Have a new Cheek Spreader Version 2.0. Was hiking on the AT last week, had to go, and there was some firewood someone had cut 3-4 inches diameter and about 15 inches long. Took 2 of those short logs and set them parallel about 3 inches apart behind a tree, dug a trench in the dirt between them, than sat on them using the tree as a backrest. The logs keep my butt dry and elevated above the poop trench. Very comfortable place to do my business.

Definitely one of the best videos on the topic out there! Thank you so much for sharing, you’re doing a great service to the community. Especially the squatting tutorial is unique and welcome. Do you have a routine, or a typical time you go number two when through hiking?

No typical routine, but after all that walking going number 2 was very regular!

I am too old @68 and body doesn't squat. Trick is to make a "Cheek Spreader". Here is some mountain engineering for you. Find 2 branches around 1.5 inches diameter and around 4 feet long. Put branches parallel about 3 inches apart and place one end on a rock (or log) and the other end in the dirt forming around a 35 degree angle. Sit on the parallel branches facing the dirt end and it makes a comfortable seat. Poop in between the parallel branches. It is called a "Cheek Spreader" because when you sit on the parallel branches, your body weight causes your cheeks to spread out. You could just use the angled parallel branches as a comfortable backpacking chair whenever you need one, it is actually comfortable to sit on.

Sam, I love all your videos and this one was very helpful (and funny!) However, I'm 60 and cannot squat anymore! Is there an alternative position for an older person who can no longer squat?

Best bet is to sit over a log or hang onto a tree.
