I've been looking at your Play Like ... videos and gotta say I'm pretty impressed. I've got three students starting soon and these videos are full of good answers to questions I've heard before and maybe bullshit my answers. But I am wondering. Which video should I start with to hear Paul sound like Paul? I like your playing.
In short: Lemme doesn't play bass. He plays baritone rhythm guitar. And it was badass. Thanks for the vid, man.

The bass its an extremely versatile instrument, you won't normally use a bass as he does because you have a guitar that can do the job well, but a guitar can't do the ''original bass job'', so you normally use a bass in the rythm section, not the melodic one, but its not some kind of a ''must do'' statement. He played bass, but just on a diffent way that we normally are used to hear it, that Motorhead sound it's because the main riff is done whit a bass, not a guitar

Wrong! Lemmy played bass. Last time I checked Rickenbacker was a bass guitar.
Tip number 11. Make mistakes in every song. If you isolate Lemmy's bassline you often hear a lot of small mistakes and omissions. It almost sounds like something from a drunken jam session rather than a final recording. It's one of the things that adds to the over-all feeling and hellraiser attitude of the tracks.

Jimi Hendrix also made some small mistakes in his songs as well (fittingly enough Lemmy was his roadie for a while), but the really cool thing about them is that they can make the mistakes still work out in their favor for the song as a whole. Makes them quite unique in an industry that practically demands near-perfection at bare minimum It really says something that these two who are regarded as some of the greatest guitarists & bassists ever weren't afraid to own up to the little flubs they made on the fretboard

@@Generaider I'm not a six string expert, but someone once said Hendrix was actually a rhythm guitarist who played extremely good lead. Not sure if it's true, but it sounds sensible.

Probably cared more that it felt right instead of being technically right. Plus using that much distortion it's so difficult to even make out any mistakes unless you isolated the track.
i really wish more people would use the bass like this. Most bass players have such a limited view of what the bass can do. My favorite players use it as a melodic instrument.

Use a medium pick, pick close to the neck, use bridge pickup, use two note chords, alternate up and down stokes.
Even though we want to sound like Lemmy, we never will, because nobody did like Lemmy or ever will, a pure original till the day he died!

@@devlintaylor9520 Yes, the Rickenbacker 4000 didn't had a neckpickup. But, the routing for the neck pickup was there. I think he put the thunderbird pickup in there, because he probably liked that sound. Would make sence. But, he played rickenbackers simply because they looked cool. But of course, i could be wrong. But the look of the rickenbacker, is one of the main reason people want one.
Lemmy was a unique in his playing. He came over to playing bass from playing guitar and did not know how to play bass just played it like a guitar

Lemmy inspired me to play bass, I bought a cheap semi beat up Ibanez 240 at a flea market and practiced by following the ace of spades album and several Ramones albums. I tried learning to play with my fingers first but I was born with tremors in my arms and hands so it didn’t work, but I overcame that and began down picking like Deedee Ramone. It’s been 3.5 years since I bought my old bass and I have gotten to an amateur status, I will never say I’m a good bass player or even an expert if se people consider me that I’ll always say I’m amateur and I love to play. Cockiness and ego can ruin your true personality
Wow, great video. Who knew, I already play like Lemmy, not much distortion if any, but the technique and simple style right down to E and D chords (mainly Blues Rock, AC-DC kinda stuff), with enough distortion it sound a bit like Motorhead. I am a Huge Motorhead fan, and Lemmy and Cliff Williams influenced me the most growing up in the late 70s inti the 80s, im old now but still play my bass like its pissing me off, I think Lem would enjoy it.

This is great. Thanks you for this Lemmy lesson and tribute. Well done. I am glad that I discovered you by your Detroit Rock City Bass cover. Good stuff.
Steve Clark (Def Leppard) once said in an interview to aspiring guitarists "Listen to a lot of different players but don't try to be them. Be yourself and develop your own style." I took those words to heart before I picked up my first guitar. There was only ONE Lemmy. Honor him with tribute but don't try to be him. That will only hurt yourself and people won't think you have anything original to say. I like what you're saying here Paul. Wise man, brother. Wise man. Rock on.
Thanks Paul, excellent video on Lemmy's technique.

Don´t forget him.
Lemmy is a true anomaly. The only way we would ever hear his sound again is if he were still alive to make his sound. No amount of money spent on an identical rig, or time spent practicing the style, will ever result in that sound being produced ever again. But that's what makes him one of the greats; most great bass players can be imitated, but to imitate Lemmy is always to fail

Rest of the band was the same, all the sound gear was the same but there was a huge difference in the sheer drive Lemmy’s playing gave them. Dude, you should do a Sound Like Trevor Dunn of Mr. Bungle. Not a household name but such an underappreciated god-tier bassist. The second coming of Jaco, and I’m not kidding. He’s got the hat trick, too; he plays staccato, pick, AND slap.
I really like this video and especially tip number 9, true to the point. But I cannot thumbs this up coz of not doing the high note on intro of Ace of Spades aaaargh! Why didn't you do it?
Awesome Dont forget to tune youre bass to Eb and a whisky helps to stay safe rock on forever
dont forget to throw in some chromatic fills
Listen to Monte Meteoro's Luna Viva (the 3 minute version), that bass is Lemmy of the 2020's
I have a tip- use an SD-1 pedal by boss
Here's they pointer, you just need a bridge pickup, and a speaker that can handle harsh overdrive, all the Marshalls used Celestion speakers
Please do one whit D. D. Verni from overkill his picking and tone give the clang to metal
Fun fact about tip #V Slash also uses a Dunlop 1.14!

'reek N baker'. thank you for that.
Okay that's the bass. Now good luck with the vocals!!! :) Because, how to sound like Lemmy = It is 10% in the bass and 90% in the vocals. Getting the bass part right is much easier.

Motörhead songs were in eb/d# tuning, so all keys you've mentioned should be half step lower :)
9 tips to sound and play like Lemmy tips 1 - 9: be Lemmy. because that is the only way.
What about an episode on Joe Lally of Fugazi?
4:10 actually, in the early days, he used Roto sound 66’s before swapping to Dean Markley blue steel strings in the late 80’s until him and dunlop signed a contract to basically copy Dean Markley’s and sell them as their own. Which he promoted on his bass. Sorry for the history lesson. lol

I think 9 applies to theory in general... Basically get busy doing stuff, then study. You'll find most things have labels and structures and your studies (standard theory included) allow you ti enhance what you are already doing. Otherwise, you cant make heads or tails of it and end up treating it like gospel.
Tip # IX is the best: “Lemmy didn’t give a fuck about anything & he sound just like him”! 🤣 that’s fuckin awesome!
