How To Mix & Apply Iron Sulphate To Your Lawn

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Ever wanted to know the best way of getting iron down on your lawn? In this video I am sharing EXACTLY what I do, and how I do it.
Iron is beneficial to a lawn by hardening the turf and controlling moss in a lawn. It also provides a Green up and some nutrients that help the grass plant out over Winter.
You can see I use an Iron sulphate powder called “Ferromel”, although it is now getting harder to find iron products due to global shortages.
If you choose any other iron powder you must decide the correct amount to be applying.
I have only ever used commercial iron products and in all honesty I have used the exact same ratio per tank mix each time.
Using a knapsack sprayer I mix around 1KG iron powder with 20 litres water. This usually will cover around 400 square metres sing a Green nozzle.

  • @LawnRight

    Hi and thanks! Iron is mainly Ued over winter. Typically anywhere from November to End of March. Once every 2 months is fine but you can go monthly. I wouldnt seed and apply iron as itll affect the seeds. Weedspray as needed but typically 2 or 3 times during growing season. Read the rules for the chemical you are applying as some can only be applied once a year

    The only need for iron sulphate is to kill moss if you haven't got a scarifier or the moss keeps coming back. I apply it very tentatively with a miracle gro feeder on a hosepipe where it's need. A little at a time until I can see the moss going black the next day. Very little is needed and it is very acidic so the less used the better. Actual miracle gro feed is all you need to revitalise the lawn and the feeder is the easiest way to apply it. One sachet per 100 square metres until it's all gone which takes about fifteen minutes.

    Great video Iv been using Pro-Kleen Iron Sulphate powder and it says 40g per 20l of water Is there any difference between this and the iron you are using as compared to your 1000g per 20l this seems very very weak ?

    Hi every powder will have their own application rates. I do agree though that does seem weak compared to mine but try it at that and see if the moss goes brown after a day. It does seem to be right though.. I've checked on the pro kleen website and it is what you say so I'd go with that

    @@amandapetermendez1725 the water is just the carrier, go with 2g of iron sulphate per square meter of lawn. 2g x400 square meter is 800g. Spray your lawn with just water first to work out how much water it takes to spray your lawn once. Then refill your tank to that amount and add 800g of iron.

    would it not be easier to mix the solution in the plastic water drum then pour into the sprayer once properly mixed. it means you can put the lid on and give it a good shake without spilling and would reduce the risk of unmixed iron clogging the sprayer.

  • @LawnRight

    @LawnRight

    Hi.. maybe.. I've never done that. Suppose old habits die hard. Iron does stain so I'd prob not want it staining the drums as I also use the drums for water for other treatments such as weedkiller.

  • @LawnRight

    Hi it's already calibrated to my own walking speed. Setting sprayers up to deliver the right amount requires knapsack calibration which is already set up for me. Thankfully iron sulphate is a little forgiving if you over apply. So the 1 to 1.2 litres of iron in 20 litres knapsack delivers at the right rate through the right nozzle for me if that makes sense. Everyone elses walking speed and spray width would affect their own particular ratios however with iron its a little more forgiving

  • @cseanny

    @cseanny

    I thought the same too. You need to know the area of lawn to determine how much iron to use. The amount of water is almost insignificant, enough to give the lawn a decent drench. Off the top of my head, I tend to use 6/7g of 19% iron for every sqm, for a 100sqm lawn I would use 10l of water with 600/700g when killing moss. I’d also cut the grass first. On very heavy infestations I would also scarify before spraying iron. Another tip is to use an absorbent door mat on hard surfaces to wipe your boots. We all have different methods I suppose, someone will be along to say my methods are wrong too!
