How to play Shogi(将棋) -Lesson#30- Checkmate Problems

Ойындар

In this video, I'll be talking about checkmate problems. A checkmate problem can be made for shogi training, and also can be made as a work of art. You'll see three mate problems which I made myself. The last one, mate in 27, is pretty interesting, so why don't you solve it yourself? I'll also show you some of the most artistic mate problems that are made in the 18th century of Japan which we call Edo era. And you will see the longest-moves mate problem on earth in the last of my video. Don't miss it!

    0:26 "easiest mate problem" An easier mate problem would be where the only check is a mate. Like gote king in 11, rook in 12, silver in 21, bishop in 22, sente knight in hand, only check is a mate

    Yes, I believe that's one of the best ways of composing a mate problem. "Vampire" is an interesting one, but I think that kind of problem is impossible to make, because as you get pieces and your pieces in hand increase, you'll be able to mate the King before you capture all the pieces.

    I paused the video and tried to solve these. It took me awhile, but it is satisfying to solve them yourself! More problems please : - ). I learned that you have to play many branches of each solution to make sure you have the best solution. I also learned from the first example before 4:56, you have to play that bishop knowing that if they take it, they lose from Gold Drop on head. Brilliant stuff!

    If you promote the Rook, it will bring you into "mate with a dropped pawn" and it's a deadlock. For example, if the Rook on 8c at 8:20 was a Dragon, you can't drop the pawn on 9b and can't mate.

    The answer to a common question: 6:02 dropping the pawn in front of the silver is "mate with a dropped pawn" (see Lesson#9), and that is illegal

    I love these videos, Hidetchi. You don't seem to be actively responding to comments, but at 6:25 I could only figure out how to mate in 12 or 20 moves. That must mean I made 上手 make a stupid move. I really wish you had shown that one. Is there any way to play Mate problems against a computer?

    Hello, this video is great, however, it doesn't seem to fully explain the concept of what a checkmate problem is. Perhaps putting it into the description, and adding a notation to the video? Also, do you know of any books on checkmate problems in English?

  • @HIDETCHI
    @HIDETCHI14 жыл бұрын

    The king can be in the same file. Maybe you're mixing up Japanese chess and Chinense chess? As to the second question, it is not a rule violation in real game not to choose the longest line. It is just a rule for solving checkmate problems.

    Can we compose checkmate problems by composing the final result first, then reversing the whole plot( as if we were scrambling Rubik's Cube)? I thought this method will be the easiest way to compose Invisible ink type mate problems. Also, I have "Vampire"(吸血鬼, Kyuketsuki: When solving problem, the attacker will capture all of the pieces that were used to be in the hand of king's side.), a mate problem category classified myself. Is this possible to be classified?

    i think i got the solution. It is easy, 1.-rook droping at 17 + 2.-king 28 3.-gold droping at 27 + 4.-king 38 5.-gold 37 + It would take me a lot of time to exlain all variations but vasically this gold is goig to purse the king along the complete file until he reaches 98 and then after gold 97 the king moves to 91 and gold droping at 92 complete the job, if at any time the king tries to get back theres is always a combination of gold dropings that leads to check mate

    Thank you for this comment, it was really useful for understanding this puzzle. Indeed, after the initial gold reaches 87, the king is forced to go to 78 to avoid the check-mate you just described. After that, a gold is dropped one square above the king (in this case 77) and will chase the king until the remaining safe spaces for the king are divided in half. (From one block of 6 squares to a block of 2 squares and a block of 3 squares) We drop another gold and chase the king one step. (Safe space is now divided into two blocks of 1 square) Finally, our last gold can drop above the king to check-mate. This same technique can be used to mate the king earlier if it goes to the right before it has reached 88. One possible way that this can go is: (where the opponent's King is denoted as _King_ ) 1. drop Rook at 17 2. _King_ 28 3. drop Gold at 27 4. _King_ 38 === gold chases _King_ until 87. === 5. Gold 37 6. _King_ 48 7. Gold 47 8. _King_ 58 9. Gold 57 10. _King_ 68 11. Gold 67 12. _King_ 78 13. Gold 77 14. _King_ 88 15. Gold 87 === if _King_ goes to 98, it will be mate in 21, so _King_ must go to 78. === === in this example, _King_ is always forced to go to the right. === 16. _King_ 78 17. drop Gold at 77 18. _King_ 68 19. Gold 67 20. _King_ 58 21. Gold 57 22. _King_ 48 === 'living space' of _King_ is now divided into blocks of 2 and 3. === === having Gold chase _King_ any further will just drag things out. === 23. drop Gold at 47 24. _King_ 38 25. Gold 37 === 'living space' of _King_ is now divided in two blocks of 1. === === _King_ can now go either left or right, but the result is the same. === === Here, _King_ goes to the right. === 26. _King_ 28 27. drop Gold at 27 = *checkmate* =

    After some consideration, I believe this problem can be forced to be a mate in 23 instead of 27. ==Edit:== Please disregard this argument for a forced mate in 23. As pigeno1000 rightfully pointed out in the replies, this argument falls apart when the King moves from 88 to 99. In this scenario, the move 'drop Gold on 87' does not result in a checkmate, granted we only have 2 Golds left in reserve. Instead, there are two possible plays if the King keeps going left: Checkmate in 19: 16. _King_ 98 17. drop Gold on 97 18. _King_ 99 19. drop Gold on 98 = *checkmate* = or instead it will checkmate in 21: 16. _King_ 99 17. drop Gold on 98 18. _King_ takes 98 19. drop Gold on 97 20. _King_ 99 21. drop Gold on 98 = *checkmate* = Therefore, the chasing step 15: Gold 87 (instead of drop Gold on 87) is crucial for the checkmate with most moves, which is 27. ========= Since we have 4 golden generals in our reserve, the 'turning point' of whether the opponent's king can be mated at 99, starts after move 13. If the King goes to the left, all we have to do is drop Gold on 87, 97 and 98 in that order. This will result in a mate in 19 moves, so the King is forced to go to the right. This means that we can avoid forcing the king to go to 88 and then back to 78, shaving off 4 moves in total. This results in the following scenario: 1. drop Rook at 17 2. _King_ 28 3. drop Gold at 27 4. _King_ 38 === gold chases _King_ until 77. === 5. Gold 37 6. _King_ 48 7. Gold 47 8. _King_ 58 9. Gold 57 10. _King_ 68 11. Gold 67 12. _King_ 78 13. Gold 77 === turning point: _King_ has to go to the right to avoid mate in 19 === 14. _King_ 68 15. drop Gold at 67 16. _King_ 58 17. Gold 57 18. _King_ 48 19. Gold 47 === 'living space' of 5 squares reduced to two blocks of 2. _King_ arbitrarily moves to the right === 20. _King_ 38 21. drop Gold on 37 22. _King_ 28 23. drop Gold on 27 = *checkmate* = (=== or if _King_ arbitrarily moves to the left ===) 20. _King_ 58 21. drop Gold at 57 22. _King_ 68 23. drop Gold at 67 = *checkmate* =
