I'm a bassist from the Beatles, Stones, Who, Cream era. So to say that Metallica is a bit out of my genre would be correct. I did like Black Sabbath and some other early "roots of heavy metal" bands, but my musical roots are of my generation. However, as a bass player, I absolutely love the instrument and admire fine players of any genre. Cliff Burton was a monster bassist. In the tradition of a Geezer Butler. He had a major influence on his generation of bassists/fans. It's horrible how the man died. A real tragedy and heartbreaking situation to say the least. However, in his all too brief lifetime, he inspired so many young people to pick up a bass, and his music as well as his influence will live on forever in the music he made. So R.I.P. Cliff, you left behind quite a legacy.

I think Cliff was murdered and the buss story was the cover up. Way to many details to sell the story. I don't think Cliff wanted to take the band in the direction that James was trying to take the band and to kick Cliff out would of been band suicide. Another note Metallica is the Beatles of a different generation.

i’ve been a big fan since i heard my brother play the kill them all album he got the album after seeing them on the tour for that album and he saw them at a small venue in chicago and i think they used the video footage of the concert on the cliff them all documentary so i’ve been a fan from the first album and i can say that i love every song on the first 3 albums and i do still love a lot off and justice for all but when cliff died so did that special thing that metallica songs had that made them so interesting and you can listen to them over and over again and you still love hearing them like it’s the first time you heard it i don’t think they have the ability to write a song that can compare and be as amazing as anything from master of puppets or ride the lightning they could do something like kill them all if they let dave mustain write with them but they can never create that greatness that they captured in the first 3 album and that’s why they have to do a 3 hour concert and only play a one or 2 songs from the albums after the first four but they always have to play majority of the concert playing everything from masters and ride the lightning justice kill them all every time cause that’s what fans want and need to hear

Contrary (or complementary) opinion, Burtons lines are generally muddy and messy, lacking articulation and difficult to understand under tense guitars. This creates a rumbling bass cloud in background effect. That may be stylistic choice but sounds like hiding inconsistencies in playing.

Yeah I'm sorry to the newsted fans but ajfa is boring because something is wrong with it. 1. No bass 2. The punk elements are gone 3. No Cliff Burton.

I may get roasted for this but I was never a fan of his tone when heard isolated. Maybe because of how low in the mix he was, I couldn’t hear what it did for the songs. Obviously, I love his playing and contributions to music in general, however, I often wonder how his tone may (or may not) have evolved as technology in music had evolved.

It's interesting to realize how many tricks I stole from Cliff subconsciously over the years. Except I'm a terrible player and use a pick.

Picks definitely have their place in tone creation but a good bassist should know every style of playing just to know what tone you want for the mix and to cut through the rest of the instruments.
