How to play Shogi(将棋) -Lesson#19- Castles for Static Rook against Swinging Rook

Ойындар

In this lesson, I'll show you castles for Static Rook, especially when you play against Swinging Rook. I couldn't make it shorter than 11 minuites, so I applied time compression to the video. It might be a little too fast, sorry.
I call Swinging Rook as "Ranging Rook" in this video, because that is the most common name used by English speakers. However, I change the title to "Swinging Rook" due to my personal preference.

I love it whenever you say "Wow!" or "It looks strong!", cracks me up every time. X) Anyway, thank you very much for those videos, they've really helped me get started. As an experienced chess player, I was baffled when I tried to play Shogi and realized how different it was! It's a very enjoyable game though, I can't wait to learn more about it!

Usually, you shouldn't push the edge pawn when you're playing anaguma. Pushing the edge pawn just helps your opponent to make an edge attack. Edge attack is a really effective way to break anaguma castle. If you don't push the edge pawn of anaguma, you're opponent will have to push the pawn three times to open the edge attack, otherwise just one. Genrally speaking, anaguma is stronger than silver crown, although silver crown is pretty strong, too.

I actually won a match using this strategy. It gave me insight to see the method of my opponents movements trying to trap me into stagnation. thank you for sharing your wisdom.

Hi. The best castle of all is Anaguma castle. But it's hard to complete building it up without your opponent harrassing your camp.

@gokharol As you get better, you'll know which castles to use in what situations. For example, when I play fourth file rook, I'm thinking, "I want to castle into Anaguma, but if he goes for a rapid attack, I'll play Mino. If he plays slowly after S-7b, I'll castle into Silver Crown." It comes naturally the more you play.

Hi hidetchi-san, I must say that this video is the most informative for me out of all of the videos, as there are few sites on the internet regarding shogi castling, especially in english. Thanks, & keep up the good work!!

@emperorofosiris1: Common defenses against Central Rook for Static Rook are Lefthand Anaguma and variations of Lefthand Mino. Ranging Rook players usually respond to Central Rook with Mino Castle.

Yes, boat castle and girl in the house are very useful, especially in western tournaments where 4th file rook is still a common opening. You typically use the silver beneath the king to attack. See Hidetchi's Shogi Openings videos for information on how to play against 4th file rook.

@simonguoxm: You don't need to memorize all these castles. You just need to learn the basics of static-vs-static, static-vs-ranging, and ranging-vs-ranging strategies. A good tip to know when forming a castle is "Defend hte king with 3 generals: Two golds and a silver." Doing this as a beginner is more important than remembering all these castle formations.

@Gerstein1 You mean the small シ? It's a double consonant marker. It means the next consonant needs to be said as two syllables. So ビッグ would be "Biggu" rather than Bigu (ビグ).

@krazykraut There's no reason to be afraid of Fujii's System if you make a rapid attack. Just be sure not to make Anaguma when you play against Fujii's System.

thx, this is great. Just some newbie question. Is Bear in the hole weak if I already have push edge pawn 9g to 9f to stop 9d-9e ? Iets say I play raging rook opening is a silver crown weak against a anaguma? rook change bad idee then for example (genaral speaking)?

@gokharol You'll need to learn how to castle if you ever want to get good at shogi. Not castling is just not an option at a higher level of play.

At 8:15 you moved the bishop, and then the king over where the bishop use to be. Is this similar to western chess' castle where move the rook and king at the same time or am i missing something here.

Hi there, sorry I have a few questions for you today! Are "boat castle" and "girl in the house" still very common for "friendly" amateur games these days? I just want to improve my defense when playing static rook against my friends and the computer. The hidari-mino castles feel unnatural for me, and I find anaguma is too slow for me. How do you use the silver under the king in Boat Castle? Do you have any links to some "typical" games of static rook vs ranging rook that I could watch?

  • @RayVitoles

    @RayVitoles

+angelvictot Actually its not..The golds cover 2 files from kings side,so its hard to have a gold 1 gap from the king(which would be a threat),and even if you do that you still need 2 or 3 moves to have a threatmate..Also,the defending side has the option to even drop a bottom lance(usually captured in these kinds of situation),so it makes it hard for even doubled rook attack to succed fast enough..I think the best way to win this castle is to either not let the opponent make them or try to overpower the other side with pawns and confine your oppenent in a position where he cant trade rooks and has to stay passive
