www.ImageGuy.com - Learn how to make your own beauty dish. All you need is a plastic bowl, foam board, zip-ties (zap straps) and aluminum tape.
A few years ago I posted "Make Your Own Beauty Dish" on my blog - www.imageguy.com/make-your-own.... This is still the most popular post on the website. The problem... There was no video. Now there is.

lololol....i gave up n my ex gf bought me frm bnh
The photo lighting industry must LOVE you. Nothing like simplicity to get a job done or solve a problem. Did you purposely decide not to make the connection to the outside of the bowl permanent? I thought of cutting another set of releasable zip-ties heads off and use them to hold the ties that go through the bowl on.
Hey, Loved the tutorial. I changed it a little bit and uses a plastic cap for an out door electrical box (round) , 4 3'' bolts, and a mirror. It came out beautiful. It was only $12! I'll post a video and a link some time soon. Thanks alot for the inspiration!
Thank you so much. I made one today and it works well. In fact, I love it more than a store-bought one!
great tip also love the low fi presentation w/ handheld photos ;D
Spot on Video, Simple and well illustrated. Thank you
Crisp, precise and to the point. Lovely.
Loved the ending... and off-course the tip !!! Thanks
:D I've just subscribed because of the end of the video! you are great :) keep filming!
I made one and it work like a charm!
Brilliant idea many thanks will try this out
Thanks for this man! Sure beats a $100 dish that I have to order for ALLLLL the way from Kenya.
Great tutorial mike! nice videos! :)
Great build and nice video. Like others, would like to see samples of some pictures taken using it though.
Great vid! Thanks for posting!!!
I think next time I would make the inner disk bigger and position the holes in further. The foam board is not strong enough to sustain usage. I can see it will not last ling. So, I may just change the inner disc to make it more sturdy. I did mine for under $10. I found the bowl at Goodwill for $2, which was the hardest item to find. Aluminum tape I got at Home Depot. thx for posting instructions.
Thank's Mike...amazing job there.Thank's a lot.Cheers.
You guys show us how simple things can be. Thanks a lot
Very informative! Thank you for posting this.
found it today, building today, using today! thank you! works well!
Fun & it works ! Thanks for posting
great tutorial, just made one and its great.
You have good descriptive skills; thanks for the video.
@jeffgobens The cuts in the bowl are very tight on the zip ties. There is enough friction between the cuts in the bowl and the zip ties to hold everything in place.
Great video, I'll be giving this a shot!
Here's my version! Thanks for the inspiration!
Muchas Gracias por su gran ayuda. Saludos desde Mèxico Dios lo Bendiga.
Great video. Thanks!
Awesome, do you have some shots using the Beauty Dish you made?
Nice. great idea, thanks for sharing it...
nice video... you've got me waiting upto the last sec. of the video... will try this one... thanks
@aleksandersandstrom can you send me the link please of ikea catalogue?? thanks
Finally a tutorial thats easy
I like those who make their own equipment rather than go and buy them ready from stores. I made most of my photography equipment my self. Thank you
Great idea, thanks
Pretty neat build man. Would love to see the result shots ;)
Cool project, do you have any final photos to view where you used this? Thanks!
good video man !!
C'est excellent...bravo !
Wow! That's awesome!
Great video. Thanks for the tip! :) I couldn't quite see in the video, though, whether the aluminium tape was facing in or outward.
Hi Mike, Got a couple of questions, First off and this might sound stupid, But where did you get the plastic bowls for the beauty dish? Second, On the little disk Which way does the Aluminum foil part face in towards the flash unit to where the two look at each other or outwards? Thanks Tim
you are amazingly funny and cool. Brilliant is your creation tho...wow, neat! I cant wait to teach that to my two homeschoolers..they love building stuff that actually works! Ill send a pic in too once we complete this project. Thanks for sharing! thats what makes the world go round! yay!
alright. that last part was indeed funny. :)
Great ending, great vid. Got any photos, showing the result? That's what I'd like to see as well. Thanks for the great info! G.
hahah you're funny. thanks for this tutorial, it looks really good once it's set up and all. just one quick question: will it stand steady on the flash just like that?
