I will NEVER backpack with gore-tex shoes ever again! I learned the hard way that hiking with them gives me blisters because it's better to hike in shoes that you can "hike them dry"

I agree 100%. They are fine for rainy day hikes in cooler weather, but that's about it.

I dunno, my gore-Tex&leather (Ecco) shoes with wool socks are amazing. You can soak them, and walk them dry for sure.

Nice video. I got my first poncho 60 years ago when I joined Boy Scouts. It was okay and multifunctional. Years later, I was issued a poncho in the Army. It was very versatile. It covered me and my ruck, could be set up as a shelter, made into a hammock, used as a ground cloth, add the liner(woobie) and it became a sleeping bag, and when things went bad it could be a stretcher. They were designed so that they snapped together to make big tarps. I brought two home but after only 40 years they delaminated. I now use the $10 tarps from River Country Products. Ice Bear Hikes did a review a couple of years ago. They are big, fairly light and have loops at each corner. I plan to make a liner for one from 2 cheap fleece blankets. Have fun. Good Luck, Rick

Other people have mentioned on here - ponchos. Not the cheap ones, but a real durable hiking poncho that covers the backpack (saves on getting a backpack cover). Easy ventilation, full coverage, real rain proof material (not merely rain ‘resistant’). Next day, even if it’s still raining, you can put the tent and other went items on the back of the backpack mesh, and cover it up with the poncho so it’s still drying and getting some ventilation, but not stuck inside your backpack where you want other dry materials. I use an Italian hiking poncho i got in Europe. Hard to find good ponchos in the US for hiking. I see those flimsy frog Toggs and garbage bag style ponchos… that’s NOT what I’m talking about here. There are real good ponchos that are versatile and will transform your rain-hiking experience

Excellent advice guys. I’ve hiked in the rain and snow a couple times and it is a challenge but y’all are correct that the sun will eventually come out and you will eventually become dry again. Take it for what it is and make the best of it. Also the best time for photos is when the rain stops and the clouds part. I’ve seen beautiful sunsets after the worse rains. I will add that it is absolutely awesome sleeping in dry clothes, dry quilt listening to rain on your tent.

Regarding putting on cold wet clothes... in the morning you can fold them up into a square and sit on them while you have breakfast, your body heat will make the clothes a bit more tolerable and less shocking when you finally put them on.

When it rains, waterproof shoes are like buckets, they don't let water out. Once I had 8 days in a row of rain and can't stand my feet being constantly wet. After that, I bought dive booties as dry socks.

I got a cheap umbrella in Gatlinburg, had to buy 2 or 3 more $5 Walmart umbrellas by the time I got to Maine. Will try one of the hiking umbrellas next time. I wore Oboz boots. Feet would get hot but the only time they got wet was in a bad thunderstorm when my cheap umbrella failed because I was trying to shelter another hiker under it standing up. They never leaked otherwise and I managed to avoid stepping into a hole that allowed water to come in from the top by using my hiking poles to gauge the holes. Best hiking boots I've ever had, I'm on my third pair. I've hiked in Chacos and they were comfortable. Don't know if I could make them work on a thru-hike though. Probably try trail runners next.

Over the pat 35 yrs in the army, I found much of this to be true in that arena as well. Gortex boots were the rage during the 90s but, as you say ere, they eventually become water-logged and take forever to dry. Any kind of movement in rain gear (even Gortex) will soak the wearer with sweat. Gortex doesn't breathe nearly as well as we all think. And there is nothing like the feeling of pulling back on your wet clothes for a new day. On the 'suckage' meter that's way up there. As one old salt once said, "if you put on a dry spare uniform (if you even have one) all you wind up with is a soaking wet set of clothes on you and another in your pack adding weight."

Have you thought about a poncho and maybe rain chaps for warm weather? I always like the breathability of a poncho. I don’t care about my legs getting wet unless it’s really cold rain and then rain chaps work well for me.

If it’s not too windy, some more experienced hikers use umbrellas ☔️ , you don’t soak in your own sweat. Some umbrellas ☂️ can double as parasols to keep you cool and unburnt .😊 P.S. If it’s not too cold 🥶 you can hike naked .

I work at an outdoor chain called The Great Outdoor Provision, and I will tell customers the same thing you guys said, and that is that in backpacking, your either gonna be wet from the rain, or you are going to be wet from your sweat. I usually only recommend waterproof shoes and gear if you will be in below freezing/snow/cold conditions.

I'm going on an 8 day section hike in VT next week and need to be prepared for cold rain. I have my rain suit strapped to the top of my pack for quick access. It should be dry most days. Regardless, I'm going to stay in shelters and cabins whenever possible to keep dry and save time. 🌞😊

Hikers could always bring a plastic bag and put their wet clothes in it, then slide it into your warm sleeping bag in the morning to warm them up before getting dressed 😉
