and not something that can be learned if you don't have it already. Do you feel there's any truth to that? How long did it take you to master it?
This is very well explained, I'm honestly impressed at the level of detail you gave us about how a Vibrato works. I hope I can develop a Vibrato following your guide, would make a lot of songs sound a lot better!
I tried doing this while practicing ocarina yesterday, and it helped a lot... Thank you for creating such amazing/helpful videos
This helped alot! :D Thanks!
Your videos like this one are one of the reasons I love internet and the usefulness of it
Wow, this was one of the things I have been wondering for a long time. Also, with your help I got it right away. Thank you so much!
Thanks David! Glad you're back doing this :D
As a flute, our teacher actually taught us how to do it. I was never told it was naturally occurring, I was simply told to basically make a wave in my air flow. This is very fascinating to me. When I tried this technique with the Ocarina it didn't sound smooth, it sounded jagged and awful but with David showing me I can kinda hear it. It's exciting! Guess I got some practicing to do.
I'm so late to this video, but thank you all the same. In middle school I had the Choir teacher I was breathing wrong and that my stomach should not inflate; just my chest and back. I've played several instruments and never had a teacher tell me I was breathing incorrectly. Yes this does include the band teachers I've had. So thank you for explaining.
Thanks. I've been playing an ocarina for almost 3 months (150hrs of play time) and noticed this morning that I appeared to have something like a vibrato starting to come in though I wasn't doing anything to cause it so just looked up how to do vibrato and found this :) , I must be just starting to get a natural vibrato.
I don't play the ocarina, but watching your videos always makes me want to. I'm just not able to purchase one at the moment, and even if I was, I would be anxious about picking the right one for me. Still, these videos are very informative, and listening to you play is a joy. Keep up the good work, David. :)

I didn't even know what Vibrato was prior to this video, but turns out I already had it XD. I thought it was just my lungs faltering from too much breathing or something, but i'm relieved to know it's natural and means healthy air flow.

You tutorial composition is great! :) I dont play Ocarina though.. but still entertaining to watch!
Have you ever considered doing vocal tutorials???
My years of playing the French horn finally has a use!
I feel like vibrato and other little things like that that aren't really part of the instrument always have the tendency to come naturally after a while of playing and having a better understanding of what you're doing, and it should not be forced. As a guitar player, every time someone asks me how to better their vibrato or string bending etc. I just tell them to keep on playing!
Hi your really good at these tips
Well, David, Your vibrato is best ever!
Wonderful tutorial on diaphragmatic breathing, and proper breathing technique for singing and playing wind instruments. Obviously key for producing a good vibrato effect. However, a little short on the actual vibrato part.
Great lesson. I happen to love vibrato. I tried it and it sounded so cool. Thank you David. XOXOJane

YEEEAAHH!! XD
The problem I have with vibrato is that I've played bassoon for 6 years, and we produce vibrato by the last method you listed, pusling the breath. The natural way simply does not do anything with how much space the air has to travel through. So I just have a much trickier time getting my brain to stop! I'm fine with the diaphragmatic breathing and the exersizes and all that though. Great lesson, it really is just down to practice!

I think forced vibrato can work fine for other wind instruments because of the amount of air necessary as you mentioned, but the ocarina being as sensitive to breath as it is, natural vibrato really has a more balanced sound. Keep working at it...it'll come eventually :)
So this is going to be helpful :D
David, if the vibrato comes naturally, how do you "control" when it happens? There can always be times where you want a long note without vibrato, how do you then not do vibrato? Or how to apply vibrato to a short note? I am learning ocarina myself and so far I use the pulsing breath (diaphragm) method that you also did in the video, because that way I can apply it when needed. Thanks for the video, hope you will reply! :)

Well, from what I've learned, is that vibrato usually haven't at the near end of your breath, so maybe if there some parts where you need a vibrato, limit the amount of air you suck in before playing those notes.
@sameash3153
Жыл бұрын
To remove vibrato on a note that otherwise would have vibrato, it's kind of like "holding your breath". That doesn't make much sense because you're blowing at the same time. But it's like you stop your air pressure early (a feeling in the chest), and then use only the air in your mouth. This is after all why beginners aren't having vibrato, because they're usually using only the air in the mouth. They breathe, hold their breath, and then play.
I was genuinely shocked when you dropped the ocarina, they can break!
Hey David! do you have any tips for learning how to play by ear?
Much needed, as many in the oc community have a machine gun type of vibrato. :) I believe there is a little more to using the diaphragm than just breathing with it, such as developing the slight ha-ha-ha from the lower parts, it is still a very informative video. Good work!
I'm putting all the ocarina tutorial in playlist...When I get a ocarina I'll rewatch all of it...And practice on the ocarina

