Oh, you're doing the excercises with the real shogi set? That's a very good way to learn. I'm glad to know you're studying shogi with eagerness.
pieces returning to board makes this game much more complex. You need to watch piece on the board, and also pieces not on the board.
You can take the gold.. FOR FREE. Love your videos!
Skewer is when the first attacked piece wants to run from the attack and the other piece would then be captured. Pin is when the intermediate piece is fine to stay there, (won't be captured by the pinning piece), but can't get out of that line since the other piece would be captured.

In chess: Skewer is when the two pieces are equal in value (e.g. Gold and Silver, or Rook and Bishop), or the one in front is more valuable (e.g. Gold in front, knight behind). Pin is when the piece behind is more valuable (e.g. Gold in front, rook behind)
8:13 bishop discovery! if he retreats back, summon a pawn at 6c, if rook retreats forward, it's safe. Don't worry about the mistakes Hidetchi-san, as long as you point it out with the pop up text ^^. Thanks again for this helpfull lesson!
great lesson! you make shogi so interesting!!! i'm gonna stop doing homework and start playing now, keep on putting up these great lessons!
For the last move, you can take G-8g and protect your pawn on 8c at the same time, instead of taking P-2g ...
You're right. I mentioned it in the "Annotaion" for this video. Please turn on the "Annotation" switch. I wanted to explain about blocking a defender, so let's suppose opponent's another pawn is in 6b.
At 10:27, if the gold captures the pawn at 5b, black's rook move to 5g and create another gold fork, so white should capture black's pawn with the rook no matter which way black's rook escapes to.
Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you liked the lesson. But, don't stop doing your homework...(^o^;)
If the pawn is not attacking the rook, white can use his next turn to save his silver. The point here is that you have to keep having the initiative by always force white to move the rook, not allowing him to save his silver.
Man KZread removing annotation screwed these videos so bad.
and you can drop a pawn right in front of the rook (protected by the horse) if the rook doesn't move (as the horse would not directly threaten it)
@backflipx84 Yes, but then you can take the bishop with the pawn.
Pawndrop 2c at 8:51 =D Great lessons :D
if the rook retreats forward to 6e, it will be right behind the silver, so you won't be able to drop a pawn in front of it? (assuming we're looking at the same board)
You're absolutely right. My mistake...
I am usually struggling if whether if i have to sacrifice a piece to capture enemies. I know the pieces values but sometimes i doubt my own moves and play too defensively because i dont want to sacrifice a piece and ended up being bamboozled.
Hello, sorry if there's an obvious answer to this - but during the example given at about 10:10, what if the move R-5g was made? It would seem to create another fork.
It's nothing if you promote the pawn. You wanna get capture the Lance here. (by the way it's not pond, it's pawn)
The point of the example is that the silver will be saved. The rook can go to 6e after the bishop discovery.

What about Bishop to 5d after Rook 6e?
I wish the squares on a shogi board are colored like the squares on a chess board, so that we can clearly see what squares a bishop (角行) covers.
7:00 wouldn't it be a possibility to move Black-Bishop to 6C promoting it to a Horse? If he move his Rook to attack the Horse you can drop a Pawn to attack the Rook. Otherwise that if white Rook or Silver moves after promoting the Bishop, the other will be taken (if that makes sense ^^)
You mean the example for 'defender removal'. If white attacks black's bishop, then the bishop can just move in the diagonal and it's fine.
at 10:48, can't you just take the gold to the left simultaneously defending the pawn and taking the gold?
I'm a bit confused - what's the difference between the skewer and the pin? It seems like the pinned piece in "pin" is simply the intermediate piece in the "skewer".
@ShikaXTema4everRock By capturing it and dropping it back on the board.
How can you move lance?when it can move only forward and it`s in the corner?

You capture your opponents lance and then drop it
6:10 Why doesn't dropping a pawn on 5d work? Or, for that matter, 5f?

5d: Since the Rook isn't being directly threatened, the only piece White is motivated to move is the Silver. The Silver will be moved out of harm's way, and Black's own pawn now prevents capture of White's Rook. This creates no gain. 5f: White's move would be Sx5f. This wins no material, gives a pawn in hand to White, and leaves Black to face basically the same on-board situation as before.

If you drop a pawn on 5d, go-te's silver will move to 4f, and your pawn will not work. Then go-te's rook will change the column of the attack from 5 into 4.
nice job man im 13 years old i feel like playing this game all next year

Did you enjoyed it?
Just got started but at 10:50, why can't the rook take the gold on its left?
@beafle2180

He corrected it on the subtitles
7:20 why not just drop the first pawn at 5e so it's covered by the bishop, why bother pulling the white rook in?
in the last example you just take the gold on the left with your rook then you got the other guys rook sceward... Dont you?
If R-5g, the gold on 5a can simply run away.
@ShikaXTema4everRock Rewatch the previous Lessons on promotion and you will see. It will be forced to promote.
2c? The gold will just moves away and nothing happens...
for the first defender removal, he coul have just promoted his other pond. it would take less time.
8:45 overloaded

"Overweighted" sounds like he's saying the rook is fat.
I was thinking then the Rook could take the Gold knight at 8g, but I don't know why I didn't take into consideration Whites rook at 8b. Oops! :P
Oh snap, ofc it dose, my mistake ;(
P*2c, and the Gold just runs.
No. If he takes the pawn with his Rook, he loses the Gold on 8g.
This doesn't work because the gold and silver are supporting each other. The only way to win one of them is to drop the pawn.
i just realized that these vids are almost older than me
