    Well, Robert completes the trifecta and is the longest, more technical player. He is no Cliff and lacks the Jason charisma, but he is a solid player and just want Metallica needed to come out of their funk and not go away with their fortunes and fame. Now he is the tenured one and is actively contributing to the band. He is riding the glory days, but he is creating some sanity and consistency that play well with all other three and their alter egos.

    @@eamc2020 Robert while being more technical doesn’t equate to being the best for Metallica, sure he’s gone with the Metallica machine for a long time now, and throughout his tenure some of the best shows in Metallica’s career have been with Rob. But I will say this, any good show with Rob, imagine Jason there packing just that bigger punch, Charisma, edge, crowd control, fun solos, BACKING VOCALS, Jason’s vocal versions of songs and much more. It’s not to hate on Rob and sure, Jason physically can’t play like he could. But when it comes to the THE Metallica bass players, think about it, Jason should be second. ITS JASON!

    While the album output was higher, officially he contribute far less than Cliff or Rob. Officially (and you can argue about the songwriting credits on Death Magnetic) Rob contributed more to the actual song writing on his first 2 outings than Jason did on his 4 albums. Even if you wanna argue that the song writing credits on Death Magnetic are a bit dodgy, Rob still contributed (and these are confirmed) riffs to The Day That Never Comes, All Nightmare Long, Suicide and Redemption, and ManUnKind, which surpasses Jason's overall songwriting credits. Similarly, the Cliff era outputted albums with greater efficiency, releasing 3 albums in the span of 4 years vs the Jason era which took 8 years to do the same. I love Jason and there's reasons why A. his riff input was so low and B. why they weren't as efficient as early Metallica, but he can't be seen as the only reason that the groups studio album output was highest when he was the bassist

    @@B---tw3kh You can't knock Jason for lack of songwriting when James and Lars actively prevented Jason from the songwriting process. It's also arguable that if they included Jason in songwriting, he wouldn't have left. It's the prime Jason wanted to pursue outside ventures; they didn't let him in the creative process, so he tried to look elsewhere to express himself musically. When they stopped him from doing that, he had the choice of either continuing to be an outsider and essentially a studio musician in the band or quit. Given that he made enough money to live comfortably by that point, the decision was likely pretty easy to choose freedom to express himself.

  • @B---tw3kh

    @B---tw3kh

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@stlchucko I'm not saying that Jason not being involved in the songwriting is his own fault, but you can't say that the bands high album output while he was the bassist is solely because of Jason. When the original statement is implying that "Jason's time with the band had higher output and Rob doesn't bring much", I think it praises Jason and diminishes Rob in an unfair way. Jason only contributed 3 songs at a time when the group released almost 50 original songs. Rob is clearly more skilled than Jason and maybe even Cliff, but Jason saved the band after the death of Cliff, help the band realise and emphasis some of there most experimental output, the songs he did write for the band were unique and some of the most interesting on their respective albums, he was a fabulous vocalist (backing and lead) and a rock solid bassist, and his stage presence was exceptional. I just think that's where his praise should lie

    Cliff being #1 is a nobrainer. But the 2nd place remains debatable. To me Rob definitely has some very nasty technical skills, but more in the funkier realms of music. Jason on the other hand is a metal WarBEAST. His presence on stage, his vocals his relentless attacks with that pick. It’s beyond insane. And then how he contributed to the songs. For me it’s 2nd for Jason!

    Jason should be #2. He got the band through the roughest time. He was there for the biggest growth of the band. He stuck it out for years through endless hazing and being treated like an outsider. He wasn't allowed creative influence or involved in the writing process. They treated him like a studio musician they took on tour and their personal punching bag. If it wasn't for Jason sticking around for so long, it's arguable that Metallica wouldn't have survived. Rob stepped into the band while they were already massively successful, world renowned, and most importantly, the other members had already gone to therapy so they didn't treat him like absolute dog shit. If they treated Rob 1/10th the way they treated Jason, Rob would have quit years ago.

    I highly agree. I’ve been saying the same thing on countless other videos. Cliff had a wide musical pallet. He actually admitted in an interview that he had to get accustomed to a faster paced thrashing style when he joined Metallica. Cliff also liked country music and country styled rock, so I can totally see the black album and Load/ReLoad albums still happening if Cliff were still alive. They might’ve actually sounded more melodic but Metallica most likely would have still made the same evolutionary change.

    I know we all have our opinions, I certainly do. But how, with any clean conscience could you rank Jason 3? Easily he and Cliff are arguably THE bassists that helped make Metallica what they are today. Cliff for his musical approach to songwriting and how he played lead bass, so to speak. And Jason for stepping in when the band was at a very dark but pivotal time in their career. He IS the quintessential bassist after Cliff for this band. And this is by no means disrespect to Rob, as Rob is a great bassist in his own right and he does help the band immensely. I share with him a love of some of the same musical inspirations (Jaco Pastorius in particular). Unfortunately for Rob, he wasn't a part of Metallica's pivotal times: the 80s and the 90s. Again, with respect to Rob and Ron but it should've been 1. Cliff, 2. Jason, 3. Rob, 4. Ron, 5. Bob...

    Jason based on his energy and backing vocals alone puts him at #1 for me.

  • @Manimal1985

    I'd put Jason at one, as would so many other fans. He was a perfect fit, a real metal head, had by leaps and bounds the best Bass tone Gave his all on every single performance, could sing and his skills were underrated and more than adequate for that style of metal.

    Well, Bob played gigs with them, so he's a member. However, I respectfully disagree with the top 3. (Not a hate comment, I'm just bringing out my opinion here) I'd rather put Jason on 2nd because of his dedication to the studio work as well as for the showmanship on the live gigs, and then Robert on 3rd; no hate, I love him just as much as I love Cliff and Jason, he just didn't leave a notable mark on the studio stuff like they did.

    I mean absolutely no disrespect towards Rob, I love Suicidal and his work with Infectious Grooves is insane (check out Violent & Funky for a fun sample if you aren't familiar with them), but Death Magnetic and Hardwired will never be the same caliber of work as Justice, and anyone who has seen them live during that period is well aware of what Jason is capable of. The black album was decent too.

    In my opinion, Cliff's contribution to Metallica was more in his knowledge of music than his actual bass playing. Not taking anything away from his bass playing, which was great, but he taught Metallica how to write amazing music, and that contribution lived on in the band after he died.

    TBH the first 3 metalica album are a body of work that we will never see again, IMO Jason is number 2 for what he had to walk into and the disrespect given to him on AJFA and the way he was treated by the other members I am sure Rob would have been fine but we will never know because he didn't have to.