@heikebobert924

+Brandon Vance I think it is just different and you may need a bit time. While singing, the vocal chords are part of the natural vibrato, the balance between diaphragm and vocal chords and articulation... All is part of your own body which you learned to control. With the ocarina the vocal chords of course stay open and the sound vibrates by the right balance between the diaphragm and the air-flow in and through the ocarina (which is then like an extension of the body). You can only control your own breathing and not the upper end. But I would say the "resistance/backflow/outflow" of the air in and through the ocarina helps to find the balance. I don't have vibrato often with the ocarina yet, but sometimes it suddenly comes naturally. I have been singing, too, and it feels different. (Not sure if my English is good for what I want to say)

hey in a vocalist that picked up the ocarina to (im a bass 2 what are you)
I naturally have always breathed with my diaphragm, and I've always been confused when books said that the person's chest rises and falls. Am I not normal?
I can breathe with my diaphragm about halfway, but to fill my lungs all the way forces my chest and shoulders to rise and my stomach does not expand any more. it starts to hurt a bit too. is this normal? do I just have bad posture? (well, I know I have bad osture, but I'm working on that.) I also have had lung surgery and I have a staple in the top of my right lung. I had a lung collapse a few years ago.
I can vibrato on pretty much any brass instrument but I don't know how on ocarina
So if i just continuesly breathe correctly in future, the vibrato sound will come automatically ?
So... David. Would it be easier to teach a person how to develop their appoggio and "sing" into the instrument without making tone? In that case the vocal folds are still vibrating at an intense rate. I'm an experienced vocalist and when I hear don't use your throat I wondering if that's targeted at someone who would physically try contracting the muscles in their throat versus allowing the tessitura of the voice take over. Or are you suggesting the air does it alone?
And then I realize, so just keep doing what my band teacher tells me to do? Yay! I can do that!
Nice idea to make a Tutorial to them
I wish there were channels as good as yours for other instruments!

David, could you please make a christmas song tutorial ?
Totally off topic, but I saw Totoro and Link in the background and started enthusiastically pumping my fist in the air. :p
I'm a flautist, and i use throat staccato naturally. all of my peers use "gut puffs" and I've been told my form of vibrato is very advanced compared to the others in school.
You have no idea how happy it made me to hear that "Amazing Grace" is one of your favorite songs! It's one of mine, too, and is one of the first songs I'll attempt to play when I try out a new instrument. :) Thanks a lot for this tutorial; I'll have to give it a try.

If you think about it logically, it doesn't occur just "naturally" because any person who sits upright at a desk job would be breathing in vibrato, which isn't how humans breathe. It's all in the muscles that control the diaphragm - kind of like how when you first learn to type on a keyboard without looking: you overstretch your fingers and then sometimes over-correct until you finally develop the fine-motor skills to type accurately without looking. First you have to hold a good note. You practice holding a clear solid note that comes from the diaphragm (you need to be mentally thinking about this as you play because it's easy to slip up). Vibrato engages very small movements in the muscles, a level of control we don't normally engage in but once we DO develop that skill, it's not like it just becomes the default. The only reason I think David is saying it comes "naturally" is because with enough diaphragm practice you develop control over the smaller muscles but they are so subtle you don't really notice it, you can only feel the affect of them producing vibrato. The bottom line is that it is something you deliberately control, but the acquisition of the skill comes naturally (through practice), and once you have it it becomes second nature (e.g., like breathing or blinking - you can control when it happens and when it doesn't, but it happens naturally otherwise).

I knew nothing at all about vibrato and it is naturally starting to appear in my playing (I wasn't trying to do it at all, it just started happening). After 20 years of singing and following this very advice, I have been forced to accept that my throat anatomy simply does not facilitate the vibrato effect. No matter how relaxed I am when I sing, my notes are steady.
