How To Make a Beauty Dish

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

www.ImageGuy.com - Learn how to make your own beauty dish. All you need is a plastic bowl, foam board, zip-ties (zap straps) and aluminum tape.
A few years ago I posted "Make Your Own Beauty Dish" on my blog - www.imageguy.com/make-your-own.... This is still the most popular post on the website. The problem... There was no video. Now there is.

The photo lighting industry must LOVE you. Nothing like simplicity to get a job done or solve a problem. Did you purposely decide not to make the connection to the outside of the bowl permanent? I thought of cutting another set of releasable zip-ties heads off and use them to hold the ties that go through the bowl on.

Hey, Loved the tutorial. I changed it a little bit and uses a plastic cap for an out door electrical box (round) , 4 3'' bolts, and a mirror. It came out beautiful. It was only $12! I'll post a video and a link some time soon. Thanks alot for the inspiration!

I think next time I would make the inner disk bigger and position the holes in further. The foam board is not strong enough to sustain usage. I can see it will not last ling. So, I may just change the inner disc to make it more sturdy. I did mine for under $10. I found the bowl at Goodwill for $2, which was the hardest item to find. Aluminum tape I got at Home Depot. thx for posting instructions.

@jeffgobens The cuts in the bowl are very tight on the zip ties. There is enough friction between the cuts in the bowl and the zip ties to hold everything in place.

Hi Mike, Got a couple of questions, First off and this might sound stupid, But where did you get the plastic bowls for the beauty dish? Second, On the little disk Which way does the Aluminum foil part face in towards the flash unit to where the two look at each other or outwards? Thanks Tim

Nice project. But my main take-away from this was I now have decided how I am going to make videos from now on. I'm going to take pictures and hold them in front of the video camera. There's something meta about that and it really makes my brain itch.

Great instructional video! Really made it simple to make. But I'm wondering how you got the zip-ties to stay in the bowl, since I can see you didn't bring them back around to make a full circuit on itself, closing the zip tie off - you left it sticking out the edge. How does it stay there? Guess I could just use the end of another zip-tie lol

@ImageGuyMikey Ah of course. And when I was trying to cut slots for the ziptie, the plastic was too hard for me. Then I decided to heat up a paperclip with a candle and stick it through, highly recommended as an alternate method of making a hole in plastic. Not for eco-conscious do-gooders :)

Drill holes in the corners before cutting the bowl. That will prevent the cuts from splitting past your tracing.

You could cut the locking ends off of 4 other zip ties, and use them to lock the zip ties through the bowl in place.

what kinds of tests have you done to make sure you're getting an even illumination? My guess is if you photograph a white wall you'll see a dark spot in the center which is typical of so called beauty dishes made for on camera flashes. I hope I'm wrong though.

Dude, great video its pretty funny though that you printed out photos of the step then shot them while giving the instructions. It would have been more effective to just drop the stills into the timeline while voicing over them. HOWEVER, this looks cools as hell, a nice and unique way to get the point across, Bravo!

Nice that the folks who run the "home" let you have the freedom to make these videos! :o) Funny! I've been making homemade softboxes and beauty dishes for years ... a good way to test out gear before buying pro-level kit... or in some cases you realize your homemade gear is better than what you'd buy. Anyone who builds their gear is heads and shoulders above other shooters!
