How to play Shogi(将棋) -Lesson#9- Illegal Pawn drop

Ойындар

I'll be talking about illegal pawn drops, Which are "mate with a dropped pawn" and "two pawns in a file".
I'll also show you a brilliant mate problem, in which a rook chooses to unpromote so as to avoid "mate with a dropped pawn".

    I think I mentioned at around 4:00 that you can drop a pawn on the file if the other pawns are already promoted. By the way, 'summon' is a very interesting way of rephrasing 'drop' in shogi. I liked that.

    As a person who got interested in shogi way too late in his life than it should have been, in a country where almost no one knows what it is or knows how to play it, I am thankful to fate for being able to find this series that both helps getting to know how to play and gives infos about its origins and the way it's played in Japan, with a clear and simple english explanation. Thank you, I hope you're good and i wish you the best

    However, immediate loss of the game by an illegal move is a thing only in offical games. If you're playing shogi just for fun with your friends, you don't have to end the game by illegal moves. You should just point out the illegal move and let him correct his move, of course.

    5:15 Hello Hidetchi, this is very interesting concept (meaning losing the game after committing a move being a rule violation). Is it only with the double pawn drop or any other illegal move? And why the rule is like this? Is it a culture thing?

  • @seussusamongoose2905

    @seussusamongoose2905

    @@TestowyAP1 it is not a culture thing, it is standard practice to disqualify for illegal actions in most professional board game leagues. It is rare for a great player to make an illegal mistake, and if they do that should be attributed to the mental dominance of the other player.

    @@seussusamongoose2905 hi, I tend to disagree. I understand, that if you play tournament shogi, making nifu, that is illegal move is an autoloss. If you compare to western chess (refer for example to fide laws of chess) making illegal move does not mean an autoloss. I definetely see the difference in approach.

    I think undos are fine at the beginner level, and for people who are only playing for fun, but in a serious game, rules should always be followed. And the illegal pawn drop rules make the game very interesting. It's exciting when you're playing or watching a game where one of the players is saved thanks to the mate with a dropped pawn rule.

  • @HIDETCHI
    @HIDETCHI14 жыл бұрын

    The player who made the illegal move loses the game even when it was pointed out later in the game. However, if it was pointed out after his opponent made a resignation, it's a win for him. But it's very unlikely because the people who are watching the game are allowed to point out an illegal move.

    I am grateful for these videos, although I cannot help being a bit sad for discovering them as an adult, and in a country where no one plays shogi. I was trained in chess under my father at an early age. I remember quitting chess because the rules felt oppressing, and also because my opponent didn't accept defeat. Had I played shogi instead, I know I would've stayed interested in this subtle, complex and beautful discipline. Thank you for having made me discover shogi.

  • @HIDETCHI

    You're right. You never have to say 'check' in shogi. And yes, it's practically almost impossible to create a stalemate in shogi, because the number of the pieces in the game never decreases. You probably have pieces in hand, so almost never occurs a situation where you can't make any move when you're not checked. Of course it's mathematically possible, but no rule is specified about how we should end the game when it's a stalemate. ^^;

    Had to look at this like 4 times to understand ; so we don't upgrade the rook in order to only put a check with the respawned pawn and not a checkmate, because it would be illegal ? So when the pawn is already here we can use it to mate, so we decide to promote the rook. Right ? Anyway thank you so much for your videos, you're the only youtube chanel that actually teaches us to play this game.

    Yes. The only illegal move is a pawn drop that immediately checkmates. But if the pawn is dropped and the checkmate only occurs one turn latter, then it is perfectly legal.

    I understand the uchi-fu-tsume, or "pawn drop mate" has historic reasons behind it: that the lowly soldier is unworthy to kill the mighty king by something as powerful as a drop, or something. Oh, and thanks for the example where it can be to one's advantage to leave an hisha (rook) unpromoted.

  • @hirohiigo

    A link to the video I used is XICtHIuZ1u4. Yes, moving a piece wrongly is an illegal move, so the game end there. Other illegal moves are promoting a piece when it can't promote, or, making two moves in a row by mistake without waiting for the opponent to make one, or making the first move by mistake when you're white, or not making a move within time limit, or "do-over" where you change the move after you finished making one.

    I'm just a beginner but I don't see any sense in the example of unpromoted Rook. If the White plays 1. R6i promoting with check, then Black answers with 1. P7i, then in the 2. move the White plays N7h promoted with check, the Black 2. K x P9h, the White 3. R x 7i and whatever the Black plays it's a forced mate in the 4th. White's move (with a notation taking into account that actually the board is upside down, if this is a Black King). So in this case there would be no reason not to promote the Rook, because you can checkmate two moves earlier than without promotion. Am I wrong?

  • @nicolassznajder780

    @nicolassznajder780

    Indeed. In that case, you're right. I believe that if black had a bishop on F5 to prevent the knight's promotion, the example would also prevent that and force the unpromoted rook play. I can be wrong, tought

    is it also illegal if the opponent can make a drop on the next turn wich can save him from the mate? Or should only the pieces on the board count for the ability to do something against the mate? Do u understand my question? So can I drop a pawn wich makes mate and wich only the opponent can get rid of by dropping a piece on the board?

    13 years late, but the situation you described is impossible, since a pawn can only attack the square in front of it. A pawn drop that can be captured or blocked with opponent's drop is, by definition, NOT an immediate mate, and therefore not illegal. However, if the opponent NEEDS to drop a piece first before it can save itself from the pawn checkmate (on the next turn), then yes, the dropped pawn has put the opposing king in IMMEDIATE mate and therefore is illegal.

    Firstly, it's not mate if they can drop a piece to get out of it. And second you're asking about an impossible situation because it's impossible to put a piece between the king and a dropped pawn which is putting him in check.
