How to play Shogi(将棋) -Lesson#18- Castles for Swinging Rook against Static Rook
Ойындар
In this lesson, I'll show you castles for Swinging Rook, especially when you're playing against Static Rook.
I call Swinging Rook as "Ranging Rook" in this video, because that is the most common name used by English speakers. However, I change the title to "Swinging Rook" due to my personal preference.

I lol'ed when I heard "Bear in the Hole"...
Thanks for this excellent video! The first time I watched it, I got overwhelmed toward the end.
An attack from ranging rook comes from the side, whereas Yagura defends against the front. If you're sente, for example, the gold on 78 is only being defended by the king, so it's easy to take advantage of it.
Thanks so much for your comment. I hope you and your friends come to like shogi!
Hello, thanks for your comment. I don't know which castles you are talking about. I showed "Right-hand King" in lesson#17. It uses the Rook as a defensive piece. What else castle do you wanna see?
@HIDETCHI When making silver crown, you can move your 4九 gold to 3九 before the 3八 silver is moved to 2七 to avoid the dangerous floating gold. Only then is the best time to move the lower gold to 3八.
I guess hirohiigo meant Double RANGING Rook at the end of his reply. See Lesson#20, "Castles for double ranging rook".
Hi this lesson are relly good I try to get this Video on my shogi website ;) in Poland Greating and Thx for your Job Adrian
nooo (T-T) I've had enough for the last lesson...ok I'll try my best !
@novatodeguitarra: Thanks for pointing this out. I'll fix the Shogipedia page soon. What Hidetchi showed here is a standard Anaguma. The variation shown on Shogipedia is actually a Double Static Rook variation of Anaguma.
Thanks. That makes sense.
Wow! Now I see what an electronic chess is. I guess there's nothing like that in Shogi. I think it's because Shogi needs piece stands to put the pieces in hand, and the piece stands would have to have enough rooms to detect all the pieces no matter how many they are, right? Instead, there are many computer softwares that can be used as a substitue for an electonic board.
The rook and bishop are the top trump pieces but wy do you risk losing them/exchange. also thanks for all the help in the shogi teaching episodes. Have you heard of the climbing silver and can you explain it to me :D
@Uncle Asuma Kabuto means helmet, but you probably know it as a name from a Naruto character, or a pokémon
いい音するな~
Hi, is there a source for Shogi games, including in Japanese as I would be interested in spending some time learning enough Japanese to be able to read Shogi games with some annotation. Then we could see these castles in use during a game. Excellent series.
um Hidetchi, I have a japanese question, if Kabuto were a name, would it's translation still be "headpiece"? Very cool/strategic castles ^^, I would personally go with anaguma castle, even if it take quite a few turns to build. Gin-Kammuri is also a very efficient castle as well. Domo arigatö gozaimasu, Hidetchi-sensei!
Hello Hidetchi, I've saw you have no translations for portuguese, would you like me to translate it if necessary?
Hidetchi san, among the reasons you mention for the ranging rook having an advantage if both rooks penetrate the opponent's camp, you say it's because the ranging rook's king is one step further from the battlefield. But since static rook often goes into some kind of Yagura castle, his king will be just as far from the battlefield as the ranging rook's king. Or is it not really possible to make a yagura AND a rapid attack as a static rook vs a ranging rook player?
@iLuvHinata360 i asume you ask that because of Naruto?... it's important to keep in mind that many names from anime characters are chosen because of what they mean and not because they are "real names". Kakashi for example means "scarecrow" D:
Oh, sorry for my poor English.^o^;; I thought it automatically detects what piece you've placed on which square. Never mind what I said.^^; Well, if you wanna play shogi during your travel (maybe by train or bus?), why don't you buy a portable game player like "Play Station Portable" or "Nintendo DS", and a Shogi software for them?
Thanks for the quick reply. You're not really covering that so I have a few more questions: 1) Why is that not a good idea? 2) is it bad against all ranging rooks, on any file? or slightly better or worse against some of them 3) How should ranging rook attack yagura? (if this has not already been answered when you answer question 1. Thanks for both the videos and your replies.
@HIDETCHI Sorry I made a mistake. Instead of playing Gold-3i, play Gold-4h-upwards to avoid floating gold.
Do alot of top level players use the Mino castle?
Chinese characters on pieces is really a obstacle.
@simonguoxm ya, i keep thinking it'd be a lot easier if it was chess pieces. I suppose a japanese person learning chess would thing the opposite.
Thanks for your comment. You speak Japanese!?
when you said the castle kabuto-mino at 9:21 kabuto is in fact a name well i think
search in google for yellow mountain imports (is a california based company that sells different traditional games on the internet among which you can find shogi sets).
裾固め... Maybe "Mountain Base Defence"? As in 山の裾 (山麓)... Hmm, dunno.
yea i thin il call you sensei now t ^^ reat job
But Bishop can defend to 7g and make a yagura too! Used for Static Rook!
where can i buy a shogi table in new york please if you know where tell me.
is not another down point of Anaguma that it leaves your offence very weak? if all your metals are in the castle then they can't be used to attack.
It is not a good idea to use Yagura against ranging rook.
Man castle are so cooland thanks for the lessons. Shogi is much cooler then chess.
Oops, double ranging rook is what I meant.
You can find shogi sets at A m a z o n . c o m, Toys & Games category. Just search "shogi".
Did anyone else mentally replace all instances of the word "mino" with "mine"? "Half mine", "silver mine", "diamond mine", "gold mine", "Kimura's mine"...
