RIP legend. Anytime I have an inkling of a question on form or potential tips to improve a lift for myself, I still come back to this man's channel. Still run his programs. You touched a lot of lives Mr. Meadows. Going all the way back to 2011 on the ship on deployment waiting 10 minutes for T-nation articles to load getting ideas from him. May God Bless your Wife and Son's

Rest in Peace John, all the gains I've made in the gym have been because I started watching all of your videos that inspired me to start hitting the gym seriously. I started at 247 lbs at my heaviest and now I've dropped down to 205 whilst gaining muscle as I do it. God bless you and keep you john, I'm hitting my push day today and will be implementing dips in my routine.

IMO ring dips are one of the best exercises for shoulder health, simply because they train you to really control the position of your shoulder blades & letting you build all those little stabilizers. After I did ring dips all summer long last year, I came back to bench pressing and immediately broke through my pre-Covid plateau - no shoulder issues.

  • @AwestaKhalid

My gym didn’t have rings (like most gyms) so I got myself a pair. A few weeks into it, someone asked if they could try it. This was a guy who I’d seen do regular dips with 2 plates if not close to that and he couldn’t even stabilize himself long enough to even try a rep. I’m not knocking the guy but the whole scenario illustrates how it can be so easy to push a lot of weight in the gym do so in a way where the strength isn’t too “functional”

Absolutely right on the old style dip stand with a V taper wide in the front and narrowed going back so you could find just the right width. Mostly see combo leg lift/dip stands with only one width, which is too wide for me. I did weighted dips (before my shoulders got so messed up) and would hunch over for chest, crossing my ankles or more upright for triceps. Oh if only I was just starting out now watching your videos and techniques.

Great to see a shout out for Gironda !! That guy was the template for social media trainers - imagine how many subscribers he would have had if KZread was around in the 60’s/70’s ?😎 He had some great insight in to mind muscle connection and kinesiology. On that point, by dropping your head forward in dips, you relax the levator scapulae and prevent the traps from engaging strongly on the negative of the dip, this frees the shoulder joints up a little, and also means you get harder engagement of the pecs in their eccentric phase. You are way more likely to trap a nerve or hurt your neck by looking forward or upward in a dip, than by tucking your chin 💪🏻👍

This is the gironda dip. Its a golden era exercise that arnie used to build his chest and develop that pec line. If you guys have the range of motion, go all the way down and get a deep stretch at the bottom. You want your face level with the bar and your elbows pointed up high. If you have banged up shoulders then john’s depth works fine too

I first saw the thumb nail and thought , hmmm, looks similar to a Gironda dip. Then John names drop him at 2:10 - that's' why The Mountain Dog/this channel is the real deal. Any one who gives praise and reference to the iron gods before us gets my upmost respect. The nailed the blueprint aeons before we sullied them. These dips are the only version I do. Close to a year now. Chin tucked - feet pointed out. This can be done really well with a proper dip station with bars in V or U -shaped (although the U shaped are nearly impossible to find in person). Proceed with caution if trying to mimic the EXACT dip as Vince demonstrated on his people (Larry Scott for one..) as the flared out elbows will be hell on the wrist/shoulders. Good point mentioned here by John. One deff needs to play around with the grip to fit ones personal structure.

So of course I have several bulging discs in my spine from my neck all the way to my lumbar so just looking downward puts a ton of strain on my spine. However ive been trying to do my dips like this and they are certainly harder this way. I can do weighted dips primarily triceps focused with as much as 90lbs around my waist. I do chest dips with legs out front and 3 sets with just body weight is difficult. Usually ill warm up on the dip cable machine where you can sit and really focus on the squeeze. Then ill do my working sets on the bars. Been really trying to work on the lower chest development.
