How to play Shogi(将棋) -Lesson#17- Castles for Double Static Rook Opening

Ойындар

In lesson#17 through #20, I'll teach you many castles in Shogi. It is important that you learn the strong points and the weak points of each castle, and what kind of strategy they should be used in. In this video, I'll show you castles for Double Static Rook strategy.

Idk if this guy has ever taken any class in teaching. Honestly he's a superb tearcher. From what to teach first to how to show the lesson visually and the small exercises after each point. Also the way he explain Japanese concepts in perfect English despite not being a native speaker is so impressive.

"Yagura" is hard to translate. Maybe something like a "watch tower". But some people call this castle a "Fortress". I think they intentionally altered its meaning.

A very good question. You must be a good player. You're right. It's not an immediate threat when it's like the example in the video. But if the battle had already started in frontal area, you won't be able to capture the Bishop safely, especially when square 8g is beeing attacked. The Bishop is aiming 8g, so the Gold on 7h can't even move. Actually ,in the middlegame or endgame, even exchanging the Bishop with the Gold on 7h isn't really a bad idea, because the Yagura will be destroyed.

Yes, you can say that. But we sometimes make Silver Standing Yagura intensionally, so it has a name.

Thanks for leaving a comment. I hear that Shotest Shogi explains pretty well about Shogi rules, but I'm glad you found my lessons as good as Shotest Shogi. And good Japanese :-)

@KampungJering No, you don't need to memorize all the castles. You'll eventually be able to recognize them as you play more and more, but the only ones you need to know immediately are Mino, Yagura, and Anaguma. The type of castle isn't as important as knowing the fundamentals of castling, so that you know how to attack each castle based on its formation. As for your second question, no, there's no stalemate; a stalemate situation is a loss for the king.

Hello, batabata-san. Yes, you're right. Bishop drop on 3i is also a powerful attack when 5th-file pawn has been moved. So, usually, in a Bishop Exchange Opening, you shouldn't move the center pawn as shown in the video.(^^;)

I agree - I played go for several months, but was constantly frustrated after losing to stronger players who had memorized all the life and death patterns. With shogi, I feel like I can actually improve and have fun with the game.

@emperorofosiris1: Since Yagura is a static rook castle, you will want to attack with your bishop, rook, knight, and right silver on the 2nd or 3rd file. Since Yagura is generally played when both players have built a Yagura castle, that will be where the opponent's King is.

And also, when sente is in the middle of attacking, with the Silver and the Knight on the right being further advanced towards gote than in the video, the Bishop's threat to 4g or 3f is very effective to rout sente's offense. It would be difficult to prevent gote from making a Horse on 4g or 3f. And I'm sorry I have to end the video so soon. KZread doesn't accept videos longer than 10 minutes.

You castle away from the rook if there is time, however with some openings like the yokofudori, you don't have the time to make a safer castle (of course if you feel saucy, you could always just ENTER THE CRAB)

Maybe it can be called Basic Yagura castle instead? Later on you can build it into a Golden or Silver Yagura by dropping a piece in place.

Hey your videos are great! I've watched all of them so far and they are extrememly interesting! I love them and I'm beginning to understand and love this beautiful game! I had just a question for you... Why is there is so much contrast between go and shogi players? And how do you think the two games relate? Which one is the best for you? THanks for the answers, and great job!

What do you mean by 'so much contrast between go and shogi plyaers' ? I like shogi more than go. Go is pretty difficult for beginners but shogi is easier to get to level where you can enjoy.

phew I think this is the hardest lesson yet - I'm trying to copy down all the castles and it's quite exhausting :P would you say that castling in the middle of the board like Central House and Duck Legs is unusual, because usually castling happens to the sides.

  • @grolich
    @grolich12 жыл бұрын

That's actually the opposite: Shogi is more difficult for beginners even from learning the rules, which take a while to get used to, while the rules of Go can be taught in 5 minutes even to a small kid (done that many times). As to enjoying the game - as long as there are players close to your level, no game is more enjoyable than another... heh that's just something we tend to tell ourselves to make it seem as if "my" or "our" game is somehow "superior" to others:) Both are great games!

Hi. HIDETCHI, I have 2 questions. First of all, is it a MUST to memorize all castles (Double Static Rook, Static Rook VS Ranging Rook and Double Ranging Rook)? Or, can I just memorize one castle that I think is good and I use it every time I play. Second, is there stalemate in Shogi, like Western Chess? =)
