In chess openings, beginners often struggle with early queen moves. This can lead to the Scholars Mate or other traps involving tactics that lead to losing material. In this video, I hope to show the Wayward Queen Attack and other opening garbage that you can defeat and not worry about anymore.

This kind of play takes you a lot further than just beating bad Queen openings. A lot of games below 1000 just have openings that aren’t exactly straight from the database, sometimes dudes are just gonna throw pieces around. When people do terrible openings it’s just important to stay principled, develop the center, and wear down the opponent.
Me and my friends have dubbed Queen to H5 the North Korean Missle Gambit Because seems intimidating until you realize that there is nothing supporting the actual attack and usually backfires on them.

Always has been
after watching the video i played a game where my opponent used early queen attack i told him i watched this video and he gave up
I know this video is old (In terms of KZread age) but I came here to say thank you Levy. I was watching this in some downtime at work. I got a few minutes in and decided heck I'll try it. My opponent immediately brought out his queen and using this info I forced a resignation. Thank you again and I enjoy your content
The first time I played Nelson I figured I had to handle his queen as soon as possible, so I immediately went for a Queen trade (within 4 moves I think). It worked out and I ended up winning! I still can’t beat Sven but hey

Everytime I attack his queen with my knight he just ignores it. After that I win. Everytime. I find him easier than Nelson. I hope that helps you defeat my Slav bro. I troll him now by playing bongcloud against him. Tutorial: if sven plays the french against you (you BETTER be playing white), you play the magnificent bongcloud against him. He will bring his queen out, so you have to first defend everything, then attack his queen.

I come back to this video every time my opponent ransacks my pieces by move 7 and I'm left sitting there trying to understand what happened
First time watching you, really easy to understand and learn! Thanks for the chill but informed vibe!
I had to come back to this video and thank you. I'm new to chess and after a lot of frustration losing to aggressive queen play, I watched this video. Today I had an opponent play Qh5 and I won in 13 moves. Thank you so much Levy!

I'm a bit late to this video, but it's been invaluable! I'm a 500 ish scrub and managed to beat a 700 who tried an early wayward Queen, all thanks to this (and getting caught out by these attacks a few dozen times in the past...)
Thank you! OMG! I was losing badly with these early Queen openings! One mistake and they capture a lot of material! Slowly, I learned to counter it much better. This video helps a lot!
Someone destroyed me with their queen and I resigned an hour ago!!! Then your video immediately came out. Amazing.

What a great teacher! Such love for teaching. I learned more from you about Chess in 20 minutes than 20 days on my own.
I also like hearing the inside logic of discovering checkmate vs just assuming your opponent always saw it making it seem impossible to ever get to that level.

I'm an absolute beginner and got scholar mated the first time today. Thank you for your many, short videos like this one. They really help me analyse my mistakes and learn :)
Hi from the future -- I would love to see more of these 5 minute games with your subscribers (who are rated about the same as me) because you explain your thought process very well. It's nice to see how to defeat the kind of people I face on a daily basis.
You are an outstanding teacher! Thank you and keep up the good work
Really happy this showed up in my recommended videos! I've been trying to get better at chess and I still struggle with early Queen attacks. I can usually stop the attack, but I can never punish them for doing so (usually losing pieces trying to). Tried watching other videos/reading articles on how to defend this, but your video is way better at explaining it for a beginner like myself! Thanks!
You're so inspiring me to learn chess deeply not only play for fun but to make a better decision too in real life

Yeah, it's so much fun learning theories and principles, applying them and watching your game actually improve.
This is about the most helpful chess tutorial I've seen yet - and I watched many!
I watched the first breakdown and got excited. Started a game (800s) and immediately was confronted with that exact attack by white. Opponent was up 2 pawns before he resigned on move 12. I guess he didnt like his queen antics being defended so well! Thanks Gotham!
07:57 - "Stabilise your rear deflectors. Watch for enemy fighters" "They're coming in ! 1 bishop at c4 !!"
The 2nd player did a great job, he reach to go into the final stage ALIVE, 😱 And have you seen his Elo? 710 WOW!!! This guy even loosing his rook at the end, maybe because of the nervous, is my absolute hero, and the king 👑 of heroes of every single beginner in the world 🗺, even been forced to play a premature queen attack. I will say it again, this guy is my hero.

I really appreciate this video. As a beginning player concentrating on openings, I have been scrambled by aggressive queen attacks that leave me looking like swiss cheese.
This video has so much meat on the bone. I need to watch it over and over to really learn everything that was shared. Fantastic video.

Levy, please read this: My chess experience is almost entirely online. When I look at the screen I see the coordination of pieces, which square I control, files, diagonals... etc. But when I play otb all I see is random pieces and I cannot really concentrate. This subject doesn't exist in internet. Please help!

you mean irl board? just practice or buy a better chessboard with better pieces. some chessmen out there are made out of cheap plastic that makes kings and queens hard to distinguish so yeah just find a good chessboard. this problem also happens in irl shogi, irl go and irl backgammon so dont worry its not just you. just practice and stare at the board.

With a point: you want your free pawn to be as far away as possible from the opponent's king... here you just push the other pawns.
Ur voice is seriously one of the reasons I love ur chess vids. Really great tone, and the 30 minutes are passing so fast. Keep going man, gg
Thank You, Levy I really needed this.
hi levy thank you once again for your videos ❤️ i almost quit chess since i was doing bad lately but your content truly refreshed me the basic principles in playing smarter 😁 have a nice day!!
Met 2 people using the wayward queen attack back to back. The first one timed out (going 1 minute without making any move), the second immediately blundered the queen on move 3
I was just starting to think about making a supercut of all the times you've said "a concept called 'danger levels'" and then you said you were making a video on it, and ya know it just took the wind right out of my sails.
Literally straight after watching this clip, I played a 'Nelson' who tried early Queen attack and managed to win easily. Thanks Gotham chess!
Rewatched a few months after getting back into chess. Now it makes far more sense. Excellent lesson. :)
This video literally won me like 10 games in a row bless you man.
Thanks for this video, this will help a lot of beginners. Sadly I had to learn the hard way, i.e. getting hit by almost every early possible early queen attack ;(
Thank you Rozma, love the video, very educational I appreciate it!
Incredibly clearly articulated strategy for developing and punishing early Queen attacks. Absolutely brilliant. Well done Levy.
