Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today in the Smugglers Room we are finding our way by showing you how to make a Sith Wayfinder with a Display Case! The Wayfinder was seen in Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker, and it has been one of those props we have wanted to make since seeing the film. So today . . . let's make one!

For the behind the greeblies glue spot, my thought would be to paint the back of the acrylic the background color first, let dry, THEN apply the glue to the acrylic piece and insert.

Would a double stick tape applied to the greeblie, cut to fit the silhouette and pressed into place work? It would give a consistent color across the greeblie.

@@TheSmugglersRoom That's why I was suggesting you paint the back of the acrylic and let it dry first... Basically I see this as , 1) you paint your object the color you want, 2) you paint the back of the clear acrylic the same color and let dry. 3) Then you glue the painted side of the acrylic to the object. The paint on the back of the acrylic should completely block any visual cues of glue. I am in no way saying this will 100% work, just a thought that I had while eating my lunch at work and watching the vid

I smile every time you use that closed cell foam for diffusers. Modellers use tiny amounts of white PVA glue on clear parts to prevent frosting, maybe a drop on each end would work for those orange acrylic pieces. It's not like you need massive amounts of holding power.

To avoid the visible glue look, use 3M 467 tape applie to the back of your acrylic before you laser then it is just peel and stick! The 3M is strong, no worries.

16:22 My wild guess: Use clear double sided tape. Tape the double sided tape on the back side of the acrylic, then laser cut it, that way the tape is a perfect match for the shape of the acrylic and it's transparent.

  • @petecastiglione9710

For the amber acrylic, instead of glue you could try using the same tape used for phone screen installs. Cut it to cover the entire back and only the back. Then there would be no variation.

I might suggest trying a transparent double sided adhesive film used in scrapbooking. It will pretty much be automatically acid-free (non-yellowing), I'm pretty certain there are permanent versions, and you could probably apply it to the back side of your acrylic before laser cutting. ;-)

Great job as always! Love the build! I'll definitely have to give that brushed aluminum trick a try! As for the orange acrylic, one possibility could be as simple as laying down a strip of clear double-sided tape on one side and cutting it to the shape of the piece. That way it'll be significantly less likely to show through and should still hold just fine. The other thought I had was spray adhesive which might give a more even coat.

Love all the little details, lights and the plaque on top of the display. As for the orange pieces two things come to mind. Double sided adhesive so you don't see glue spread or make the measurements a tad smaller so the orange pieces just snap into pleace with a little pressure. Great work and thank you!

Definitely will keep the brushed alu' in mind, looks very nice and is dirt-cheap to make too. As for the orange parts, only idea i got would be to glue them before assembling the sides with simple clear tape on the back. Basically just slot them in, with the part "face down", put a strip of tape behind each line and i think the surface tension around the clear part combined to the packing tape *should* hold it in place. Its a guess, but its worth testing out i think. Another, slightly more annoying way, would be to make each of the strips on a single large plate with a thin lip, and make an inner "step" in the part you're gluing them to so the glue is actually around the clear plate and not directly under each strip. Takes more planning and using a router tool i guess, but at least its clean.

Love this display! I printed a Wayfinder from files I found on Etsy, then slathered it with plaster for the stone effect. Lit with a simple tea candle light that I swapped in a red and green led. I'd love to hardwire it in the future so it can stay on without the hassle of batteries.

Another incredible build my friend. Love the use of the clay foam for the stone effect. I like your approach for the brushed aluminium look. I had come up with a different technique. I hold down the acrylic on a flat surface. Then, using double sided tape, wrap some 80 grit sandpaper to an ABS tube. Then drag the sandpaper over the acrylic, in a straight line. Repeating til I get the results I like. Then wipe/wash the surface and paint. It’s a bit scary taking a coarse sandpaper to laser cut acrylic the first time. I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to get the inset pieces in the “Death Star wall lights”, without the glue showing. I have a number of inlay parts to do for a current project. I’m going to test using a clear resin, applied from behind. Will let you know how it works (once I get up the courage). I fortunately have some test parts first. As for press fit, that’s kind of hard with laser cut parts. The laser cuts at a slight bevel and a kerf. I think the most likely way to accomplish this would be to cut the inset parts in exactly the same place as the openings are cut. Then they should be close to the same bevel (the angle varies depending on the position on the table. As for the kerf, try an offset of about 0.001”. It’s going to take experimenting to determine the kerf on your laser. I believe the kerf is also going to vary (by ten thousandths) across the bed. I’ve also found that you get very slight differences between acrylic sheets (colors and batches). Age, storage and climate cause subtle variances in your cuts (I’ve been doing a lot of laser cutting of late). I’m thinking I might need to add this way finder to my growing list of projects. I love it. Also, thanks for the shout out. Long live the Guild.

If you have to use CA glue on clear parts, coat (2x) both sides with Future floor wax. The wax will protect the clear plastic and prevent the glue's fumes from clouding the plastic.