Nice project. But my main take-away from this was I now have decided how I am going to make videos from now on. I'm going to take pictures and hold them in front of the video camera. There's something meta about that and it really makes my brain itch.
One other benefit of this dish is that it's light enough to carry around in one hand with camera in the other hand
This vdo made me subscribe... thanks for sharing.
@lauderdaleflorida You're welcome... Thanks for watching.
Great instructional video! Really made it simple to make. But I'm wondering how you got the zip-ties to stay in the bowl, since I can see you didn't bring them back around to make a full circuit on itself, closing the zip tie off - you left it sticking out the edge. How does it stay there? Guess I could just use the end of another zip-tie lol
GREAT VIDEO thank you
Very nice, you should show some results, images you took using the beauty dish. I must make one of these! I've already made a cardboard softbox for macro, and a cardboard grid :) DIY gear is the best!
Thanks for sharing. Hate paying for this kind of stuff, so I'll make a couple of these:)

+Diana Luckysova Me too...So i made a softbox yesterday and I plan to make a beauty dish next days. That costs 5-9 euros while you need 50 euros for a beauty dish from e-Bay...
@ImageGuyMikey Ah of course. And when I was trying to cut slots for the ziptie, the plastic was too hard for me. Then I decided to heat up a paperclip with a candle and stick it through, highly recommended as an alternate method of making a hole in plastic. Not for eco-conscious do-gooders :)
Where did you purchase the White plastic bowl?
Awesome video, I didn't click anything because I wanted to see the end :D Now I am going to kill some bowl..
awesome....
well done !
Drill holes in the corners before cutting the bowl. That will prevent the cuts from splitting past your tracing.
Haha! Love the ending!
@ChristiaanL14 Yes I am!
You could cut the locking ends off of 4 other zip ties, and use them to lock the zip ties through the bowl in place.
do you have any results
what kinds of tests have you done to make sure you're getting an even illumination? My guess is if you photograph a white wall you'll see a dark spot in the center which is typical of so called beauty dishes made for on camera flashes. I hope I'm wrong though.
Oh man... THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!
Dude, great video its pretty funny though that you printed out photos of the step then shot them while giving the instructions. It would have been more effective to just drop the stills into the timeline while voicing over them. HOWEVER, this looks cools as hell, a nice and unique way to get the point across, Bravo!
The end was adorable and youre a grown man kml
aww i love this thank u.... n i like the humour part.. xoxo
Thanks NYC PHOTOG, I purposely didn't make the connection permanent so I could remove the centre disk and put in a diffuser. 1 bowl, 2 lights. Wait till you see the new beauty dish idea I have. You'l be able to use it for both photo and video. That will be posted soon on my new KZread channel - GuysWithCamerasTV
great!
Kudos....and I was ABOUT to "Click Something, Comon" :P
LOLOLOL!!!! Th end is the best part!!!
brilliant
very informative.
Great :) thanks for sharing :)
I have no need for a beauty dish, but i thought that sh~~ was well explained. Good video
I would not too fussed with the size of the holes in the dish. just cut the "knot" from another 4 zip ties and slide them over the tails if the support ties.. Nice vid btw
Nice that the folks who run the "home" let you have the freedom to make these videos! :o) Funny! I've been making homemade softboxes and beauty dishes for years ... a good way to test out gear before buying pro-level kit... or in some cases you realize your homemade gear is better than what you'd buy. Anyone who builds their gear is heads and shoulders above other shooters!
would have been nice to show some pics using the dish lighting
@00sven00sven00 that awkward moment when you don't spell awkward right lol =D
Canadians ROCK!.... btw, great diy! so much better than my hack attempt! time to re-do! :)
